"Subtle is more my style, too," Cass agrees. "Besides, if all else fails, maybe Tess here can have a red dot on some Diktat jarhead from a quarter-klick out."

He looks down at the rocky surface beneath them as they walk. "I'm hoping we got some natural cover on the way up. Otherwise their security cams will pick us up early if we approach directly."

Tess leaps from the craft as soon as it is safe, eager to be back on solid ground, if only for the few hours before their next takeoff. She does not trade any pleasantries like the others, her mind too focused on her escape to the planet surface, and their later escape to the stars.

She listens as the others make their plan, and considers their words. "That's the plan," Tess responds to Cass, patting her brand new rifle on her back. "If subtlety doesn't work out I can be sure to off as many as I can from afar. But hopefully we can get through this with as few rounds fired on both sides. The last thing we need is to be bleeding out while flying from the only safe port anywhere around."

Almost too soon, Creed is being shoved off the shuttle and has his feet back on solid ground. He sighs, and an immediate look of disappointment washes over his face. Can't focus on that, though. He thinks to himself, before looking back at the others. "I don't think our best bet is brute force either, especially with our... my hit record. We'd be sitting ducks in there and with our luck, we'd be stuck at that door until we freeze to death." He shrugs a bit and chews on his tongue as he finds himself lost in thought. "I think our best bet is one of our prettier faces tries to get us in there."

He must mean Tess, Cass thinks. Of course, the two new girls aren't too hard on the eyes either.

"Let's see what we're working with first," the ex-navy tech suggests, trudging along on the rocky surface.

The going is tough, as the surface varies a lot from loose gravel, to large patches of ice, to knee deep snow drifts, but you manage to make the kilometre long journey in about twenty minutes - your helmet displays showing another forty minutes of oxygen left.

The space port comes into view as you crest a small ridge about 100 metres from the landing pads. It immediately appears Bao's information on the layout of the space port was accurate. With the landing pads, fuel depot, generators and defense battery exactly where his plans said they would be. With not needing to normally worry about people approaching from the surface, there is also no fence or barrier around the landing pads.

Surveying the port from your vantage point you can make out the ships currently parked outside. The port is illuminated by lights around the landing pads and the other structures although visibility is still not great. Through the snow storm conditions you can make out a few figures around the port.

Closest to you, in the South East corner of the port, two small Diktat Fighters are parked together on one of the pads. A couple of pads over you can make out the sleek black hull of a military ship about 60m long.

"That's a Javelin Class patrol boat," Marko says, pointing to the ship, a hint of excitement in his voice. "One of the newer ships in the Idarete Navy."

Further away, on the other side of the port, things are a bit harder to make out in the current weather conditions, but you spot a Diktat shuttle parked by the fuel depot and another Idarete ship on the centre pad. This ship is a little bit larger than the patrol boat, presumably a Corvette or Heavy Frigate, however you can see a truck parked nearby and several figures in Vacc Suits working on part of the ship where, from this distance, it looks like part of the hull plating has been removed.

You also spot movement near the truck as two more figures walk past, both holding weapons. Following them, they slowly patrol around the centre of the port. As they near the hanger doors built in the side of the small cliff to the West, you see them stop to talk to another armed figure for a moment, before continuing their patrol.

"Patrol boat, nice," Cass replies, his eyebrows raising at the sight. "Not too big, not too small. That's the kind of tub we're after."

He slows down, noticing the patrol. "A few guards. About what we expected. Guess they weren't expecting anyone as psychotic as us to approach via surface shuttle."

Cass

From your experience you have a decent understanding of the basics of ship security systems.

Access and privileges are normally controlled by the ship's computer which would include the access to the exterior airlocks. With some work to expose the door's electronics you could probably trick it into opening via hacking.

However as ships are usually either in space or have a skeleton crew aboard when landed or berthed somewhere, they are not designed to be impenetrable. With your tool kit you estimate you could get to the door's mechanism and manipulate it into opening in a few minutes.

Once inside you could expect most basic ship systems to respond to you by default, as most ship's will be setup to accommodate occasional guests or passengers without having to manually update their permissions. However systems such as engines and the weapons would almost definitely be locked out to you. Accessing the ship's computer and hacking it would allow you to reset the ship's permissions.

As the ship has presumably been impounded by the Diktat since the invasion, depending on the progress of its refit, the old Idarete Navy permissions may still be in place in which case, Marko, Pia and Martine may have some permissions the rest of you don't.

"Well, Cass, d-do you think you can get its doors open if w-we watch your back?" He asks. "I d-don't think fighting all those people h-head-on is the answer, I think we try to sneak up and get in there before they notice us." He looks at the others. "I-I-I... I think, once we get in there, I'm good enough to pilot us out of here."

"Newer is better. That means we'll run into fewer problems if we get her airborne, yeah?" Hikaru says, smirking as he detects the excitement in Marko's tone. "You guys know anything that could make it easier for us to get onboard?" the pop star asks his three recruits, hoping their naval knowledge might come in handy once again.

"Newer, and - more importantly - faster," Tess adds, as the group looks to the patrol boat. "Even if they scrounge up some men to take a ship after us, we should likely be able to outrun them. At least, if Creed here is as good with a ship as he is with a car."

As the group speaks about what to do, she sets her guns down and grabs her new rifle off her back. She reaches into her backpack and grabs a single bullet to load into the beastly weapon, before motioning for one of their new companions to step over. "Mind carrying this for me?" she asks, handing the rifle to whichever of the three steps forward first. "In case we need it, I want that ready to go."

Picking her pistols back up, and returning to her feet, she address her original group - my crewmates, I guess. "We should see how long that patrol takes, then see if Cass has enough time to sneak us in without any conflict. If not, we've always got other options," she continues, glancing to her rifle with a smirk.

"It's not a ship we should be worried about coming after us," Cass says. He points ahead at the defense battery. "It's that. Soon as we lift this tub, they'll point and blast the shit out of us."

He sighs. "Problem for a future us to worry about. Yeah, I think I can crack the airlock, get us in. Not sure which side of these tubs its on. Hope it's the near side... or both. Maybe once that patrol wraps back toward the hangars we can move in and get to work."

The ex-navyman turns to the others, namely Tess and Creed. "Look, if we fuck this up, the only way out of this is through a firefight. You got me covered? I'm gonna be knee deep in getting the door open."

Tess glances to the defensive battery as Cass brings it to their attention, then back over to the ship. Noticing the generators off to the side of the building, she says, "if those power this whole station, maybe we can disable them and put their anti-aircraft guns out of commission." Turning to the ex-navy accompanying them, she asks, "is that how this all works? Or does the battery have a separate power source?"

At Cass' worries about his own safety, she frowns and turns back to the man. Does he really not trust that I'd protect him? After all of the shit we've gone through the past couple days? Patting the pistols at her hips, she says, "I am not one to let my friends die if I can help it." After a beat, she sighs and adds, "besides, as much as it pains me to admit it, I'd bet I've shot more people than any of the soldiers they have occupying this place. If they're green they might hesitate."

"We didn't serve on one, but I know where the entrances are," Marko says, replying to both Hikaru and Cass. "There's an airlock on either side on the mid decks, so there should be ladders extended while it's landed. The bottom deck should have a cargo ramp. I think the access pad for the ramp controls is on one of the landing legs."

"I'll take it," Martine says to Tess with a smile, stepping forward and taking the rifle from her and slinging it over her shoulder.

The three of them pause as Tess asks about the defence battery's power source. Marko offers up a shrug - although the effectiveness of the gesture is hampered somewhat by his bulky Vacc Suit.

"I'd say probably," Pia says. "It's not really our department but those guns would need a pretty big source of power and I don't see anything else," she says, looking out across the space port from your vantage point on the ridge.

Creed looked up and down the strip of what they could see, a look of clear and obvious fear across his face. "This is our only way off this rock. I want to get out of here. The only way I can get out of here is by making sure you stay alive." He'd gulp and look back at Cass, forcing himself past words that are clearly trying to stay caught in his throat. "I-I-If y-you die here," He takes a deep, unsteady breath, "I'm d-dying too, and I'm n-not letting that happen." He said nodding.

"I'm a friend, then?" Cass says, finding a smile on his face when both Tess and Creed vow to protect him. "Alright. I can work with that."

"I say we try for the airlock. If that's a bust, we'll lower the cargo ramp — but that's gonna take some time. We'll have these Diktat jarheads on us before we can get in, and probably more of the fuckers showing up in minutes."

He pauses, eyeing the battery and now the generators. "I think if we crack the ship's systems and actually get it running, we can use the jet thrusters to spin on the deck, line up a shot on the generators, and frag it. I doubt the battery can aim this low or this close. After that, we're free flying."

"If you can get us in quick enough, they won't even have enough time to react before we're outta there," Hikaru says, a small, hopeful smile spreading across his face. If only we'll be that lucky. But we've got surprise on our side. He sighs, feeling a nervous pit in his stomach as it once again hits what they're about to do. He takes a deep breath, eyes glancing across his suit's overlay.

"Let's do this. We can't sit around all day anyways. Not with this air supply."

"Not all day, but surely we can wait long enough to get a sense of the patrol's speed," Tess responds, rolling her eyes through her mask at the haste of Hikaru and Creed. "We should wait a moment and time our approach so we have the most wiggle room in case we are spotted. The last thing we want is to be getting shot at as soon as we approach, because we were too hasty."

Hikaru lets out a hefty sigh. "Yeah, yeah. You're right. Just so... ready to be off this place. But better to do it alive, I guess," Hikaru says, trying to suppress his nerves before they take full control. And I thought performing in Strocho's biggest arena was nerve-racking. He stares across the frigid expanse towards the landing, hoping they find an opening in the patrol.

Cass peeks over his shoulder at Hikaru, studying him for a moment. "You, uh, sure you don't want to just carry one of my guns here? I know it's not your style, but... neither is taking a laser shot to the skull. You're probably a shit aim, but covering or suppressive fire is just as important as actually hitting your target."

With the little natural light that gets through to the surface and the bright lights illuminating the space port, combined with the snow storm conditions, you figure you would probably be very hard to spot in your current position but, none the less, you keep low on the ridgeline as you continue to surveil the base below.

A couple of minutes later, the patrolling soldiers pass the defense battery at the far East of the port and begin their walk back towards the hanger doors. Checking the time you can see about five minutes have passed since they stopped and spoke with the other guard by the hangers, giving them a round trip of about 10 minutes.

Hikaru gulps at the offer, glancing at the guns his companions stocked up with. "I, uh... I'm not sure... Not sure I could even pull the trigger if I needed to," he says, nervously biting his lip. "It's a little different from video games when you know it's real." Not that I had much time for video games. Thank god for autoaim.

His eyes move between the patrol and his suit's HUD, noticing the oxygen capacity getting lower and lower. "So 35 left... What's the plan?" Fuck, I'm way out of my element.

He says and takes a big gulp of air to try and steady his nerves, clearly just dropping a dead joke in the snow before he pushes himself up. "I guess I'll finally get to use my new gun." He says with a weak smile, pulling out his new rifle and starts to trudge forward towards the base carefully.

"Sure, just like a video game," Tess thinks, as the others discuss the coming potential fire fight. Cass has likely seen action before, but I doubt any of the others have. Even these ex-navy probably only ever saw ship-to-ship combat, not direct fire. Is he truly the only one of us to have prior combat experience? I can hardly call my hits combat.

"Let's get this over with, then," she continues, as the others continue to speak and not act. "A ten minute round trip means at any moment they are only 5 or so away, less if we're spotted and they run. That gives us so little time. I will keep an eye on our surroundings to make sure we don't get caught off guard." As she speaks she brings bother of her pistols to the ready and follows after Creed, constantly scanning their surroundings for signs of immediate danger.

You push forward over the ridge still trying to keep low and with your weapons at the ready. Creed first leads you Westward, shadowing the patrol as they walk towards the hangers.

As they turn to head North towards the other side of the compound, you are nearly level with the parked patrol boat and do the same making your way across the open ground towards the partial cover the ship and its landing gear provides.

You spot the patrolling guards stop by the third guard once more, but this time they only stop for a few moments before continuing on their route. As you near the ship, you begin to make out more of its features. The hull is sleek and angular, painted black with orange accents - the colour of Idarete's old flag. On the side of the ship near the bow you see the ship's name and registery painted in blocky white letters

IDS FURIOUS MIDNIGHT
JX-3407-C2

You also spot the airlock about halfway along the ship, presumably on its mid deck from its height off of the ground. A ladder extends from a housing at the base of the airlock down to half a metre or so off the ground.

You reach the landing gear near its two large drive cones at the aft of the ship, and are able to duck in amongst it as you see the patrol rounding the corner on the other side of the landing pads and beginning to head back towards you. The ladder, and another on the other side of the Furious Midnight are about 25 metres ahead of you.

Cass' breathing tightens, now close enough to the Diktat patrols and engineers to spoil the plan with one misstep. He peers up at the Furious Midnight, admiring its beauty. Cuts a nice shape in this frozen shithole. Hope we can get her into the air.

"Okay,"

As the group approaches the ship, Tess' anxiety at their future flight returns once more. This is going to be a rocky take-off if we manage to pull this off, I know it, she thinks, eyeing the vessel and its features. If the ride doesn't cause me to vomit, this name just might. Who named this? A child who is super into anime?

"Of course," Tess responds, nodding to the man and agreeing to his assessment. The fewer people who can be spotted, the better. Let's just hope he is good at staying out of sight. "Don't get shot yourself, though. I can hopefully help rid us of hostiles, but I can't bring you back from the dead."

Hikaru gives the ship a onceover as they get closer and closer to it. Not quite a luxury interstellar yacht, but still a pretty sexy ship. Cool name too. Hope the inside's not a dump.

As Cass prepares to step out of their cover, Hikaru does his best to nod in the clunky suit. "Good luck. Don't do anything stupid." Maybe the guards will think he's some new maintenance hire. Doubt it with these ugly as fuck suits though.

Cass quickly makes his way forward aiming for the ladder up to the airlock about 5 metres or so off the ground. As he reaches it, the two patrolling soldiers pass the landed shuttle on the other side of the landing pads.

The ex-navy tech begins climbing the ladder as the soldiers slowly near the point where the ship will no longer block their view of Cass. The others can do nothing but watch as the soldiers get closer and closer and Cass climbs.

As the soldiers step past the ship they reach the engineers' truck. Just as they begin to go around the truck turning to face the ladder, Cass pulls himself up onto the small ledge around the airlock and pushes himself as far as possible into the small alcove the frame of the airlock creates.

A tense couple of seconds pass but the soldiers continue on their route, apparently unware they missed seeing an intruder by a fraction of a second.

"That was close," you hear Pia mutter into her radio, breathing a sigh of relief.

Cass hurriedly uses his meta tool to remove the screws and then pry open one of the panels that hide the door's mechanism. With some effort he manages to get it open and sets to work on the inside. After some fiddling he feels something click.

The small screen next to the airlock that would normally grant access swaps from red, indicating the airlock is locked, to orange, indicating an error. A few error codes appear on the screen quickly, before it prompts Cass with the option to either relock or open the exterior door. The two options are large buttons clearly designed with Vacc suit wearers in mind. Hitting open the door slides open.

While the compound's lights illuminate the landing pad. The light from inside the airlock is still noticeable, coming from the otherwise sleek dark ship's hull.

Glancing at the soldiers you can see they are only ten metres from reaching the defence battery at the end of the landing pads. Rounding the corner they will likely see the light from the airlock.

As the door starts to slide open you hear a slight hiss as the slightly different pressures of the interior and exterior equalise, but it lasts only a moment and then the door is fully open, revealing the interior of the airlock.

It is a small room 2 metres by 3 metres with each door set into a small alcove. To your left you spot the airlock's control panel, while to your right you see the ship's name and registry number written on the wall again above the housings to store two vacc suits. The vacc suits are gone however, with only a single spare oxygen tank left on the floor.

The interior airlock door is partially glass, allowing you to see into the next room of the ship, which appears to be a large central room. On the far side you spot the door to the Port airlock, while in the middle is a platform that looks like it could be an elevator. A couple of containers line the wall on the far side of the room opposite what appear to be lockers on your side.

With his heart pounding, Cass catches sight of the approaching guards. The light, he realizes, peering deeper into the airlock. Shit.

He slips into the chamber completely, quickly finding the panel to shut the airlock door and pressing the button. Over his suit comms, he warns the others. "Closing up shop. Let me know when the jarheads pass."

Cass stands rigid, finger hovering over the button, waiting for their response.

Before the soldiers turn to face the ship, the airlock door slides shut, its light safely hidden from view. Cass' meddling with its internal mechanisms of the door had not luckily had any lasting damage. The soldiers continue their patrol still unaware of your group's presence, now both on the ground and aboard the ship.

For those on the ground it looks like it should take another 2 or 3 minutes before the soldiers pass the Furious Midnight, at their current pace, and their view of the ladder to the airlock will be obscured by the ship.

"Probably like two to three minutes and they should be out of the way til their next pass," Hikaru responds over the radio, anxiously watching the tarmac around them. Shouldn't it be time for their mandated break or something? Actually, I doubt the Diktat's even that generous. Bet these clowns are real happy with their lives. He sighs, hoping they're in the clear soon enough.

Cass sighs, lowering his hand. Slow-ass ambulation. Let's pick up the pace. He presses the button to cycle the airlock, figuring he has enough time.

"Gonna case the ship. Ping me when they're almost gone, I gotta recycle this airlock before I open up."

He waits impatiently for the process to finish, then makes his way midship and past the airlock.

Cass

You hear the rush of air as the air lock begins cycling. You notice one of the readouts on your suit HUD begins to change as the atmosphere around you does. The both the airlock's controls and your suit prompt you about 30 seconds later letting you know the air is now a breathable mix.

You hit the button to open the interior airlock door which slides open without complaint. Stepping into the next room you hear nothing but the noise of your own suit. You turn your attention to the lockers which appear to have been stripped bare. Some of the doors still hang open as if it had been done in a hurry. Either the Idaretian crew before handing the ship over or the Diktat's men taking anything of value you surmise.

Peering inside the lockers you see they were clearly set up to serve as the ship's equipment locker and armoury with specialised mountings for different firearms and other items. They have been efficiently ransacked, although you do manage to find a single forgotten Type A power cell and a pair of military binoculars at the bottom of one of the lockers.

Examining the crates on the other side of the room you find them unsealed and empty much like the lockers. Looking through the window in the door by the crates you see another airlock, identical to the one you just entered the ship through.

Through one set of the wider doors, looking towards the front of the ship, you see a long corridor which ends at another set of doors which do not have windows in them - not that you'd be able to see anything from this distance. You spot 4 other doors along the corridor as well as stairs on either side leading upwards, presumably to the next deck.

The other set of double doors, towards the rear of the ship, also have a window however this window has a built in holographic display. "Authorised Personnel Only" scrolls across the glass in red block letters. Behind the warning you can make out, what appears to be the reactor room - based on your experience in the League Navy. You also spot a few more doors leading off from the reactor room.

Cass runs a covered hand along one of the lockers, the sudden reintroduction of military ship aesthetics giving him a rush of ambivalent thoughts. It wasn't easy, back in his navy days — living months at a time out in the darkest reaches of vacuum. If we're lucky, this is home now. I'm... not sure how I'm supposed to feel about that. He sighs. Guess it's better than that glorified closet back in Idarete.

He moves through the midship deck, peering in the different rooms and noting their contents. Typical mil-ship fare. Reactor in the rear, bridge ahead I'd guess. Wonder if they left us with any fuel pellets. Otherwise this is a failed cause.

"What's the word?" Cass asks through the suit channel, making his way back toward the airlock after a couple short minutes.

Hikaru keeps his eyes fixated on the patrol, waiting for them to pass the ship and lose their visibility once again. He perks up as Cass' voice appears through the comms, eager to move. "Patrol's out of sight. Ready to go, I guess. You good?" Can't wait to get off this rock... Not that a hunk of lousy metal in space is much better, but still.

"Yeah, good," Cass says back in a hurry. He taps an oversized button on the panel, engaging the ship's pumps to return the room to vacuum. "Okay, cycling the airlock — count to thirty if you're anxious. When the door opens, get your asses in here. Gonna be tight with the seven of us, but do it quick... and keep your heads down! The guards might be past us, but those engis are still out there, yeah?"

As if on cue, thirty seconds after Cass' radio message, you see the light shine out from the airlock once more. Without the need to physically open the door like Cass did, all six of you should be able to get up the ladder and into the ship before the patrol passes the ship again, although there is still a chance one of the engineers may spot you.

Tess watches intently as the patrol moves by, sighing as Cass barely escapes getting caught. When word comes that they can climb aboard, she thinks to herself how nice it is that they have not had to shoot anyone yet. Maybe we won't at all. It would be so nice to start this journey with zero injuries, I can't imagine zero-g is good for treating them.

Doing her best to stay as stealthy as she can, she makes her way to the ladder and up into the airlock. She finds the vacc suit clunky at first, but manages to work within its limitations and make her way without making much sound. Hope the others don't have any issues. We are so close!

"Good work, Cass," she says to the man when he is in view once more, in the airlock. "This has gone a lot smoother than I expected so far. You're pretty good at this stuff, huh?"

The six of you still on the ground make your break for the ladder, keeping an eye on the engineers across the way. It takes a little while for all six of you to climb the ladder but luckily it appears the engineers are too preoccupied with their work refitting the other ship to notice you.

You just about manage to all squeeze into the airlock and Cass hits the controls. The door shuts and the air lock begins to cycle, about 30 seconds later the controls and your suits show the air as breathable and the interior door unlocks, allowing you to all step out into the next room of the ship.

"I don't think they saw us," Marko says after unclipping his suit helmet and removing it. He runs a gloved hand through his hair in a futile attempt to fix it.

Cass allows himself a moment of relief, if only for not being shot at this time. But they still can, he thinks, remembering the defense battery on the eastern side.

"Act like they did," he responds to Marko. "And keep that thing on. We're not safe yet. If they put a round through our hull deep enough to vent us, you're gonna wanna have your helmet on." He checks his sensor, noting only a precious few minutes of air left. "I guess we'll need to find a refill."

The tech sighs. "I've still gotta get this tub cracked. Creed, as soon as I'm done, we're pointing the nose toward that generator and shooting whatever this thing has at it. Then get us the fuck off this shithole."

Cass looks at the others, studying them. "Guess that means we'll need a gunner."

"Yes Sir," Marko responds to Cass with a slight smirk, although he does comply putting his helmet back on.

As Cass mentions needing a refill of air, Pia begins looking around the room, investigating the storage lockers. "There's a valve here, I guess it's where they used to store spare tanks," she says stepping aside from one of the lockers and pointing to a small valve and control panel inside it.

She disconnects her tank from her suit and hits a couple of buttons on the controls - adjusting the mix of air - before clipping her tank to valve and hitting confirm. The tank hisses as it refills taking about twenty seconds before the display shows it as full. She removes the tank and hooks it back up to her suit's systems.

Inside her suit she takes a deep breath which she holds for a moment before exhaling dramatically. "Well it seems like it's the air it says it is," she says with a smile. "If I drop dead in a few minutes we'll know it's tainted at least."

Based on your experience you'd expect to find the kind of access you'd need either on a ship's bridge, ops room, or CIC - depending on its layout. Either way you'd expect those rooms to either be in the middle of the ship or towards the front.
