KCAI: Conflict Resolution Department — OOC

Post by Namelessjake »

While the streets of New Sevastopol are violent, harbouring drug addled gangs and psychotic murderers, and corporate greed run amok means abject poverty and suffering are rife - the glittering glass and neon towers of the Plaza, at the City's heart, are perhaps even more dangerous. In every room on every floor of every skyscraper, employees and employers alike connive and conspire, plotting the downfall of their rival corps, branches, supervisors, subordinates and coworkers.

A ruthless and cutthroat place, when the blows are not dealt from across the boardroom table, they will be dealt from the shadows from the barrel of a gun or the tip of an assassin's blade. Untold wealth and power awaits those who can not only survive such an environment but thrive within it.

Character Hook

You are members of a team belonging to the Kurosawa-Callaghan Amalgamated Industries Conflict Resolution Department, a secretive organisation, even by megacorp standards, tasked with resolving both intra and intercompany issues in a clandestine and deniable manner, before they can hurt the company’s bottom line.

Whether you were born to this life or had to claw your way up from nothing, you have successfully navigated the cutthroat and ruthless halls of the Callaghan Building, as well as the brutal and unforgiving streets in the field, outcompeting colleagues and fending off rivals to get to where you are now.

You are relatively new to this position, having joined the department in the last six months, but your team has already completed several missions together, winning the favour of your section’s supervisor. While everyone may be out for themselves, the ability to work as a team is vital as one successful mission could be all that stands between your career being propelled to new heights, while a high profile failure could see you cast out, abandoned and blacklisted.

All characters' first language choice should be this dialect of Mandate.

The largest and the richest of all the corporations, Kurosawa-Callaghan Amalgamated Industries are headquartered in New Sevastopol, where they were founded. A burgeoning construction conglomerate at the time of the space boom, they were uniquely poised to benefit from the paradigm shift that saw Eden’s entire economy look to the stars.

Much of New Sevastopol’s infrastructure was built by Kurosawa-Callaghan in this time, including the space port, however they truly made their mark by leading the conversion of the old Mandate jump gate into the Ring orbital station. While they have diversified over time, using their wealth to buy up and absorb smaller corporations in other industries, the demand for more space habitats and colonies, and the demand for the resources to build them, has kept their focus on construction.

They are a calculating corporation that never reacts out of emotion, always focusing on profit above all else, making allies and enemies of the other corporations frequently, regardless of any previous grudges or alliances, if that’s what profit demands.

Conflict Resolution Department

The CRD, as it is called, is one of several black ops divisions within the KCAI corporate umbrella. Sitting under Human Resources in the organisational chart, the CRD offers the company a deniable solution to problems both inside and out of the company, dealing with both rival corps, pesky government officials and unruly KCAI executives.

Owing to the nature of the work, the department is shrouded in secrecy, with it's small teams of field agents working independently with only one or two direct managers overseeing their assignments, limiting other department's knowledge of the CRD and its workings, but also reducing CRD teams' own knowledge of company matters should they be exposed or compromised.

Due to far reaching powers of the department, CRD agents are considered mid-level corporate employees, able to pull rank on most of the drones that make up the bulk of the corporate apparatus, and the department is often considered a desirable posting, especially as it pulls people from across the organisation, giving its teams a breadth of skills and experience.

Supervisor

Virginia Wescott, Vice President of Conflict Resolution
Appearance
Image
Bio
A rising star within KCAI, Wescott is young for one holding a VP position, however she is clearly ambitious, intelligent, cunning, ruthless and backed by powerful people above her, possessing all the elements required for long term success within the corporation.

She runs the department with an iron fist and does not take kindly to failure, however your team has recently impressed her and she seems to be favouring you over the other CRD teams at her disposal.

Field Agents

Agent Yana "Mitz" Mieckiwicz, Dead-Eye Detective | Law Enforcement | Educated, Veteran's Luck | Level 3
Agent Aries Novak, the Socialite of Subterfuge | Spy | Wired, Ghost | Level 3
Agent Kingston “Prince” Holbrook, Skilled Security Sharpshooter | Corporate Security | Wired, On Target | Level 3

Support Elements

Anya “Control" Paulsen | Team Coordination and Tech Support
Appearance
Image
Bio
A former criminal operator and expert hacker, Anya used to actively work against the interests of the corporations. She is evasive if pressed on the change in line of work, but it is clear someone is keeping her on a short leash.

While a member of your team, Anya’s role sees her monitoring your progress during missions, coordinating via radio and providing limited tech support, from either your offices in the Callaghan Building or from a mobile command centre if necessary.

She is often cold and shows some disdain for the corporate world, however she is highly competent and follows orders without question, even if her professionalism is sometimes lacking. While she is clearly working for KCAI under duress, she has, over time, begun to warm up to the rest of you as her co-workers, often cracking dry or sarcastic jokes over the radio during missions.

Shared Assets and Team Equipment

CRD teams are expected to work with a degree of autonomy, sourcing and modifying their gear and equipment as necessary. While able to requisition nearly anything through official channels, such requests still come at a cost that often goes beyond monetary, meaning somethings are on occasion better sourced through other means, lest you end up owing other departments favours.
Assigned Vehicle

Office and Black Sites
Office
Your current office consists of a small four desk cubicle area and a small staff room on Floor 21 of the Callaghan Building's East Tower in the Plaza. Contained deep within the structure, it uses screens in the place of windows, displaying live feeds of the City's skyline.

Black Sites
You have yet to set up or gain access to any Black Sites.
Discretionary Funds
While most assignments will come with bonuses payable to team members individually, some rewards will be paid to the team as a whole, sitting in a shared account for discretionary spending within the corporation. Just make sure to fill out and submit your expense forms.

Intel

A record of any important intel pertaining to any of your goals, important NPCs, ongoing schemes, or potential future missions will be kept here.

Locations

While your assignments are likely to take you all across New Sevastopol, the vast majority of your work will probably be conducted in the Core Districts of the City. Focused around the Spaceport and the corporate towers of The Plaza, the Core of New Sevastopol is the pinnacle of the city. While some of its outer districts can still be rough around the edges, the sheer amount of people and commerce that flows through these districts every day ensures that wealth permeates them all.

The Plaza

Filled with enormous glittering towers, the Plaza is the seat of corporate power in Arcadia and the City. Access into the district is highly limited to regular citizenry with corporate connections being a must. Many high ranking corporate employees never leave the Plaza, living and working exclusively within the district. The government and police’s presence in the Plaza is nominal at best, as the area is locked down by near omnipresent corporate security meaning the violent crime seen across the rest of the city is nearly entirely absent save for the occasional high risk clandestine operator mission or suicidal agitator attacks.
Important Places
Corporation Offices

Callaghan Bulding - The global headquarters of KCAI, and your current base of operations. It consists of five towers, with the central largest tower being the tallest building in the City, at 150 floors, the other four smaller towers are still impressive in their own right and are connected to the central tower by bridges

Falcon Tower - A large glass tower that serves as Falcon Financial Securities' regional headquarters. It sits atop the New Sevastopol stock exchange.

Ultramax HQ - An older but still impressive angular tower of glass and steel that serves as the global headquarters for Ultramax SAE. At night, at the tower's pinnacle, a large holographic projector emits a large spinning Ultramax Logo.

The Greenspire - While AGK Incorporated's main regional headquarters stands in the Jericho Fields district, the Greenspire is their main presence in the Plaza. Smaller than the other corporate buildings, but still impressive, the Greenspire sports a large number of plant covered panels and garden balconies.

Robodyne Complex - The regional headquarters for Robodyne International and home to several of its largest Arcadian subsidiaries. Similar to the Callaghan Building, it is actually a wider complex of buildings due to the different subsidiaries reluctance to working in such proximity, though the parent company itself does maintain offices throughout the complex.

Prometheus Centre - While they maintain power and water facilities across the City with accompanying local branches, the Prometheus Centre, a large grey concrete building, serves as the administrative heart of energy giant.

Government Buildings

National Assembly - The National Assembly Building hosts the government of the FRA, with all four branches of government being housed under its roof, where legislation is introduced, lobbied for and voted on. Its large grounds host an array of administration, security and other buildings, including Svalbard House - the residence of the republic's President, and a number of onsite offices belonging to corporate lobbying groups.

City Hall - While national scale issues are addressed in the halls National Assembly, local issues fall to the office of the mayor of New Sevastopol in City Hall. While the city's district governments tend to operate with a large degree of autonomy, ultimately they are accountable to the mayor and other city councillors.

Other Places of Note

Shinjiro Tower - Shinjiro Tower is a one hundred story tall luxury hotel that regularly hosts heads of state and powerful CEOs, offering unparalleled service and security to all of its guests. Serving as neutral ground, it is a common destination for inter-corp business meetings with many a deal struck at the tables of its opulent boardrooms.

The Clinic - The New Sevastopol Medical Centre, or simply The Clinic as it is known colloquially, is the largest and most well equipped hospital in the City. It provides the gold standard of modern medical care, to its premium insurance policy holders, and its surgeons are unparalleled when it comes to cyberware implantation and removal.

Mirage - A large mystic desert themed high-end nightclub that takes up the entire top floor of an arcology, offering 360 degree views of the Spaceport and the Plaza. Out of all the clubs in the City, the Mirage is currently considered the place to be and be seen by the execs and socialite residents of the Plaza.

Aetherium - Another of the most famous nightclubs in the City. Aetherium, will its heavenly decor and angelic dancers, was once the hottest club in the City. While that crown is currently worn by the Mirage, Aetherium is still a luxerious and prestigious venue. Though still high end, its clientele has changed over the years and it is now a favourite of successful, wealthy, and usually corp backed, criminals and operators who still want to live the high life the Plaza can offer, while not rubbing shoulders with their employers on the dancefloor.

Agent Aries Novak, the Socialite of Subterfuge

Background
Background and Concept Elements
1) Appearance: Aries is a young man in his late twenties, a lithe but toned figure standing at around 175cm tall. Owing to extensive cybernetic and aesthetic surgeries, his face and figure are modelesque, nearing perfection in such a way that would be impossible naturally. Yet while some strive for flawless perfection, Aries stopped just short, knowing many find attraction in unique flaws and find the truly flawless to look uncanny. Though often concealed with sunglasses, he has hazel-blue eyes, a permanent reminder that he is his mother's son and a reminder that he can be better than she ever was. He has short brown hair, always combed and groomed neatly. Owing to his cousin's connections and mother's credit card, his wardrobe is made up of some well-tailored items from luxury brands, and many cheaper pieces that failed to see the rack due to minor defects. Aries puts great stock into his appearance and, while some may call him vain, the results speak for themselves.

2) Personality: After years of practice and a bit of artificial augmentation, Aries exudes charm and projects confidence so well that he even believes it. Rubbing elbows with big wigs and influencers has taught him the art of schmoozing, and he's become fluent in bullshit when needed. Despite this, he tries to not come across as arrogant, always quick to apologize if he does. He can also be blunt and snarky, not taking the synthetic, overly manufactured nonsense of the city seriously. He does revel in attention though, desperately trying to fill a subconscious void he's felt since childhood.

However, when he becomes focused on his job, he knows when to sit back and observe, and when to slip away quietly. Though as ambitious as everyone in the high-stakes corporate field, he looks at someone like his mother not as an idol or goal, but a warning sign: one who threw away everything for their career. He wants to do better and be better. Overall, he's somewhat closed off and cold about his personal life and his past, but some details make his heart flutter and he can't help but share with a beaming grin. Even with his exterior seeming suspicious or manufactured, he cares deeply for his loved ones and wants to do them proud.

3) Early Life: Aries was born to Veridia Novak, not a product of love or careless fun, but a calculated and fatherless move. Veridia, then a middle manager for the Consumer Marketing Department, saw opportunity in having a child and chose the route of artificial insemination. Roughly nine months after choosing a suitable, and anonymous, selection, Aries was born. As Veridia tells it, she chose the name from a Top 12 Most Powerful Men in the FRA list. In actuality, this was a list of horoscopes and she failed to notice that one of the "men" was named Cancer. But, the name stuck and suited the young boy. The first several years of his life were full of naive wonderment, with Aries unaware that he was practically a trophy for her. She bragged about his school achievements, praised her parenting, and often went off about how she was adored. And Aries did love her for a time, unaware of just how superficial and manufactured her returned affection was.

His life was thrown into a whirl when he was fourteen, however. One evening, Veridia mentioned that it was nearly time for the annual Novak Mother/Son photo. In defiant teen angst, Aries proclaimed that he didn't want to do it anymore and Veridia's ego-driven panic caused tensions to boil over. The shouting match culminated in Veridia slamming her door and retreating into her room. She reemerged an hour later, after a glass of chardonnay and an alprazolam, and promptly told Aries that she didn't want to be his mother anymore and forced him out the door. Catching a ride on public transit, he made his way to his aunt and uncle's house elsewhere in the plaza. Naturally, they assumed Veridia had simply had a bad night and would be by in the morning to pick up their son. Instead, they found all his belongings neatly shipped to their doorstep, a note attached: He's your problem now.

4) Perfect Imperfections: The first several weeks were isolating; though his family would check up on him, he still rarely left his new room. Teenage turmoil intermingled with an existential crisis, something his young brain was wholly unequipped to deal with. How could anyone come to terms with what his mother had told him? Yet in the pain, he eventually came to a realization: maybe he was better off without someone so heartless and cruel. Little by little, he'd inch out of his bedroom and be faced with a relatively novel concept to him: unconditional love. In few month's time, he had mostly adapted to living with his extended family, fitting their dynamic, and actually feeling as thought he belonged. Though the fresh scars of his abandonment would still ache every now and again, he found he had a support system that he had never had before, with the exception of hired help.

As the years passed by, Aries fell into an ordinary routine again: school, sports, clubs, dating, and the looming existential dread of the rest of his life and what he was to do with himself. His oldest cousin Avalon was in her last year of fashion school, while Caspian was in his first year studying exercise science. Yet, he lacked any sufficient passion for a single core area. Media was too broad, entertainment too corrupt, and he found political science to be a joke given the state of the republic. Then, one day, a large sum was deposited into his account with a short note included: I am told that you do not know what to do with your life. I suppose I will make this easy for you. Take this amount and enroll in the Shinji Holz School of Marketing. Study hard, and perhaps we might make something out of you.

He read the sender, mouth agape as tears welled up in his eyes. His heart ached, yet he felt a glimmer of hope and a sense of longing he hadn't felt for years. Signed, Veridia Novak, VP Consumer Marketing, KCAI. And so, he buried his pain and held onto that hope. Following the instructions, he enrolled at the university. The next years seemed to fly by, his adolescent yearning fueling him as he largely kept his nose in the books and spared little time for his own social life. The day of his graduation, he looked to the crowd and saw his family there, seated near a familiar woman: his mother. She mustered a smile and spoke few words: See me in my office next week.

5) Mother Knows Best: His nerves were trembling as he rode the elevator up the Callaghan Building. His stomach lurched as it suddenly came to halt, the doors opening into the Consumer Marketing Department. A too-friendly receptionist and lukewarm coffee later, and he was led to his mother's office. He sat in a chair across from her desk, taking in the room: degrees, awards, and a sole photo of him in his graduation attire, the photography studio's watermark outing its nature as a sample print. Veridia did not waste any time with small talk and pleasantries, treating the exchange almost like an interview with a complete stranger. Toward the end, he asked why she had abandoned him, to which she bluntly stated that she did not wish to speak of the past. Yet, she spoke four words that made his body feel numb, a sensation that blurred the lines between good and bad: I'm proud of you.

Aries joined the department under Veridia, mostly acting as a personal assistant to her for a time under the guise of training. In actuality, he was being observed and subtlety manipulated to raise his opinion of her, to make him forget about their past because his mother was there now. And she was proud of him, a phrase that became a commonplace trigger in their interactions. She did, however, train him still, but not in pivot tables, corporate branding, or SWOT analyses. Instead, he was taught the gift of gab and the art of blending in. Though unaware of it at the time, he was being groomed for a new role under the department.

6) Glitz and Clamour: elite espionage

7) Call to Action: As the years went by, Aries consistently earn high marks on his annual performance reviews, even after being adjusted for nepotism, favoritism, and the various intoxication levels of his supervising staff. His espionage work in the marketing department earned a high return on investment, in one way or another, and gradually caught the attention of higher-ups. It began with an email to Veridia, the head of his department, informing her of their desire to transfer Aries to another department. Aries never heard word of this, however, until he was cornered by Wescott's assistant in an elevator and given an offer. After a few days of deliberation, he reached back out and accepted.

The adjustment to the new position was stressful, with Wescott leaving little room for failure despite such a dramatic role shift. While previously working alone and relying on his own wits and will to survive, he found himself thrown into a role of unfamiliar cooperation.
Goals
1) Aries wants to live free from his mother's influence and focus on a life with those who truly care for him.

2) I'd like to have fun with the cyber system and learn more about hacking, since Reiji won't really be doing either.
Secrets
1) Aries has kept a book of blackmail material from his espionage work under Consumer Marketing. Notably, he's also kept information on his mother. This book is mostly kept as a contingency, and he's not had to leverage any information in it yet.

2) Veridia Novak, his mother, actively tried to prevent Aries' promotion to the CRD, preferring to keep him under her department and, more importantly, her influence. To her, keeping tabs on her child and having a personal lapdog mattered more than his own success.
People Tied to Aries
1) Jett Sinclair is a C-list actor and Aries' boyfriend of nine months. The two first met at a movie premiere for a mediocre midseason horror/thriller named Hazard Lights. It barely broke even in the box office, and critics quickly noted the surprising level of homoerotic subtext. Jett starred as the deuteragonist, and was nominated for an award as the producer slept with a judge. Aries was unknowingly seated next to Jett during the showing, and muttered Damn, that guy's hot during one scene. Jett replied Eh, he's alright and Aries looked over to give a scowl before realizing. After the showing, the two talked more over drinks until Jett finally asked him out. Nine months later, and they're still together. He is sweet, spontaneous, and fairly lowkey. He's fairly private with his personal life and mindful of paparazzi, so his relationship is not widely publicized.

2) Avalon and Caspian Novak are Aries' cousins and practically older siblings to him. Being an only child, Aries didn't get the experience of siblings at home for the first several years of his life. Still, he would see them on holidays, birthdays, and "Mommy needs a break" days and grew close with them by the year. After being kicked out by his mother, the cousins quickly adapted to Aries living with them and the dynamic shifted. Avalon became the concerned and caring big sister with a boundless heart, and Caspian the fun and bold big brother who was always ready to distract Aries from his headache. Even in adulthood, the two are very protective and loving of him, and Aries appreciates and loves them in return. The three still have brunch together every week, on top of other family meals. Avalon is a successful fashion designer working for Nocturne, a luxury fashion brand under the KCAI umbrella. Caspian is a manager and personal trainer at Tyrannosaurus Flex, a gym themed after the prehistoric dinosaur age of Old Earth where through virtual reality and haptic technology, visitors can jog through an approximation of this era... or sprint from rapidly approaching carnivores.

3) Veridia Novak is Aries' mother and the Vice President of Consumer Marketing at Kurosawa-Callaghan. She is somewhat superficial and cold, with any motherly love and affection coming across as purely transactional. Though seemingly loving and doting while he was a child, he learned later in life that this was done entirely for appearances and the attention she'd receive. The two have had a tense relationship since she kicked him out when he was 14, having outlived his juvenile cuteness and obedience. Since he reached adulthood and she no longer had to deal with the responsibility of being a mother, Veridia attempted to reconnect and pull him back into her influence, using familial bonds to sway him into being a loyal tool. Though uneasy around her, he has generally tolerated her while trying to keep his own independence.

4) Vespera Vale, known mononymously as Vespera, is a famed singer, model, and attempted actress in New Sevastopol. Nicknamed the Queen Wasp by local media, she's made a living and generated buzz with her dangerous good looks, melodious voice, and her venomous stings against those who she feels wronged her. While some act as a diva as part of their stage persona, Vespera lives it, and she is an icon whom people either love to hate, or hate to love. She is arrogant, media-savvy, and deft at crafting a narrative that suits her. Aries first met her at a charity gala to benefit "dogs and cats that don't look dismal enough to be adopted." It was arranged by her publicist to counteract a brewing scandal, and Aries infiltrated it to get dirt on attendees. The two had an unpleasant interaction after she threw a drink in his face and slapped him for a paparazzi shot. She tried to brush it off as giving exposure, but an argument brewed. They've butted heads at events since.
Memories, Mannerisms, and Quirks
1) Aries vividly remembers the night his mother essentially abandoned him, and the pain he felt. Pounding on the door to be let back in til the lights turned off. Tears as he made his way to his relatives' house. The dumbfounded yet sympathetic expressions on their face the morning after. Despite his confidence and growth as an adult, he still remembers the heartache and it remains one of his biggest vulnerabilities.

2) After listening to one too many podcasts during the boring part of social functions, Aries has a growing interest in urban exploration. Though too busy and not quite brave enough to actually do it by his lonesome, he's been fascinated by the stories, believable or paranormal, surrounding the exploration of New Sevastopol's abandoned buildings and structures. He's most curious about seeing the arcologies of Oceania, if work would ever allow him the time. Until then, podcasts like New Sevastospooks, Neon Rust, and Glitch Bitch City are his guilty pleasures.

3) Aries has a tendency to wear sunglasses or visors while in public. While this helps to conceal his identity and disrupt facial recognition, this is merely a side benefit of its real purpose. In actuality, this is a habit born from have heard "you have your mother's eyes" one too many times. For years, he hated such a comparison tying him to her and tried to conceal it to never hear those words again. Though his eyes were replaced with synthetics, he's kept both the color and the habit, unable to truly part with either.
Background - Family/Class/Profession/Institutions
Family: Veridia Novak is the sole immediate family that Aries has, with her choosing artificial insemination rather than risk her career with insignificances like romance. He does however have an uncle and aunt, Dorian and Juno Novak, and cousins Avalon "Ava" and Caspian. He lived with them through adolescence and considers them his family more than his mother.

Class: For the first several years of his life, Aries was firmly among the elite class, with his mother being an executive for KCAI. Living with his uncle's family, he fell more into upper-middle class, and has lived a middle-class life since adulthood.

Profession: Aries is currently an agent for KCAI's Conflict Resolution Department, having risen through the ranks of the company and promoted from his "official" role as an Influencer & Events Marketing Analyst. In reality, his role was espionage on high-profile consumers and events.

Institutions: For most of his life, Aries has been a part of the Kurosawa-Callaghan corporate sphere. Aside from that, he's also a fledgling member of the Starlight Arts Foundation, an invite-only organization outwardly for networking in the entertainment industry and for the preservation of the City's cultural arts. Beneath the surface and especially within its upper echelons, it's a front for the ultra wealthy in the industry to consolidate power, indulge in exotic, questionable, or illegal pleasures, and otherwise engage in quid pro quo with one another.
Drives - Primary/Secondary/Tertiary
Primary: Money: Having spent time at many a lavish party, Aries knows that money doesn't buy happiness. But unlike the depressed and unsatisfied elites, he has little to compensate for and would rather be happy next to a private pool than in a cramped apartment. As such, he's always after the almighty dollar.

Secondary: Love: Though they've only dated for nine months, Jett is his everything and is finally someone he feels he can truly care for and be his true self with. His love and passions drive him, making him always want to do better and protect that which he cares for.

Tertiary: Attention: Despite being a spy and specializing in the covert, Aries revels in the limelight and loves being the center of attention. Whether this is due to his mother's neglect in his formative years, only a therapist can say.
Goals - Short-Term/Medium-Term/Long-Term
Short-Term: Aries wants to solidify his position in the CRD and continue his upward trajectory.

Medium-Term: Eventually, and assuming things continue to go well, he'd love to move in with his boyfriend Jett.

Long-Term: Aries wants to amass his riches and enjoy a life contact-free from his mother.
Crew Relations
Yana "Mitz" Mieckiwicz:

Kingston “Prince” Holbrook: Aries takes some comfort in having Prince around, knowing the man's a hell of a lot better shot than he is. He does sometimes wish the man would be less stiff and wonders if he could convince Prince to go clubbing some night, just to see what he's really like.

Virginia Wescott: Wescott reminds Aries somewhat of his mother, though not in a creepy or offensive way he'll remind. Both are ambitious and powerful women who would stop at nothing to achieve their goals, not caring for burned bridges if it means getting ahead. As a result, he is somewhat fearful of her but extremely careful to stay on her good side.

Anya “Control" Paulsen: Despite being cold and jaded, Aries has an appreciation for how real Anya actually feels compared to the types he's become accustomed to dealing with in the City. He respects her competence and finds the lack of professionalism a bit refreshing.

EDGES AND FOCI
EDGES

Ghost: Gain Sneak as a bonus skill and the Fighting Withdrawal combat action is an On Turn action for you. Once per scene, reroll a failed Sneak check related to sneaking or going unseen. Once per game day, as a Move action, move up to 10 meters without anyone around you seeing you move. If you use this movement to get behind cover, you might seem to vanish outright to onlookers.

Wired: You may begin play with up to $200,000 worth of new or secondhand cyber. You don't need to pay for installation and its maintenance is covered for the next two months. You can redeem this Edge later in your career by paying double the cost of the cyber you selected; if so, you can trade this Edge in for a different one.

FOCI

Alert: Gain Notice as a bonus skill. You cannot be surprised, nor can others use the Execution Attack option on you. When your group rolls initiative, your vigilance allows them to roll twice and take the higher roll.

Many Faces: Gain Sneak as a bonus skill. You can maintain one alternative identity at a time per three character levels, rounded up. These identities have their own names, backgrounds, criminal records, financial dealings, and bank accounts, and will register as authentic to all normal corporate and government checks. If an identity is compromised or you want a different one, you can replace it with a week's work. False identities cannot be important people or involve corporations you don't have a Contact in already.
INSTALLED CYBERWARE
Aesthetic Augmentation Suite
$50K | Body | Sight | 2 Sys. Strain
Effect: Any standard fleshmod can supply beauty, but an aesthetic augmentation suite provides not only a fleshmod's versatility, but tailored pheromones, vocal harmonizers, social cue triggers, and an absolutely inhuman visual perfection. Subjects gain a Charisma score of 14, or a +2 bonus if already 14 or greater, up to a maximum of 18.

Holdout Cavity
$10K | Body | Medical | 1 Sys. Strain
Effect: A biosculpted torso pocket allows for the air-type, climate-controlled concealment of 2 Encumbrance worth of items inside the user's body and their easy access with a Main Action. Any given object stored can't be larger than a pistol or a tightly-folded suit of clothing, and the pocket's contents don't count against the user's Encumbrance limit. The pocket's signature is disguised against conventional scanning technology, and it cannot be detected without a manual strip search by a trained examiner.

Sharkskin Electrodes
$20K | Skin | Touch | 1 Sys. Strain
Effect: An implanted mesh of electrodes beneath the user's skin allows them to deliver debilitating shocks while grappling a target, even if both are heavily clothed. At the end of each round of grappling, the user inflicts 2d6 non-lethal electrical damage on anyone they grapple or who is grappling them. The shielding built into the cyber automatically negates non-lethal electrical damage for the user and halves lethal shocks.

Stick Pads
$15K | Limb | Touch | 0.5 Sys. Strain
Effect: Macroscale van der Waals generators allow the user's hands and feet to stick to vertical or overhanging surfaces, their full weight supported by one arm. They can climb such surfaces at their full movement rate with one free hand.

Syntheyes
$25K | Sensory | Medical | 0.25 Sys. Strain
Effect: These high-end cybereyes are designed to be indistinguishable from normal eyes under anything short of a medical examination. Any additional mods made to the eyes share this subtlety. They all have perfect 20/20 vision and integral flash protectors. A user with a pair of cybereyes halves the System Strain cost of cybernetic eye implants.

Eye Mod/Infrared Vision
$5K | Sensory | Medical | 0.25 Sys. Strain
Effect: The infrared vision this mod allows permits basic navigation in dark areas and make the presence of heat sources such as humans, engines, and infrared tripwires very obvious. The user gains a +1 bonus to any Notice checks to detect the presence of thermally-unshielded living creatures.

Synthears
$25K | Sensory | Medical | 0.25 Sys. Strain
Effect: This model of artificial ear is designed to be indistinguishable from normal ears. While the base model provides only normal human hearing, all are equipped with ear protection against loud noises. A pair of cyberears halves the System Strain cost of ear implants.

Active Sense Processor
$50K | Sensory | Medical | 1 Sys. Strain
Effect: Augmented sensory processing grants a +1 Wisdom modifier for all skill checks involving sensing or noticing things, up to a +2 modifier maximum.

Cyber Maintenance: $10K/mo (first 2 months paid for) (5% Total Cost/Month)
PROGRAMS
SUBJECTS

Camera: Any device that transmits audiovisual information. Some defensive hardware has its own onboard camera, which is susceptible to this target, while others rely on a separate device's input.

VERBS

Deactivate: Turn a device or piece of cyberware off. Most devices and cyber can be rebooted by the network or the user, but it'll take a Main Action and a round to do so. If a network alert hasn't been issued, the network may not notice a deactivated device until someone spots the problem.

ACQUAINTANCES
Lirio Mazehl is a good friend and ex-boyfriend of Aries' cousin Ava. He's a 32 year old man, quite toned with a tan complexion, short black hair, and a goatee. He works security at Club Manx in the Plaza, a venue frequented by the middling ranks of the corporations. Lirio and Aries became reacquainted when he infiltrated an event that had booked the club, and they have since crossed paths several other times. Aries has helped out occasionally with keeping tabs on unruly or suspect customers. Lirio's offered the club as a safehouse if Aries ever needs a place to lay low and blend in.

Ryna Lecampe is a 38 year old cyber technician operating out of the Plaza. She's a relatively tall and athletic woman with mint green hair often kept in a ponytail. Aries met her under his Liam alias, where he diffused a heated exchange amidst an intense round of pub trivia. After, the two bonded over their affinity for holodisc golf, and Aries showed her stock imagery of an adorable pup he claimed to be his. Her heart melted at the sight. Since then, they have competed in pub trivia together and even won the Brainiac's Cup, a plastic trophy as useless as the trivia facts. Her workplace deals in used and refurbished cyberware and she's offered to help Aries track down pieces if he needs.
ALTERNATE IDENTITIES
Liam Kross
Liam is a single, twice-divorced dog dad of an Arcadian Shepherd named Koda. He works a dead-end job as a data analyst for an insignificant subsidiary, and he loves to play holodisc golf with Koda on his days off. He lives a middle-class life, and is considering if he's ready to start dating again. He likewise does improv on Thursday, but isn't confident enough to invite his friends yet. Outside of a single traffic violation two years back, his record is clean.

Jaxon Hollywood
Jaxon is an influencer and actor based out of Nelson. He's perhaps best known as the face behind Quantum Rush, a soft drink pulled from the shelves after being found to cause heart attacks in teens, children, and animals, and having its continued profitability suffer. Most traces of marketing were scrubbed from web, but his memory lives on in the "oh yeah!"s he receives. He was also an uncredited series regular on a short-lived FalcoNX's teen comedy named Ctrl+Z High School, about a teen who gains the ability to undo mistakes but antics ensue. It was cancelled after one season when the showrunner was disappeared under Gablogian's instruction.

Background
Background and Concept Elements
Personality — Even-keeled, observant, and pragmatic, Mitz prefers to have all the facts in front of her before taking action. She rarely, if ever, loses her temper, and even when she loses control of a situation it's hardly apparent to those around her.

Whether she's behind a desk, a steering wheel, or the iron sights of her corporate-issue handguns, she carries a confidence and determination. To many, she's conceited or standoffish. But to her, that's just evidence of a lazy mind observing a diligent one. She's a workaholic, an alcoholic, and a closet Catholic. Her private life is just that, and it is rare for her to open up to others unless she needs to, or in the rare case, wants to.

Appearance — Somewhat tall, slim but in good shape from conditioning and despite the drug use. Mitz has wavy, black, shoulder-length hair that she keeps pulled back in a loose pony to keep out of the way. She is conventionally attractive, with full eyebrows, dark-brown eyes, and an angular jaw. She wears a smidge of make-up, mostly to hide the smoker's lines. She's usually not without a cigarette in hand, unless it is needed for taking notes or driving.

Mitz dresses conservatively and appropriate for the job: usually dress shirts in whites, blues, blacks, or greys; an ascot either plain or embroidered (a relic from her Law School days); plain grey or black slacks; and a detective's coat — lined with kevlar and reinforced in the shoulders and back. She's been told her style is boring, or dated, or unfitting for a woman, which only validates her choice in fashion.

Born by the Cross — Mitz was born Yana Vidalya Mieckiwicz, to a factory manager father and a mother who was the heiress of a regional corporate that was dismantled during the global wars. While her parents may have once enjoyed a life of stability and minor wealth, she did not. She grew up in Smith Cross, where the once-luminous facades of luxury and industry had long faded into irrelevancy, the district now home to other middle class forgettables.

What Smith Cross lacked in excitement or material enrichment, it made up for in its religious community. As the entry and exit point for many people to and from the rest of Arcadia, Smith Cross held many evangelists, the more adventurous of which were sent on yearly mission trips to rediscover the rest of the planet and bring the light of God into the darkness. The Mieckiwicz' family had long been part of the Antonian Church, a sect of Catholics who had itself schismed off of previous sects many times before. Her father was never quite as devoted, more so keeping up appearances, but her mother had deep roots planted by her generations past. Mitz and her younger brother Willis were avid believers, attending mass twice-weekly and serving the church elders where necessary at the behest of their mother.

Mitz went through the motions of early education, a natural-born scholar, instead using most of her extracurricular time chauffeuring friends around in her coupe, and the rest of it working to pay for her ride's upkeep. It was a simple life, one full of excitement as she learned the streets around her day by day.

From Law to Flaw — After finishing her primary schooling, Mitz was accepted into a corporate work-study internship under Falcon Financial Securities, a prestigious offer especially considering her lack of much of a pedigree aside from her mother's origins. She moved to Barton, where she attended Lorne-Trebalia Academy, the eponymously-named university branch of Lorne-Trebalia, the largest independent legal firm at the time.

During her time at LTA, Mitz underwent a crash course on all things legal, being thrust into courtroom scenarios in all manners: a public defender, a prosecutor, and even a bailiff at times. During her studies, she saw not only how the law was applied, but subverted, and not only subverted, but weaponized, on behalf of the megacorps. Law was no thing of justice nor equity — it was a tool in the pocket of those wealthy enough to bend or even break the rules for themselves and only themselves.

As part of a mandatory course with a partnering consulting group from EHV Arms Systems, Mitz received small arms training, as many lawyers in LTA's weave were expected to defend clients both legally and physically. This became reality when, one season, she was tasked with representing a man named Pietro "Omega" Rodriguez — an information broker and retro cyber collector. One of his paid tips had recently changed the balance of power at Ultramax SAE, and it wasn't long before a team of lawyers and assassins were working in tandem to end Omega's life in one fashion or another. The lawyers were textbook, nothing Mitz hadn't seen before, but she found herself quickly outgunned by their armed accomplices. In a heroic and lucky break, she managed to kill one of the attackers and wing two more, ensuring Omega's safety — while also taking a bullet to the shoulder herself.

After spending a week in the hospital, she was awarded a small pin from LTA, and while life went on almost immediately in the eyes of the university staff, Omega would go on to never forget her dedication. They remained fast friends after that.

Gumshoe Days — After graduating from the LTA work-study program, Mitz landed her first real career move under Prometheus Energy's Rapid Response & Analysis program, along with a move to Waterside. Her role was to perform on-site security and risk audits, especially at power grid locations with frequent incidents. When problems occurred, whether believed malicious or not, she would be dispatched immediately, rooting out the possibility of systemized attacks on the grid, and forwarding those concerns onto the management teams. More often than not, she would also be assigned to the follow-up militarized task force response, often in the form of a midnight raids on ganger depots stupid enough to have shot up a power substation.

The work was difficult, and stressful, and it took its toll on Mitz. She'd oscillate between only finding solace in the bottle, or in the confession box, and neither was good enough on its own.

During one year, she helped build a profile on a growing number of non-random attacks on the power grid. Squeezing witnesses and small-time grunts, she put together an airtight case that a small uprising of socialist terrorists inspired by the Red Zone were seeking to perform a full-system shutdown on Prometheus, in an effort to undermine megacorp control over New Sev. Nearly every Prometheus agent was assigned to the response task force (even some pulled in from local operator groups, or even consultant security from other corps). The terrorists' depot as hit at night, and it was a slaughter. At the height of the action, Mitz had fired upon a group of fleeing hostiles who refused to disarm or surrender. Advancing on their trail, she discovered her target: a boy not more than 10 who she had shot straight through the chest: center-mass, professional.

While she was lauded for her efforts and soonafter promoted, Mitz' mind could not stray from the face of that dead boy; cheeks flushed, eyes distant, mouth agape.

Around this time, Mitz' mother died. Nobody had expected it, and there were competing theories on what had truly happened. Mitz refused to believe anything other than natural causes, her detective mindset hypocritical in complicit denial. Willis spouted off with what sounded like conspiratorial drivel, and it had led to the two of them fighting more often than not. Within a year, their father was diagnosed with a rare form of aggressive cancer, one that was uncontainable by even the more advanced oncocidal therapy that Caldera could offer. Despite the pleading of both his children, he soonafter opted for assisted suicide. In Antonian belief, taking your own life is one of the Unforgivable Acts — one that denies both your soul access to Heaven, and your mind to the Terminus Cloud. The cracks in Mitz' relationship with Willis shattered, and they withdrew from each other.

The Gambit — The next few years Mitz spent with her head in her work and her mind on the bottle. She became a rising star in Prometheus' RRA program, promoted to a senior detective level and partnering with a man named Davis McDonald. The two worked closely, building a professional relationship and, in time, a platonic one as well. They were a perfect working match. Davis, a widower, had sworn off any new partners, and Mitz, too in love with her work and hiding from her guilt, would never develop those feelings either.

One day, Willis reached back out to Mitz after over two years of no contact. He had been freelancing, stealing server technology from various datacenters, before pawning it off on any fence who hadn't blacklisted him yet. In what he claimed to be a setup, he stole and fenced a particular haul of tech that ended up being counterfeit and useless. He now owed Falkner's Army a great sum of money, an impossible amount that he could never achieve from petty theft and back-alley deals.

At first, Mitz told him to sort out his own problems.

Mitz stumbles across some interdepartmental corruption within Prometheus, one that is poisoning locals in Horwood and covering it up, and instead of diving deep, she extorts her supervisor for a payout.

Gives payout to brother to bail him out

Extorted supervisor rats to Bradley Gustavson, who fires her

Synthesis — KCAI - Smith Cross

Hitting the bottle hard, withdraws from Omar, her brother, and McDonald.

Further bothered by Shix who is now on her case instead of her brother's.

After a long bender, she cleans up and attends church at Smith Cross, back again in her neck of the woods.

KCAI exec comes in, offers her a job

She takes it immediately, seeing it as a literal sign from God.

The last three years have seen her grow into the role, but the guilt from her past misdeeds has really weighed on her spirit.

Putting her best efforts into her work is the best way to run away from her flaws.
Goals
1) Mitz wants to climb into a top-ranking corpo job, eventually put down the gun, and maybe even one day retire to Haven.

2) I want Mitz to get in some fun car chases and detective work on the way there.

3) I want her to get Cyber'd out eventually, both for the mechanical benefit, and also to play deep into the transhumanist & Catholic guilt aspect.
Secrets
1) Mitz discovered an interdepartmental cover-up at Prometheus, where toxic waste was being released throughout Horwood, exposing the local residents to a nasty slew of carcinogenic or radiated compounds. Instead of taking any action about it, Mitz used her knowledge of this to extort a Prometheus executive. No corrective action was ever taken, and the locals are still being poisoned.

2) Despite the obvious mutual attraction between Omar and herself, Mitz hides much of her life behind a mask, and is too scared to go steady with him in fear of either of them being taken advantage by the forces that be. After having Willis get played by Falkner's Army, Mitz refuses to let anyone else into her inner circle. If they don't matter to her, they can't be used as a pawn against her.

3) Only Willis knows the truth about their mother: she did not die of natural causes. While his initial conspiracies were little more than wild claims to try and make sense of her senseless death, Willis eventually came across the truth. However, despite their renewed relationship, he has never shared this truth with Mitz in fear of breaking down what they've rebuilt.
People Tied to Character
1) Willis Mieckiwicz — Mitz' little brother, a long-time Smith Cross native. Willis grew up in and out of small-time gangs, engaging in petty theft, grey market sales, and other acts that went largely under the radar from the megacorps or anyone who meant anything. In his early 20s, he scammed a fence from Falkner's Army by selling goods he hadn't realized were counterfeit. Falkner's Army demanded their cut back, except he had already spent and lost it. He was pursued by Shix relentlessly, until Mitz risked her job to bail him out. Willis is naive, immature, malleable, but still somehow a good-hearted and empathetic, if largely flawed, person deep down.

2) Pietro "Omega" Rodriguez — Informant, see friends

3) Davis McDonald — fellow corpo PI from Prometheus

4) Omar Reed — Smith's Cross neighbor, single father to two young girls. Mitz has feelings for him but is too busy to pursue anything.

5) Father Mason — Leader of the Smith's Cross-based Antonian Church. Once-corp-enforcer, he nearly died from an explosive blast and instead turned to God. Cyber-eyes, ears, and full replacement limbs. Mitz has confessed to him for years now, and he is her spiritual advisor.

6) "Shix" — Falkner's Army enforcer that Mitz had to pay off, and still has some dirt on her and her brother.

7) Bradley Gustavson — Prometheus exec who fired her, has a bone to pick
Memories, Mannerisms, and Quirks
1) Smith's Cross til she dies, though her mother always talked about their life in Oceania before the wars.

2) Antonian Church of Eden — transhumanist Catholics who believe that as their body is replaced with cyber, they become closer to God and their sins are not just forgiven, but erased. Purgatory, cloud storage, etc.

3) Smoker, drinker, occasionally something harder. She knows she should stop but the stresses of her job, and her justification is that she can be forgiven / repaired later.
Background - Family/Class/Profession/Institutions
Family: Only a brother now. Her parents were on basic but after mother died early, her father soonafter went terminal and pursued assisted suicide.

Class: Working class

Profession: Detective turned corporate fixer

Institutions: Promethus Energy LLC, Antonian Church of Eden, now KCAI
Drives - Primary/Secondary/Tertiary
Primary: Keeping the Lights On - At the very core, Mitz' prime directive is to maintain her lifestyle, never retreating into the dark times after she lost her job with Prometheus. She'll do whatever is necessary in order to provide for herself, and to keep her brother out of too much trouble of his own.

Secondary: Ambition - Mitz wants to make something of herself. She doesn't owe it to her parents, to her brother, or to Omar: she owes it to herself and to her God. And she'll take whatever edge she can find to make it happen.

Tertiary: The High Life - Mitz sees the way of life that the wealthy have in Eden (and especially on the Ring). She wants that for herself. Whether that's partying in a penthouse, or sipping real whiskey by a pool, or behind the wheel of a muscle car, her innate materialism is a soft pulse pushing her forward.
Goals - Short-Term/Medium-Term/Long-Term
Short-Term: Prove her worth to the CRD with a string of successful tasks.

Medium-Term: Get more cyber installed. It's the only way that the sins she's committed (and yet to commit) will be forgotten.

Long-Term: Find a bougie desk job among KCAI elites and live like a queen.

Agent Kingston “Prince” Holbrook, Skilled Security Sharpshooter

Bio
Kingston, or Prince as per his unshakable nickname, is a veteran of KCAI corporate security. He has spent most of his career in the field, and while he has impressed, earning a transfer to the CRD, he often bemoans any quiet periods devoid of field work.

A crack shot and possessing several combat implants from his years of service, he is a formidable warrior though lacking in the tact and cunning that other corporate agents might possess from climbing the ladder in the office space. While he usually presents the cold exterior of a hardened soldier, it is more a result of knowing his place and aiming to not offend, rather than outright hostility - at least among his fellow KCAI employees.

Born to a single mother, a paramedic, in The Oaks, Kingston’s early childhood was one familiar to most in the city, hard and full of poverty. His mother worked hard, saving all she could at her job while also pocketing the odd piece of valuable chrome liberated from the recently deceased. Her efforts meant that from the age of 12, Kingston was able to attend a KCAI academy. Bullied at first by the children of higher ranking corporate employees, having not attended the lower tiers of corp sponsored schooling, he soon learned the value of fitting in and knowing ones place.

Blending into the corporate machine as a loyal future cog, he progressed through his corporate schooling. His academic performance was nothing special, though good enough to graduate, much to his mother’s delight, who saw her son in a stable corporate job as the answer to surviving New Sevastopol. The one area he had managed to excel in were the physical classes; track and field, target shooting and martial arts. As such, he was selected for enrolment into the KCAI’s security division, his KCAI academy graduate status promising a fast tracked career.

He performed his role diligently, though found it hard to impress when the task at hand was simply standing watch at a door or gate. He languished in the middling ranks of corporate security for his twenties, rarely putting a foot wrong but never given a chance to prove himself. His chance eventually came when on a protection detail, guarding an executive, his charge’s life was threatened in an assassination attempt.

A team of operators attacked the limo they were travelling in, causing it to crash and killing two other security guards assigned to the detail along with Kingston. Taking the initiative, he laid down covering fire before moving the exec from the crashed limo into a building across the street, which the operators then laid siege to. Despite their greater numbers and firepower, Kingston was able to hold them off, killing one, until backup police and corporate assets could arrive on the scene, causing the remaining operators to flee.

His actions drew the attention of his superiors and he soon found himself climbing the corporate ladder over the course of the next few years, before his service record eventually attracted the gaze of eye’s within the CRD, leading to a transfer request.

EDGES AND FOCI
EDGES

On Target: Gain a combat skill as a bonus skill. Your basic attack bonus is equal to your character level, instead of the usual half level, rounded down.

Wired: You may begin play with up to $200,000 worth of new or secondhand cyber. If secondhand, you roll once per system for its defect and may end
up with unusable junk. You don’t need to pay for installation and its maintenance is covered for the next two months. You can redeem this Edge later in your career by paying double the cost of the cyber you selected; if so, you can trade this Edge in for a different one with the GM’s approval.

FOCI

Deadeye: Level 1: Gain Shoot as a bonus skill. You can Ready a Stowed ranged weapon as an Instant action. You may use a rifle or two-handed ranged weapon even when an enemy is within melee range, albeit at a -4 hit penalty. You may add your Shoot skill level to a ranged weapon’s damage roll.
INSTALLED CYBERWARE
Gunlink
$25k | Sensory | Touch | Sys. Strain 1
Effect: Hardwired control points interface with the onboard targeting systems of most modern firearms. When using a modern firearm, the PC ignores range penalties and negates up to 2 points of hit penalties for cover, concealment, or prone targets. Once per scene, as an Instant action, they can reroll a missed attack roll with a gun.

Cybereyes (pair)
$10k | Sensory | Touch | Sys. Strain 0.25
Effect: These cybereyes are clearly artificial, though most are styled in attractive or striking fashions. They all have perfect 20/20 vision and integral flash protectors, but additional functionality must be implanted separately. A user with a pair of cybereyes or syntheyes halves the System Strain cost of cybernetic eye implants.

Eye Mod/Infrared Vision
$5k | Sensory | Medical | Sys. Strain 0.25 (0.5 halved)
Effect: The infrared vision this mod allows permits basic navigation in dark areas and makes the presence of heat sources such as humans, engines, and infrared tripwires very obvious. The user gains a +1 bonus on any Notice checks to detect the presence of thermally-unshielded living creatures.

Eye Mod/Tactical View
$10k | Sensory | Medical | Sys. Strain 0.25 (0.5 halved)
These eyes can receive text or video transmissions and play them on an inset in the user’s normal vision. Outline and pattern discrimination is enhanced; when specifically looking for things or keeping watch, gain a +1 bonus to any relevant Notice check.

Enhanced Reflexes I
$100k | Nerve | Medical | Sys. Strain 2
Effect: Neural acceleration matrices can be deployed to briefly boost the user’s reaction speed. Once per scene, as an On Turn action, the user gets a bonus non-cyberspace Main Action.

Muscle Fiber Replacement I
$50k | Limb | Touch | Sys. Strain 1
Effect: Artificial muscle fibers are implanted as replacements for the user’s own flesh. The subject gains a Strength score of 14, or
+2 if already 14 or higher. (Base 14->16)
