Hook:
There is not one universe, but many. However, sometimes a universe...doesn't make it. The Dark Ritual gets finished, no one stops the mad scientist before his experiment creates a paradox, someone learns to make portals but not how to make them stable...a lot of worlds have been lost. Yours was. Maybe you were there to see the hammer fall, maybe you didn't know anything was wrong until the sky turned black and the stars went out.
But sometimes, there's a second chance. Sometimes, someone is there when you really need them. There was for you. Call them gods or angels or blind luck misinterpreted by a desperate mind, some force scooped you and your little slice of life out of the dark and dropped you off, possibly house(or carriage, or plane) and all, into a green field. This is a bit unexpected, but you're alive.

[sblock=scratch]well if it's scraps of different worlds and universes, I think it'd be cool to have like the occasional city or landmark that exemplifies that outside of wilderness. like a decrepit skyscraper spliced with a ruined castle
would be cool for the existing settlements to have pre-existing sort of diplomatic relations with each other
like some allied, some at war[/sblock]
[sblock=wal]harsh, vast wilderness with a few scattered, small settlements, but ultimately mostly untamed. also being initially neutral or hostile with many groups, with only a handful of actually altruistic ones
but yeah wild, crazy variety of landscapes would be cool[/sblock]
