Feeling in the zone with a system at his fingertips, Cass makes the first move against their target who has arrived into the main hanger bay. He locks down all doors with a few swipes, and then beckons Hikaru. "Press and hold this button to speak through the intercom," the engineer advises his captain. "Remember, we want them to think they're totally fucked and surrender is their best option."

Hikaru frowns as Cass instructs him on the intercom, mind already racing. Always on me to talk us out of trouble. Pressure's on... He takes a deep breath, trying to strategize in his mind. Guess the truth is pretty grim for them. He steadies his voices and presses the button on the intercom. "Captain Hartjen, we have you surrounded. The Blackstar betrayed you and your ship is salvage. Comply with our demands, or you're dead." He pauses for a moment, hoping his words deliver some weight to the situation. "Put your guns on the ground and stand against the wall, now."

The four who emerged from the mine have made their way through the door propped open by one of the dead miners and into the main hanger by the time Hikaru speaks over the intercom. The voice appears to catch the two humans by surprise, while the VIs don't react.
Through the grainy security footage they both appear to listen intently. The wounded man responds by throwing the pistol he was holding on to the hanger floor, which slowly bounces several times before coming to a stop due to the low gravity. While the other, Hartjen, keeps his grip on the laser rifle he is holding.
"Pick that back up right fucking now," the pirate captain orders his subordinate, pointing at the pistol with his own weapon.
"First of all, who the fuck are you? Are how do I know anything you say is true?" He then shouts, looking up and around the hanger ceiling before his gaze comes to a stop on one of the security cameras, looking straight down the lens.
The other man lets go of the VI he was using for support and takes a small step towards his discarded weapon, but makes no further efforts to pick it up. He eyes his captain apparently waiting to see how things play out further.

"Right," Hikaru says, Cass's suggestion swirling around in his nearly-overwhelmed brain. Focus, Hikaru. We can do this... He takes a gulp of air and presses the intercom button once again. "If you pick up that gun, you lose that hand. Leave it on the fucking ground," the pop star says, doing his best to speak in a tone that even pirates would understand. He relaxes his voice, growing more cocksure with his next words. "Tell me, Captain. Are you getting anything from the ships on your comms?" he asks, already knowing the answer. He pauses for a moment and smirks to himself, hoping to demoralize them further. "Captain Malik sends her thanks, by the way. Your ship's a better haul than she could've hoped for."
He looks over his ragtag group for a moment and grins. "And who are we? Just the hired guns who tore a hole through your ship."

Tess and Creed make their way past the crew quarters and around to their firing positions while the scene in the hanger continues to play out.
The VI sent to open the door finds the controls non-responsive thanks to the lock down initiated by Cass. It lowers its weapon arm and raises the other to the door control panel. It is hard to make out with the angle and quality of the grainy security footage but its hand begins to change as pieces slide and rotate out of position and into new ones. It takes a couple of seconds but soon the VI has some sort of metatool in place of its offhand. The tool begins to move, starting to cut its way into the door control panel with a small laser cutter. The VI appears to be making short work of the door and it's unlikely the locked door will keep them at bay for a meaningful length of time.
Meanwhile, Hartjen appears to ignore Hikaru's further provocations, instead focusing on the other pirate who appears even more rattled with the threat of losing a hand. Hartjen squeezes the trigger of his rifle and a large scorch mark appears on the ground next to his crewman.

Cass feels a tremble in his gut and he grimaces, letting out a deep sigh. He takes another breath, allowing his calculating, tactical mind to take over his emotional one. Over the Makkuro comms network, he sends word to the whole crew. "The bot's cutting through Max's door and Hartjen's not standing down. Firefight's inevitable -- venting them won't be possible with their magboots and vacc suits. Hey, Cap," he says, turning to face the popstar still in the room with him while continuing to transmit. "I got this covered. I can open the doors on your call. You wanna double-up with Tess or Creed? As soon as we ambush them, I'll rush to cover Max."

You ready yourselves waiting for Cass to push the button and open the doors. Meanwhile the VI continues to cut through the door, showing signs that it will get through the door any moment now. Hartjen, the other VI, and his surviving crewman wait although they clearly anticipate something will happen soon, whether it be an attack from you or their own offensive once the door is opened.

Cass grits his teeth, giving a quick count down from three before tapping the button on the screen. Without hesitation, he grabs his rifle, shoulders it, and rushes toward the corridor.

Hikaru gulps and takes a nervous breath as he hears the doors open next to him, eyes momentarily shut as his nerves take over. Keep it together... It's just a video game. He clutches his pistol and shuffles towards the opened passage. He drops to the ground, trying to make himself a smaller target, and eyes the targets before him. He takes aim at Hartjen, knowing he's the largest threat and unsure if his pistol is capable of tackling the reinforced VIs. You've got this, he thinks, taking a deep breath and pulling the trigger.

As the doors open you unleash a volley of laser and mag fire on the pirate team. Cass' well placed shot nearly cores out the VI's main power unit leaving it noticeably damaged. Meanwhile Hartjen is only able to avoid Creed's shot, the laser beam scoring the hanger door in the distance behind him. Hikaru's wings him - his armour apparently absorbing most of the blast - but clearly causing damage, it is shortly followed by the slug of Tess' mag pistol impacting him in the shoulder. It smashes through his armoured vacc suit before coming out the other side and embedding itself in the hanger wall behind him.

As Max swings at the VI it moves surprisingly quickly for its damaged state. Its off hand, which had previously transformed into a meta tool to cut the door open, suddenly changes once again. It extends itself, growing longer, and electricity begins to flow through it, crackling and arcing through the air around it. It brings its arm up to meet Max's telekinectic blade and the two clash together. They remain locked together but the VI appears to gain the advantage over Max as it starts to push his sword back.

Some relief washes over Hikaru as the firefight seems to be going their way, a small smile even forming as he sees the one VI fall to the ground, destroyed. We can do this... Just gotta take out Hartjen. He takes a deep, focused breath and aims his pistol again.

Cass' shoot cores the VI in front of Max as Tess' second shot drops Hartjen. The pirate captain coughs up blood before slumping against the container behind him and falling to the ground. His rifle clatters to the floor before suddenly collapsing on itself to a weapon the size of a pistol, while another small object falls from the man's gear. A small jet black pyramid, about the size of an apple, it hits the floor and doesn't bounce - an odd occurrence for the low gravity of the station - skidding to a halt a few feet from the crumpled corpse of its owner.
Meanwhile the remaining VI and pirate continue to fight back. The VI keeps advancing on Creed firing as it does, although it's laser fire does nothing but score the wall behind the pilot. The pirate moves to cover further towards the hanger door and takes a shot at Hikaru. Now in a better firing position his aim approves and his shot singes the popstar's hoodie.

Watching as her previous quarry falls, Tess notices the small item that falls from his person to the ground. "What is that?" Tess shouts to everyone, as she moves further into the room, right at the edge of the doorway. "Do you think it controls the Vi?" she ponders aloud, taking aim for the remaining pirate as she does so. Having a Vi of our own would certainly be useful, if we can salvage one of them.

Max's attack batters the remaining pirate, momentarily knocking him out of his cover and giving Tess an opening. Her shot strikes the man in the neck and he slowly falls to the ground in the low gravity, his lower legs remaining upright thanks to his mag boots. Even left alone the last VI appears to show no sign of backing down.

It's lights off and servos motionless. With the fight over a silence falls over the hanger for a moment as the five of you find yourselves alone on the outpost once more.

"Well," Tess says, as she steps further into the room, keeping her pistol at the ready in case their foes remain conscious. "That took less effort than expected," she continues, stepping towards Hartjen's apparently lifeless body. She kicks it a couple times and grabs his head, but once it is clear the man is fully dead she holsters her pistol and bends down to search his person. She peers at the pyramid-shaped item on the ground as well, but opts not to touch it in case it is some sort of explosive.

Picking up the weapons, you find that the pirate's pistol is a standard laser pistol - appearing to be a very similar model to your own. Hartjen's rifle, while you're not directly familiar with it, you do recognise the technology as being League in origin. You find the rifle has collapsed down to the size of a pistol and with the simple press of a button it can reextend into its rifle mode.

"Hartjen was packing heat," Cass says, marveling at the experimental design. He presses the button, extending it into rifle form, before pressing it again to return it to pistol form and stowing both guns in his pack. "Talk about an upgrade."
He nods toward Tess, eyeing the black pyramid. "If it's VI control, I sort of handled that already," the engineer says, stepping triumphantly over one of the drone's destroyed cores. He picks up the device from the ground, inspecting it closer.

Hikaru breathes a sigh of relief as the last of their foes crumbles, slumping over on the ground for a moment as he regains his composure. Looking down at his hoodie, he frowns at the laser-induced singe. Damn it, this was expensive too... He grits his teeth, picking himself up from the floor. "Yeah," he responds to Tess, stepping into the main bay again. "But nice work either way. They really didn't know what hit them." He shrugs to Cass, gesturing towards the hole in his hoodie. "Nothing a little rest and a shopping spree won't fix, I guess."

Cass
You pick up the pyramid, which strangely doesn't feel particularly heavy given the way it didn't bounce when it fell to the floor. Examining the object further you don't recognise it but, as far as you can tell, it doesn't appear to be made by the League, the Diktat, or any of the other independent worlds in the known sector.
As Cass runs his fingers along the sides of the pyramid, it's begins to glow with a light bluish green light, along several shallow lines etched into its surface. As they do, the top of the pyramid begins to open up. As it does it creates a holographic display above it, first creating several points of light - most glow white but several glow a deep green. It then zooms in on one on the green dots, and as it does, smaller points of light appear orbiting around it, which you recognise as the XK-539 system. It continues to zoom in, focusing on one of the green orbs of light which as far as you can tell appears to be representation of the asteroid you are currently stood on.

Tess grabs the credit chip and pops it into her backpack. She then grabs the two power cells and steps over to Hikaru, handing them off to her friend. "Extra ammo for your new toy," she says with a smile. Not waiting for him to accept, she leaves the cells with him before heading over to the other pirate to inspect his corpse for any further goodies. As she walks, she passively watches Cass and the apparent map that he has found. "What do you think the green spots represent?" she asks, as she kneels down to check the other body.

Cass stares at the strange interstellar map for a long moment before realizing the significance. "It's a map of the sector," he says in astonishment. "These here? Must be new systems. Fuck, not even the League Navy knew about these. At least not on any official mapping I ever saw."
He sighs, his mind racing. "We can merge its data with whatever we have onboard. This is huge."

Hikaru cocks an eyebrow as Cass explains the object, almost mesmerized staring into the orbiting lights. "New systems, or something else?" the pop star asks, crossing his arms as he focuses upon the celestial map. "It sounded like Hartjen was hunting for something here. What did his friend say again? Something about the Augury?" He pauses for a moment, mind racing with different theories. "They were here for a reason, and I don't think it was just an easy mining haul."

That said, going through his pockets you do find a spare energy cell, the man's compad, three thermal flares and 40 metres of rope. The compad's screen is cracked but it appears to be in working order.

"We saw what they looked like after coming up from the mines," Tess responds, shaking her head at Cass' words. "Something bad is happening in that mineshaft, and I don't see any reason for us to stick around and find out what. At least without more support and a plan. Cass grimaces, his mind now locked on what horrible things might be going on deeper below. "Yeah, you're probably right. Maybe we should head back to the Makkuro and send them a broadcast that the pirates are dealt with. If they want us to go digging further we're going to need more details. And to renegotiate our terms."
He stands idly, taking a breather while he waits for Tess to go through the man's compad. "Anything on the Augury?"
