You all settle into something resembling a routine over the next few days, glad for the change in pace from the hectic few days you have had since Bao broke you out of the Diktat holding cell on Idarete. While you spent the night at the Closest Moon, Martine was indeed able to create a logo everyone was happy with for the Makkuro.

On the fourth day of the Makkuro's repairs, a deliveryman drops off four large crates stamped with the name and logo of 'Elecom Workwear'. By chance everyone happens to be on the ship when they arrive, resting in-between shifts of the various odd jobs you have been working.

"Hey guys, come see what's arrived!" Marko shouts down the corridors of the upper deck, excitement in his voice. He heaves one of the crates up onto the mess hall table, having brought one of the crates up from the cargo hold. After a minute or so you all have congregated in the common area, stood around the crate.

OOC
Rolls will be resolved in the next scene.

"Damn, big-ass boxes. What are these, our new jumps?" Cass asks, spooning some microwave pasta into this mouth, finding it far from the quality of their home-cooked meal a few nights prior — though he doesn't mind much. After a long stretch of days on-board, and the engineer is glad for a break from his work on the Makkuro.

Hikaru bends over and looks at the label on the crates. With a smirk, he taps the top of one a few times. "Yup, looks like it. Can't wait to try on a hoodie," the pop star says, holding back the laughter as he remembers the additions added onto them. At least he'll be pleased with the t-shirts. Those are plain and all. He opens one of the boxes up, pulling out one of its contents.

Hikaru cracks open the crates revealing its contents to the group of you bunched around. Inside there are several piles of clothing; white t-shirts, black hoodies and black jumpsuits, all emblazoned with the logo designed by Martine. There is also an assortment of other matching, although less personalised, attire - work gloves, tool belts, boots and pants.

"Oh my logo turned out great," Martine says, her face lighting up with pride from seeing her creation realised. She reaches into the crate and pulls out one of the hoodies to take a closer look at it. As she does, the garment unfolds revealing a pair of ears on the hood and a tail extending from the bottom.

Cass nods vigorously at the gear as it comes out. "Yeah, killed it on the logo," he commends Martine. "Tool belt? Fuck yes. I left my good one back on Alldis."

As the hoodie unravels, revealing ears and a tail, the engineer's smile fades immediately. "What? Did you put that on all of them?" he asks, waiting cautiously as the rest of the garments are unpacked until his question is affirmed. He turns to Hikaru and Tess, shaking his head and raising his hands in a questioning manner. "C'mon, guys, I asked for one thing — no ears for me. Why did you do that?"

Hikaru offers a shrug, barely holding back a burst of laughter at Cass's overblown reaction to the feline additions. "Hey, you said no ears on the jumpsuits," the idol says, putting his hands up in feigned defense. "And the hoodies are basically just for lounging around anyways. Who's gonna wear a bulky sweater out on a mission?" He pulls out a hoodie of his own, smiling as he looks at the handiwork. Guy did a good job. Guess it was worth the money. We'll have to stop by and thank him in person sometime.

Looking at Martine, he flashes a smile and nods. "Yeah, your design turned out awesome. Feels like we're the real deal now." Manchild sides excluded. I've never seen a grown adult so upset over cat ears of all things. If he's worried about looking cool, he should know by know that it's way cooler to not give a fuck.

Tess' eyes widen in excitement as the crates come into view, and she can't hold in her excitement - both at the prospect of new attire, and at Cass' reaction. "Yes! They're finally here!" she exclaims, rushing over to the crate as Hikaru pops it open. She grabs one of the shirts, feeling the fabric and admiring the logo, before she sees Martine reach for one of the hoodies.

"It really is amazing!" she adds, as the others compliment her design. "All the other crews will be in awe, I'm sure," she continues, offering the woman a wide grin as she continues to admire their new apparel. Then, the moment she was waiting for arrives. Tess watches as the joy leaves Cass' face, and feels a little bit bad as she watches him look upset. However, she still can't help to feel some amusement from his annoyance.

"Hey, hey, it's gonna look real cute, just you watch," she responds, stepping over to him with a hoodie in tow. As she draws close, she starts to pull it over him, hoping he won't resist. He won't be able to keep that pouty face up for long once he has some cute cat ears on his head. No one can resist being cute.

Cass shakes his head at Hikaru's dismissive response. What an ass, he considers, before his attention is grabbed by Tess trying to pull the hoodie atop his head. "Hey, cut it out," he protests, evading to the side and out of her reach. "Way to disregard my input on that one, guys."

The engineer feels an uncomfortable chill from the tension, suddenly feeling embarrassed for having spoken up. Dammit. Maybe I should have just gone along with their stupid prank. But I dunno, shit's not funny. We paid good cred for these things, my wishes for how mine turn out should at least be respected. Is this how making decisions as a group is going to be?

Tess gives up as Cass steps aside of her attempt at dressing him, her smile fading as it is clear he is actually annoyed, and not simply bantering for fun. She frowns, letting her arms hang limp as he admonishes her and Hikaru for their decision.

"I thought you'd like it more once you saw it," she begins, in an attempt to explain away their actions. However, as she takes in his frustration, all she can feel is guilty for having caused it.

"Sorry," she continues, more quietly, before stepping over to the couch and taking a seat. She sets the hoodie in her lap, not knowing what else to say in the moment. I guess he really hated it after all.

Creed watched as the others pulled out their hoodies, wanting to speak up in unison about how good her art was, but couldn't find an opportunity as some tension erupted between Cass and Tess. After a moment of looking nearly fully frozen, he picked up a sweater and looked it over, holding it close as he quietly walked over to Martine. He offered a soft smile, whispering something to her, and then stepping over to Tess as well, and whispering something to her before quickly leaving the room, all the while looking very incredibly uncomfortable.
Martine
Eridas leaned in a little bit, while still giving her space to try and not make her as uncomfortable as he felt; "You did really good on the design. I appreciate the artwork you did." He said, giving her a soft smile before walking off.
Tess
Eridas approaches Tess and for a moment reaches out to pat her on the shoulder, but pulls his hand back instead. "I wanted to join in on the bit about the cat ears... but you and Hikaru really did do a good job picking out a design. I look forward to wearing this around the ship." He smiles, keeping his voice down, before very quickly walking off.

Hikaru lets out weighty sigh, keeping himself from rolling his eyes for once over the display of indignance. Kinda like going to the strip club disregarded my input, hm? But that was all fine and dandy and I didn't make a big deal about it. His brows furrow into annoyance and he tosses a hoodie at the childish engineer. "If you hate them so much, just cut them off then. They're just sewn on. Cheaper in fucking bulk anyways than requesting an odd one out." How the fuck can a grown-ass man get upset over fabric. FABRIC. Screams of insecurity.

Cass watches Tess with wordless exasperation, feeling extreme discomfort as she is visibly drained by his reaction. Why couldn't they just listen to me? Now I feel like a fucking asshole. He is caught unaware by Hikaru's toss, where it harmlessly catches him in the chest. He gingerly catches the hoodie as it begins to fall, taking a breath to emotionally steady himself as much as he can in the moment. "Yeah," the engineer says softly. "That's the plan."

Holding the hoodie, he sighs again, giving an apologetic look to the other crew as he steps out of the mess hall. What a disaster.

Cass heads to his quarters, locating his multi-tool and engaging it with an audible hum. With a practiced hand, he cleanly cuts the ears and tail off the hoodie before holding the garment up to inspect his work. Simple fix. Should have done that in the first place and just bit my tongue. It was just a stupid prank. No need to get my panties into a wad. He tosses the hoodie in a chair and lays on his bed, rubbing his eyes with his palms.

"Thanks," Tess responds to Creed with a weak smile, as he walks over to her and says his piece. What an unexpected moment. All of it, she thinks, as Hikaru and Cass go at it before her. She watches as Cass storms out of the room in anger, knowing that, even if he overreacted, they did cause his frustration. She can't help but to feel guilty for setting the entire scene into motion with their prank, as harmless as it might be, so she simply sits on the couch silently, thinking on everything and deciding what to do.

I have to go talk to him, she decides, after about a quarter hour has passed. Clear the air, apologize. We are about to go on a potentially dangerous mission together, the last thing we need is to be at each other's throats. She stands, not paying much attention to the others in the room, and trudges out of the gathering space as well, headed for Cass' room...

Cass & Tess
Cass spends several long minutes in quiet contemplation, laying on his bed and changing positions uncomfortably. He goes back and forth in his mind, regretting, and then justifying his reasons for speaking out. Fuck, I don't know. Why's this got me so riled up? I wish it were simpler like back in training school. Just grab a beer with whoever you fucked over, or were fucked over by, and write it off together.

He groans in frustration, still feeling a lack of closure on the mess hall scene that he abruptly walked away from. I should go talk to her. Hikaru can eat shit for now, though. He didn't seem eager to even consider the breach of my trust.

As the engineer stands up and stretches, he hears a knock on his door. "Yeah?" he calls out, curious who might be stopping by.

Tess pauses after he calls out, for a moment second-guessing her plan to speak with him. Is he still going to be mad? I have not seen him mad before, and I don't really want to deal with him if he is just going to lash out more. She briefly considers turning to leave, but decides to stick with her original decision, finally saying, "hey, it's me."

Cass' shoulders loosen. Tess, he realizes. Stepping over to the door of his quarters, he opens it to find her standing before him. "Hey," he says softly, trying to get a read on her, while simultaneously attempting to sum up his thoughts. Fuck, wasn't ready yet.

"Hey," she repeats, before realizing she'd already said it. I suppose neither of us are fully ready to talk, she thinks, as she notices his body language in the moment.

"I just wanted to come talk. Can I come in?" she asks, looking at him with a mixture of guilt and concern on her face. "I don't really wanna do it in front of the others again," she clarifies, realizing that she is standing before a man who - despite his recent frustration - has repeatedly shown interest in her looks. Let's hope he's calmed down since he stormed off. If we end up yelling, then what was even the point?

Cass stares at her blankly for a second, standing in the doorway, before he blinks and takes a step back. "Um, yeah, yeah, absolutely," he says, gesturing inside. "Just, uh, ignore all the shit. I wasn't expecting anyone else in here right now."

He picks up a jacket from the ground, tossing it into the corner and moves a waste bin that he had accidentally knocked over earlier. He pulls his chair out for her to take a seat, sitting opposite from it on his bed — straightening the sheets as best he can as he does. Still consolidating his thoughts, he waits quietly for her to take the lead.

Tess steps in, trying not to smirk as Cass awkwardly rearranges the junk lying around his room. If only he'd seen some of the places I've lived when I was younger, he'd realize how little this fazes me. But it's not the time for teasing, she reminds herself, focusing instead on the reason she came. She steps in after him, taking the seat and crossing her legs in front of her.

"I guess, mostly, I just wanted to apologize," she begins, as he takes his own seat and looks towards her expectantly. "I knew you asked for no cutesy stuff, and I gave it to you anyway. I thought it would be a light-hearted prank, but I can see that it really got to you, and I-" she pauses, looking down in her lap. Am I really going to say this out loud? And to Cass, of all of them? She takes a deep breath before speaking again.

"I think a lot of you - all of you - and it hurts to know I hurt you. Y'know?" she continues, before looking back up. "I don't have a lot of people in my life I feel safe with, or that I can rely on, so seeing how upset you got felt really bad. And I'm sorry."

Cass listens quietly, nodding but keeping eye contact. His heart sinks as she admits the emotional pain that his outburst had caused, and he shifts uncomfortably, the bare truth of her words ringing dizzyingly familiar to his recent thoughts.

He steadies himself with a deep breath, nodding again as he does. "I... Thank you," he says.

"And I want to say that I understand you completely, the relying-on bit. Before all of this, before getting thrown in a Diktat cell and ending up with this crew... this, what, team? Family, even? I had nobody to trust. Every single person I had ever trusted before, I had to leave behind back in Alldis. So what we've built here, the four of us, it..." Cass trails off, shaking his head. "It's all I have. You are all I have."

"I've spent the last couple years being taught the same damn lesson: Don't. Fucking. Trust. Anybody. And when you came along — you and the others — that lesson stayed true, up until it didn't. It's been a trip, the last week. I thought I blocked all this shit out of my brain, caring about anyone except my own needs and survival. But I opened up, let you in, even if I didn't realize it. And even though we've almost died like, five times over at this point, it's the most safe and in-control I've felt in a long, long time."

He sighs, looking down on the bed — the product of his shame sitting next to him, missing ears and a tail. "That's why I blew up. It's stupid — it's just a prank, like you said. It shouldn't have been a big deal. But it is, to me, because I'm dealing with a lot of shit, and I need trust. Even on something as trivial as a hoodie. I have to start from the ground up on all this." Cass meets her eyes again. "I'm sorry, too."

Tess listens intently as Cass opens up much more than she had anticipated. A frown forms on her face without her realizing as he describes his life, and as she realizes how eerily similar his time before they met sounds to her own. Hikaru must be the only one not dealing with a giant pile of trauma, she thinks, as he lays bare his insecurities and his need for trust, and she nods along in understanding.

"Oh," she says, as he apologies too, something she had not come in hoping for or expecting. "Thanks," she manages, offering a weak smile in place of the frown that had been plastered across her face as he spoke. "It sounds like you have been having a hard time too. I never realized how much of the same stuff we had to deal with," she continues, not sure how much more she wants to open up to the man, but finding herself feeling like there is no better time to do so than in this moment.

"I know what it's like, feeling so alone before we all met up. I had Hikaru, sure, but this is the most time we've spent together in a long time, and there was not much else in my life besides him and my sister. I was in Idarete alone and... for a job. If we didn't meet Bao and end up working together, I'd likely be back on Strocho right now, continuing a job I hate and that I was forced into, with only some trinkets and a satisfied libido to show for it. I... never really realized how hollow my life had become until I met you all, and finally gained some freedom in it again. And I certainly don't want to lose that connection over some silly cat ears."

Glancing to the mangled hoodie besides him, she finds herself smiling more genuinely again, the catharsis of the conversation allowing her to feel more playful again. "I do still want to see you in a whole one, though. I think it would be cute." She pauses, before quickly adding, "not that I am asking you to. I will just have to photoshop one onto you," she continues, before holding up her compad to take a quick pic, offering a playful smirk.

Cass finds himself listening again, understanding the chore of a less-than-desired grind — one that only leaves you feeling bitter and hollow and lonely. He is heartened, somewhat, hearing Tess admit the connection they've shared is mutual, and that she finds a similar freedom in it. She's hardly ever serious. I didn't realize she gave that much of a shit about me or what we have here.

"If I didn't meet Bao and end up on this ship, I'd be back on the street of Idarete, but this time without work and without help. So I have to agree. Cat ears or not, I think most, if not all of us, really need this to work."

He gives a soft, tired smile as she brings up her compad. "I look like shit," he admits, though he realizes she probably doesn't care. "If you really want to see me in one, I'll put one on. I guess I don't really care much one way or another at this point. I'm just happy to have a crew to share a uniform with in the first place."

"I'd be back doing-" Tess begins in response to Cass' admission, though she stops herself before she says more. "Well, I'd be doing a job I am not proud of. It certainly isn't bringing any good into the world," she continues, choosing to hint at her work instead of fully opening up about it. Just go on thinking I dance and sleep around for money, I don't want to know what you or the others would think if you knew the rest.

She is just about to snap her picture when he responds that he will put on the hoodie. He doesn't have to. And I know he doesn't want to. What changed his mind? This conversation? "Are you sure?" she asks, looking to him with a mixture of joy and confusion. "You don't have to. We can take a pic together in them, though, if you don't want to do it alone."

"You were surviving," Cass assures her. "That's reason enough to do it." As she pauses, asking him about the hoodie, he shrugs. "I mean, it's not my thing, dressing up and doing costumes. I've always — even before — been one to try and blend in, not stand out. Don't want to be the nail that gets hammered into line, and all."

"But I'll do it for you," he says, a smile forming again. Because I like you. "Because why not? Something tells me this captain's more likely to ream me for not wearing a kitschy hoodie on-deck than wearing it."

I was killing people, but I appreciate you trying to cheer me up, she thinks, as the man's words of support fail to really offer her the comfort that he'd likely hoped for. However, his willingness to try the hoodie, however reluctant it might be, does serve to do what his words of support didn't. She smiles, this time genuinely, chuckling at it his comment about Hikaru. I can't even imagine him trying to be a hardass, but it sounds funny to watch.

"Ok then," she says warmly, still wearing her smile. "Stay there," she continues, before quickly standing and leaving his room, returning a few moments later with two of the hoodies in her arms...

Some moments pass, and Tess returns to the room, seeming much happier than she had when she left. She doesn't speak to anyone, instead making a beeline for the box and grabbing one of the hoodies, before making her way to the spot on the couch she'd been sitting at and retrieving the one she'd left there as well. Don't mind me, just breaking barriers here, she thinks to herself, as she quickly makes her way back to Cass' room...
Cass & Tess cont.
"Here," Tess says, handing one of the hoodies to Cass before pulling the other over herself. While the size for Cass is pretty accurate to his body, maybe somewhat baggy in parts, on Tess it is very clearly too large. She waits for him to put his own on before stepping over to the bed, motioning for him to move to the side. "Scooch over," she says, eager to sit down and take the picture while he is still receptive to it.

Cass waits anxiously as Tess leaves his quarters. With his vulnerabilities exposed throughout their discussion, combined with her sudden departure, he feels suddenly alone and bare. Thankfully she returns shortly with a replacement hoodie. He scooches over on his bed, pulling the garment over his head. "At least it's cozy," he says, admiring the feel if not the adornments. When she sits down beside him for the picture, he leans in and puts an arm around her waist in a casual manner, looking up into her compad. He gives a genuine, if tired, smile and says, "cheese!"

"Yes, it's so much comfier than the old ones," Tess responds, eager to finally have comfortable clothing to wear on the ship. She is surprised when he chooses to put his arm around her waist, but she decides to lean into it for the picture, moving closer to him so that their heads are right next to one another. She then moves her hand around his back and onto his far shoulder, mirroring his own. With the other hand, she holds her phone out before them, giving a wide toothy green as she taps the screen to take the shot. She then takes several more, slightly changing her pose, as well as her facial expression, in each one.

After the pictures are taken, she removes her hand from Cass' shoulder and instead uses it to pull up the freshly-snapped selfies. She holds her compad out so he can see as well, before she begins scrolling through them to admire them. "They turned out great!" she says, clearly happy with them as she moves from one to another. "You want them too? I can send them to your pad if you like," she says, facing him to await his response. With the way he is holding me, I can only imagine he'll want these for his own too.

With Tess drawing in closer than she had before, Cass can't help but feel his cheeks go warm as he smiles for her picture. Oh, more than one, he realizes, trying to keep up with her rapid posing. As she brings up the selfies, his hand on her waist lingers as they browse the pictures together. "Yeah, I'll take them," he says, finally taking his hand back and scooching over a bit to face her. "Thanks. It'll be good to have something on here other than pictures of serial numbers from spare parts." He smiles warmly, enjoying the moment after an emotionally fraught hour.

Tess returns the man's smile, glad that a situation that started so poorly was now another pleasant exchange with someone she'd grown even closer to after their conversation. She swipes her hand across the screen of the pad, sending the photos to Cass'. She then yawns and stretches her arms, turning and laying down after, placing her legs across the man's lap. "They're cute pics," she says, before she registers that she'd just laid down on someone else's bed. "Oh, I hope you don't mind if I lay here a sec. I'm still a bit tired from work."

Cass tenses up as she kicks her feet up onto his lap. Goddamn, unless I am reading every single signal wrong, then she seems into me. She's one of the biggest teases I've ever met, but I don't think she'd do something this forward unless there was more to it, he considers. Right? The second-guessing and anxiety gives him a brief moment of feeling dazed.

He decides to lean in, draping an arm across her shin, getting comfortable himself. He lays back against the wall his bunk is propped against so that the two of them are perpendicular to each other. "Not at all. In fact, this is kinda nice," the engineer admits, his warm smile now cheek to cheek as he can't help but feel giddy.

"You're," he starts, but pauses, reframing the words he wants to say. One way or another, I need to know.

"I'm into you. That's probably obvious, right?"

Tess raises an eyebrow as Cass places his arm on her legs, but, like him, she finds the moment relaxing and chooses to simply enjoy it. She listens as he speaks, as the words she had not expected to escape his lips come out. She looks up at him, and there is a pause for a moment after he speaks. Oh wow, he really said it. I was beginning to think he'd just keep ogling me forever and never say anything. The pause us broken by her laughter, which comes involuntarily as she thinks about the moment and everything leading up to it.

"Yes, it's pretty obvious," Tess responds, this time in her usual snarky manner. "But," she begins, sitting up more, using her arms to prop her more upright as her legs remain in his lap. "It's not unwelcome," she continues, her tone back to the softer one she'd had before, as she resists her impulse to wink at him as she typically does. Now will you actually make a move, or are words all you're good for, she thinks, as she maintains her position looking up at him.

Cass tenses up when Tess' snarky tone engages, but he lets out an involuntary single laugh when she admits it is at least somewhat mutual. Theory confirmed I guess, he considers, a great relief washing over him — being instead filled with a fluttering high of requited attraction. "I'm feeling pretty wiped, too. Long day of repairs and all. You, uh, wanna watch a movie? I've got a few saved on my compad."

Tess can't help but to feel a little disappointed when Cass simply asks to watch a movie, but she smiles and nods at his suggestion. "Sure," she says, moving over so that there is room next to her on the bed. She pats the spot beside her, saying, "come closer, then we can both see." Do I really have to be the more forward one here? Maybe he's never been with a woman before. Or maybe he's just being shy.

Cass quickly flips on a movie from his compad to the screen opposite his bed — hardly even checking what it is. Tornado Titans? Sure, fuck it. Sliding over, he puts his arm around her. After the intro sequence begins, he turns to face Tess, going in for a kiss if she meets his gaze.

Oh, he is going for it after all, Tess thinks, pleased with the turn of events as the absurd movie begins to play. She grins as he moves in, wrapping her arms around his head to accept the kiss. She takes his compad to turn the volume up, the sound of the film serving to drown out the activities to come...

Earlier That Day - Cass & Kate
It is the forth day of the Makkuro's stint in the Asteria docks undergoing repairs, when the two of you find yourselves on an EVA together repairing one of the more damaged plates of the ship's outer hull. This marks the first time the two of you have spend time along, having only made small amounts of small talk outside of the work team briefings on the repairs. However you have both been impressed by the other's work so far.

You use your EVA thrusters to manoeuvre into place, on either side of the damaged plate, where you lock yourselves into position on the hull using your mag boots and gloves, ready to begin cutting the damaged section of the ship's hull so that it can be replaced with new armour plating.

"Anywhere specific you want me to get, or skip over?" Kate asks as she locks onto the side, mentally mapping out the damage and reaching for her cutter, checking it briefly to make sure its all in working order.

Cass shifts a meter over, surveying the hull. Think I'm right outside my quarters, he considers. Good thing I wasn't in my bunk during that last scrap. He almost misses Kate's question, and it takes him a moment to realize she had spoken over the comms. "Oh, nah. I trust your judgment." The engineer spots a stretch of warped plating, flagging it with his meta-tool as he decides how much or little to cut away.

As he works, he finds himself getting into a quiet groove — one that isn't common among gearheads, where oftentimes different opinions or schools of thought collide on a regular basis. After a moment of further flagging and cutting, he takes a moment to stretch.

"So, you been on Asteria long?" Cass asks, curious why someone of her talent would end up on a place like this. Seems wasted talent to be out here. I'm sure the League or hell, the Diktat, would have her on payroll if they could.

Copy that is the first thing Kate thinks, before she catches herself and just nods, saying "Sure thing."

She falls into a similar groove, the repeated motions of mark and cut setting her into an almost meditative state, He's good, real good. Professional, maybe even military trained good. I wonder where he learned. she muses to herself. She half-registers Cass' question, before remembering that no one else is around to ask, and she snaps out of her reverie. She looks in his direction, and seeing him taking a light break she follows suit.

"Mm, I've been in the system a while, but Asteria specifically? Not as long as it's felt, I'm sure." She says, watching his reaction. "You?"

Cass grunts a laugh, his suspicions seemingly confirmed. "Almost a week, now," he admits. "How's it treated you so far? I figured you and the rest of the repair crew might catch shit from the dockloaders. One of the strikers saw my tools and told me to fuck off, scab — guess I don't look like a co-owner of my own tub here, huh." He laughs again, finding the whole situation bizarre. Guess I am sort of a scab, running missions and intel for Holland herself. Still, I've got no dog in this fight. Power to them, but we've got a maintenance bill the price of an Alldis pleasure condo that no union's going to bail us out on.

"It's not so bad. We have taken some flak, which is to be expected, but nobody's gotten hurt over it. I feel for them though, better pay or conditions, y'know, and the only way to get those is the leverage of collective action. Too bad some of us still have bills to pay, right?" Kate replies, a slight smile in her voice. "Speaking of, though, where'd you find her," Kate asks, knocking lightly on the hull, "She's in real good condition, considering." She gestures at the remaining damage on the plate. Like, damn good, and not just well maintained. This has some serious tech on it.

"Bills to pay, right," Cass echoes, wagging a closed fist up and down — standard EVA body language for agreement. "It's different when you're trying to feed a beast like the Makkuro."

He frowns at Kate's question, though hardly blames her curiosity. She's had to have seen the Furious Midnight logos everywhere, and it's not exactly a surprise our transponder needs a replacement. Still, he isn't going to simply admit their methods of less-than-legal acquisition. "She's Idaretian make, originally. Long story," the engineer answers carefully. "You seem to know your way around a military vessel, though, seeing you work. Let me guess, Navy?"

Kate rests a hand on the ship, "Yeah, they're hungry alright, but if you treat them right they'll treat you right." she says.

Then, her smile freezes as she tenses, caught off guard, Shit, is it that obvious? I guess to someone that knows what to look for. He's already basically told on himself that he's League, now I gotta figure out if he's current or former. She pauses for a second before responding. "It was long time ago," she says carefully, "I guess old habits are hard to break, huh? I noticed some similarities in you too."

Cass loosens up a bit in his vacc suit. "Always easy to spot another sailor," he says, somewhat smugly. "Long time ago for me, too. How'd you put it? Not as long as it's felt."

He pauses, an epiphany occurring to him. Creed's rubbing shoulders with the dock gangs. Why shouldn't I do the same with the gearheads? Sitting the comms desk and taking lead on engineering makes my head hurt. I'd be a fool if I wasn't out here looking for somebody to fill one of those seats.

"So, level with me, since the way I see it, technically we share an employer. What's it like, working for this corp long-term? You, um, happy out here?"

Kate chuckles at her own phrase being turned back on her, and some of the tension drains from her shoulders. OK, former. I wonder what caused him to leave, but that's his business.

"On the level? I've been flying with a crew, on the Finity's End, for the past year or so, and that work hasn't been bad. But, this last job..." she trails off for a second, collecting her thoughts. "Long story short, it's been about a month now, dockside. And it's been shit. I took on some work as a temp gig, but with the strike on, and no word from my crew, I'm itching to get back out." She half reaches for where she normally keeps her smokes on her belt, before catching herself, Can't smoke in an EVA, genius.

"You uh, haven't heard of them, have you?"

Cass places his arm parallel to the ship and makes a knocking motion, the EVA equivalent of a shake of the head. "Finity's End? Sorry, doesn't ring any bells for me. What were they up to when you lost contact?" he asks. That sounds like hell. Like if Hikaru and the others took off and left me here, stuck on this shithole mining station. I wonder how she got split up with them? Ditching your mechanic isn't exactly a winning strategy in the long run.

Kate sighs, "Didn't think so." She wavers her free hand back and forth, equivalent to an uncertain shrug. "They couldn't update me much on the job itself, client wanted it hush hush, but they were projected back two or so weeks ago. Our techie was keeping me updated on the ship, but he went dark about, a week or so in?"

She pauses again, weighing how much she should share, I did just meet him. But, he at least seems to get it, being with his own crew.

"The whole situation is kinda fucked, thinking back on it. And not just being left behind, the whole deal feels off."

Cass frowns as he pictures the loose timeline Kate is piecing together. Red flags are red flags. Two weeks is a lot of time to overshoot, especially without sort of contact.

"Yeah..." he manages to respond, wondering what could have happened. His discomfort grows further as he considers the pirates plaguing the outpost, and the murdered mining crew they had come across while putting them down. Was her crew part of all that shit?

"Was the job something that Asteria Corp was offering? Or further out in the system?"

"Might have been, might have been a front. I dunno, all I've got is speculation at this point. The readings I was getting didn't look like a jump, so it shouldn't have been too far, but I don't know." She offers an apologetic gesture. "Sorry for putting all that on you right after we met. You asked if I was happy here? No, I'm not. Why, you offering a way off?"

"I, uh," Cass begins to stammer, taken off-guard by the harrowing thoughts and sudden transition. He straightens his posture, regrouping. "Yes — if you're looking for one. Being perfectly honest, we've been stretched thin and we're only here long enough for the 3 Rs: repair, refuel, and recruit. Can't promise you that it won't be a bumpy ride, though. There's a lot of shit going on out there in the system."

He pauses a moment. "And look, I'm not sure what happened to your crew, but we can keep an ear out for them too. Maybe do some digging too, if we get a chance."

Kate listens, worried slightly that her sudden refocus was too jarring, but is reassured by the other gearhead's recovery. "If you'd have me, and the rest of your crew agrees to it." She says, "And besides, I'd take bumpy over being stuck here. A sailor's not meant to stay dockside too long, yeah?"

"And thanks. I," her voice falters for a beat, "I would appreciate that. It's a bit of a big 'if', I'd guess, but I figure there's better odds out there than in here."

"I'll vouch for you," Cass assures her. "I don't think they'd have a problem with it. There's no disagreement that we need an engineer, and you're overqualified to be painting rockhaulers out here." He suddenly realizes their comms might be monitored, seeing as how they're both working under Asteria Corp's banner at the moment. "And don't mention it. But look, let me buy you a drink if you can find us a better place on this station to talk shop." He uses a thick glove to tap his vacc suit helm near his ear, indicating the comms feed. Don't think Holland would be too keen if we were poaching her people. Still, that's just the game.

Kate flushes slightly at his comment, Well, he's not wrong, this is a step or few down from the things I've worked on before. "Very kind of you to say," she says politely, to keep the blush from affecting her tone too much.

She sees him motion to the comms, and clocks his meaning, Right, even if they're not actively listening right now, they might be, or might later. Better to not take the chance. She touches a finger to her faceplate, a sign of understanding. "Sounds good to me. Think we can get the rest of this section pretty quick, or you want to take lunch and come back to it? I know a place that should be pretty quiet around this time.", she asks as she looks over the section of hull they were working on.

"No sense in a rush-job on an empty stomach. Besides, we've still got days of repairs left to pace ourselves for," Cass reasons. "Let's call it for now, yeah?" He disengages his metatool, waiting for Kate before heading toward the airlock. Seems like a mutual victory here — she gets her way off this station, and we get a full-time mechanic. At least until we can find her crew.

"I hear that. And besides, I could use a break from the suit." Kate checks her metatool again, noting its current condition, before fully disengaging it. She then follows Cass to the airlock. "Meet you outside, and we'll head that way together?" She asks as they near the bulkhead, bracing herself against the wall.

You glide back towards the airlock and climb inside. It cycles and a few moments later you step back on the station, taking your helmets off as you do. After climbing out of your vacc suits Kate leads you towards the Engine Room, dodging shipyard workers moving components and parts around as you do. It is a short walk and you find yourselves at your destination only a couple of minutes later. The bar is located just off the main drag of the shipyard area, a narrow building nestled between a warehouse and the office of a small shipping company.

You step inside, passing under the model engine bell that hangs above the entrance. The Engine Room is indeed quiet, with only two other patrons, sharing a drink in one of the booths that line the left wall of the bar, and the lone barman tending the bar that runs the length of room opposite the booths. The bartender, a young man in his early to mid twenties, gives you a nod in greeting as you step inside. Kate recognises him as being called José from the handful of other times she has frequented the bar.

Kate waves at José as they walk in, before looking at Cass, "Booth or the bar? I'm more for the latter, myself, but usually it's just me." Booth might be more discrete though, fewer potential eyes or ears. But, it's not like we're going to do anything illegal, we're just talking about work. She thinks as the door closes behind them.

Cass follows Kate's lead as she leads the way to the Engine Room, doing his best to blend in with the dockworkers, striking or otherwise. When they arrive, he is reassured, finding only the pair of other patrons. "Booth," he decides. More privacy that way. "What's your poison?"

"Sounds good to me, one towards the back?" she asks. "And I'll leave it to dealer's choice. You?" She starts walking slowly down the line of booths.

Cass grunts an agreement. "Anything but whiskey," he says, having had enough of it for a while. "I'll be over soon." He heads to the bar, nodding to the young man behind it. "Hey. Can I get two beers? Whatever's on tap."

"For sure," Kate says as she walks ahead. She picks a booth close to the back wall, and sits facing the door.

"Gotcha," the bartender replies to Cass, picking up two glasses and stepping over to one of the taps behind the bar. "It's a local beer, brewed on station. It's actually pretty good," he explains as he fills the two glasses and places them on the bar in front of Cass. "That'll be four credits," he says looking at the man expectantly.

It's actually pretty good, Cass repeats to himself, smirking at the curious pitch from the bartender. Guess I won't ask about the rest of them."Local? Sweet. Thanks." He taps on his compad, paying for the drinks before picking them up and heading toward the booth Kate's found. Setting one on the table before her, he sits down and takes a swig of his own.

"So, first off, thanks for meeting like this. Just felt weird, yeah? Being on a job and talking about a new one. Didn't want to give our employer any reason to pull a stunt."

"I hadn't even thought about it, honestly, but it's a good point." Kate replies after taking a sip of her beer. "Those in power like using anything they can get against you, and all that." She takes another sip, "What did you get us?"

"No idea, something local that was on tap," Cass answers, almost having forgot already. Not here for the booze, I'm here to settle something.

He looks around, speaking quietly and calmly. "So, second reason I wanted to be off comms, is, well, in case you haven't noticed, the Makkuro's got some of her own problems. Don't get me wrong — the offer is there. If you want a way off this shithole and a new job, it's yours. But I didn't want to bring you on without giving you a heads up."

The engineer sighs, questioning how much he feels comfortable letting on. "Unless you've put your head in the sand for the last few years, you've gotta be well aware that there's open war out there, between the Diktat and the League. Right?"

Kate nods, focusing up and leaning in a bit to listen. No kidding, with this schedule for repairs, and a paint job? Bet her problems are more than just physical.

Her jaw tenses at the mention of the war, Acutely. But, we don't need to say that immediately. What's the catch here? She quickly unclenches it and nods once, "Mhm, I haven't been watching it close, but it'd be hard to miss."

"It's been impossible to miss, for us. We've had a couple choice run-ins with both sides," Cass admits, choosing his words wisely. "Out of respect for the rest of my crew, I can't give you exact details, but let's just say we've burned a few bridges in this system due to no other choices."

He takes another sip of his beer, looking past Kate as his eyes focus in the distance. "As long as we mind our own business and look for typical merc work, we should keep under the radar, especially if we make for another system. Still, if you want more info, you can come by after-hours once my crew's back and we can chat with them around."

Kate takes a long drink as she listens, nodding along. Hah, burned. She thinks as the scar on her face tingles, Yeah, I could say the same.

As Cass eyes shift focus, she gently rubs at her face to try and stop the tingling, before responding. "Working independant, I can imagine how hard it would be to not run afoul of one or both of them."

She pauses for a breath. "And honestly, keeping my head down and under the radar sounds like exactly what I'm looking for, work wise."

"I don't know how much more info I need, specifically," She adds, "But meeting everyone before we finalize isn't a bad idea. What time do you think they'll be back by?"

Cass lets out a soft phew, thankful that the gearhead appears to be understanding about their tenuous position among the intersystem superpowers. As long as she isn't running to turn us in, I don't care. They can fight their bullshit war while the rest of us try and survive.

"Yeah, no kidding," he says in agreement. "And I'd call it 2000 hours. That work for you?"

Kate lets out a breath too, relaxing her shoulders that she hadn't realized had tensed up. I must have hit the jackpot with this lead. Truly independent from what I can tell, and they seem like decent folks to boot.

She nods in response, Roger wilco echoing in the back of her head while she says, "Sure thing, I haven't got any plans this evening."

“Sounds like a plan,” Cass confirms, taking a longer pull from his beer. “Alright, well, we should probably finish up so we can get back to our current job, yeah?” He chuckles.
Kate
After your drink both of you head back to the ship and you finish up the last few hours of work. Afterwards you head back to the small room in a flop house you have been calling home the past couple of weeks, where you wait for the time to come to head back to the ship.

Later that evening you arrive at back at the Makkuro on time, finding the area around the airlock devoid of activity. You step up to the controls and find a button to alert the crew inside to your presence. A few moments later a young women with long black hair appears on the other side of the glass window built into the heavy airlock door. She is dressed in a black jumpsuit with the words Makkuro printed on it next to a small logo of a black cat.

"Um hi?" she asks through the system's speaker, clearly not expecting you. You explain your meeting with Cass and its outcome, which seems to persuade the woman.

"Okay then... Um follow me I guess," the woman says, unlocking the airlock door and opening it allowing you to step inside. She starts to lead you through the corridors of the ship, pulling out her compad as she does and appearing to send a message to someone as she walks.

She leads you into a central main room containing lockers and an elevator, but keeps walking - turning into another corridor before immediately taking one of a pair of staircases that branch from either side of the corridor. Following her upstairs, you find your self in what is clearly the ship's mess hall. A kitchen area takes up one corner of the room, with a large L-shaped couch in another, while two large tables sit in the centre of the room.

"The others should be here any minute," the woman says, taking a seat on the couch. "I'm Martine by the way."
About an hour or so after the emotional unboxing of the new uniforms everyone has retired to their rooms - or those of others - when your compads light up with a text from Martine.

"If we could all reconvene in the mess again. There's a woman here for some sort of job interview Cass?!?" It says.

Everyone that makes their way back to the mess hall enters to find Martine, wearing one of the new jumpsuits, and another woman making small talk. The woman has long pale hair and is dressed like many of the engineers and contractors you've seen around the docks the last few days.

Having fallen asleep wrapped around Tess during the thrilling second act of Tornado Titans on his vid-deck, Cass wearily bats at his compad when it buzzes. Not on the intercom, not important. When it buzzes a second time, he groans and decides to crack an eye open to skim the contents of whatever text he got.

Shit, shit, shit, Cass thinks as he jolts himself awake, sitting up next to Tess. I can't believe I forgot. What an asshole move. Kate's going to think we don't have our shit together. Though I guess we kind of don't.

He rapidly sends out a text by voice while sliding out of his cot, pulling on a jumpsuit and doing his best to clean himself up. "Fuck sorry yeah that is Kate a new engineer candidate who is on Holland's workforce she seemed like a good fit to hire on and I wanted her to drop by to make sure you all agree too be down there in a snap."

"Hey," Cass says, smiling softly at Tess as he stands next to her, strapping up his boots. "I'll, um, let's catch up after this meeting, yeah? I'd like to see where your head's at."

As Cass and Tess finish up their cardio routine, she notices that he slowly dozes off in the bed next to her. She chuckles lightly to herself at the realization, but chooses to stay in the bed, not wanting to leave the warmth of finally having someone near her again. Instead, she decides to pause the film they'd not been watching, and instead reaches for her compad and begins scrolling through old pictures on her phone. She looks through dozens if not hundreds, from fun nights out at a club, to times she hung with Hikaru and his band, even back to her less proud days of her early recovery.

Eventually, she reaches a bunch of old pictures of her siblings and her mom. She scrolls through them with a smile on her face, feeling nostalgic for her family life for the first time in a long time. She stops as she reach one of Emina and tears begin to well in her eyes. The tears turn to full-on crying, and she tries her best to keep it quiet so not to awaken Cass from his nap. What am I doing to myself? This evening has been emotional overload already, and here I am looking at pictures of my dead sister.

Tess' emotions are interrupted by the mass text that she receives to her compad, and she looks at in surprise, her eyes still wet and red from before. She does her best to calm herself, glad for Cass' groggy response to the first text, and by the time it comes a second time she is fortunately much more calm. Once he stands, she sits on the bed, yawning and stretching some as he uses voice-to-text to respond to Martine. She slowly stands as well, grabbing the larger of the two hoodies and pulling it over her. Seeing it is long enough to nearly reach her knees, she chooses to leave it at that.

"Sure," she responds to Cass, offering him a weak smile as he all but asks to see her again. "I'll see you out there," she responds with a wink, before leaving his room and stepping across the hall into the bathroom. She washes her face of the dried tears and sweat, before finding her way back into the mess hall. As she has done now countless times before, she takes her place at her favorite spot on the couch, curling up and making sure that her new hoodie is properly bunched up in her lap.

"Hey," she says to Martine and the other woman as she arrives, eyeing the newcomer curiously. She must be skilled if Cass thought she'd be a good fit. Let's hope she gets along with everyone. Last thing we need is more drama today, she thinks, sharply exhaling in amusement at the last thought.

As Creed found himself walking further and further away from the hall, he felt his emotional state quickly deteriorate. He began to hyperventilate, approaching his door and hastily attempting to open it- missing the button the first few times as he began to panic, just desperately needing to be away from others. The door closes behind him and he barely manages to coherently lock it as he falls to his knees, tears beginning to fall as memories from years ago that he had repressed began flooding back to the surface. Weakly he falls to his side, curling up in a ball on the floor as he cried himself into a troubled slumber.

*Brrzt. Brrzt.* What? *Brrzt. Brrzt.* Creed stirred himself to consciousness, looking around in a panic before remembering where he was. *Brrzt. Brrzt.* "Oh." He said quietly, pulling his compad out to read the messages- "Woman... Cass... Interview... Mess hall..." He read slowly, nodded, standing up and carefully trying to rub his eyes as he looked over at the forgotten sweater, reaching out to pick it up before quickly pulling his hand back. "M...maybe later, I guess." He says with a sigh. He steps out and heads to the washroom to check his face. That's not a good look, Creed. Pull yourself together. They don't need to see that. He winces, tears welling up again before he shakes his head, trying to get over himself. He splashes water on his face and tries to wake up, shaking off the last vestiges of slumber.
After a moment of staring at himself in the mirror, he takes a deep breath and heads down to the mess hall, running a hand through his hair as he sits down at the table, tugging lightly on the sleeves of his shirt. Realizing after a moment that he was entirely ignoring Martine and the newcomer, he looks up suddenly, taking a deep breath, he waves at Martine and the new girl.
"H-hello." He said softly, forcing a smile.

"Nice to meet you." Kate smiles politely at the other woman. "You have a very nice ship, she's in great condition."

She shifts her weight as she stands slightly awkwardly, hands resting at her side as she looks around the room while the rest of the crew filter in. She gives a small wave and a polite smile and "Hello." to each person as they come in, taking note of their faces. I'll wait for everyone to be here before starting introductions, no real sense in repeating myself however many times.

The thought had started when Martine had greeted her as if she were unexpected, Did Cass forget to say something about me?, grew when she saw the second woman enter in just a sweater, and started to crystallize when she saw the man she didn't recognize enter looking like he had just put himself back together: Something must have happened, between when we finished for the day and now.

Cass steps confidently into the mess hall wearing a fresh jumpsuit, despite his face and hair looking slightly disheveled. When he sees Kate he raises a hand to greet her. "Hey, welcome," he manages, making his way to a counter and leaning against it. "Here, feel free to grab a chair and get comfortable."

"Sorry for the lack of a red carpet," the engineer says apologetically to Kate, though he peers around at the others to mean it toward them as well. "It's been a pretty weird day for us, and we uh, had some challenging subjects to discuss earlier. But I'm glad you're here. I think we really need somebody with your expertise, and it sounds like this is a good fit for you too."

Cass turns to the rest of the crew. "Guys, this is Kate. You wanna, maybe introduce yourself?" He pauses, looking around for Hikaru. Where's Glitter? He's gotta be better at this shit than me. "Maybe, uh, say a little bit about yourself and what sort of role you play on our fine tub, here?"

"Nice to meet you, Kate," Tess responds, trying her best to look friendly and cordial, knowing full well that she is not dressed for the occasion. I could've put more on, but honestly she is gonna see me like this a lot if she joins up, so might as well see how she handles it now, she thinks, smiring slightly at the thought. She's kinda cute though. Nice tats, cool hair. I wonder how she got that huge scar? Must have been pretty painful.

"I can go first, I guess," she continues, as Cass suggests introductions. "I'm Tess. I guess the main thing I do is tease the others, but, officially, I run the gun crew. Which for now is just a couple of us, and ideally my station won't be needed most of the time," she continues offering a shrug. Saying it out loud, it sounds so much more official than what we've actually been doing. What am I supposed to say, that I am gunnery sergeant or some shit? She chuckles briefly at the thought before continuing.

"What else?" she asks, looking upwards and placing a finger on her chin in mock thought. In a much more bubbly voice, she continues, "I like long walks on the beach, dog parks, and upbeat music. I'm a gemini, but don't hold it against me. I am always looking for more interesting fashion to add to my wardrobe, and I'm not afraid to be eclectic to stand out. Favorite color is red. Favorite food is a strawberry daiquiri. Oh, and I am a huge fangirl for NTER5TELLAR, don't even get me started," she finishes, unable to hold in her laughter with the last words. I hope I did his fanbase justice, she thinks, as she wipes a tear from her eye from the laughter.

"What about you?" she asks with a grin, as she finally calms down. She leans forward slightly in her seat as she gazes towards Kate again, awaiting her reply.

Hikaru blinks for a few seconds, reading the texts as the realization sets in. He has the maturity to arrange an interview with a new crewmate but cat ears elicited that response? Guess it's good she didn't show up earlier... He shrugs, giving Marko a quick glance and a shrug. Stretching his limbs after a short movie session in his quarters, he lets out a yawn before stepping into the mess hall, wearing a new jumpsuit and hoodie.

Catching sight of the strange woman, Hikaru stares for a moment, eyes moving between Martine and the rest of the crew. This gaze focuses for a moment on Cass's messy hair and rough appearance, and Tess, unsurprisingly scantily-clad, but wearing a hoodie much too big for her. The wires connect and he suppresses a sigh. Guess she could do worse. Maybe they'll both mellow the fuck out. Seems like everyone on this ship's more pent up than a teenage boy at... fuck, what's that sleezy restaurant where the waitresses basically show their boobs? Oh right, BFFs: Breast Friends Forever. Damn good chicken though.

Stepping up to the table, he gives Tess a playful smack at the tail-end of her faux self-description. He cracks a grin, taking a seat and studying the newcomer. He takes a short breath, readying himself as he oft did prior to premiere interviews and the like. Hm, guess I get to be on the other end this time. At least I'm less pushy than those fucking Access Alldis reporters. He clears his throat, extending a hand for Kate.

"Hikaru Tsukiakari, at your service. And a pleasure to meet you. As my colleague said, tell us a bit about yourself, your skills, motivations, what you hope to accomplish with us." He glances at Tess, giving her a quick smirk, before adding, "And unlike the interviews back home, your answers won't be used for a Which Makkuro Member Are You? quiz in some crap magazine."

Marko follows Hikaru out of the captain's quarters not far behind the popstar - also wearing the new uniform. "I'm Marko," he says with a small wave in greeting to Kate as people make their introductions. He smirks at Hikaru and Tess' back and forth teasing.

Pia is the last to make an entrance, emerging from the stairs down to the mid-deck. "Pia," she says taking a seat at one of the tables. "I'm the other gunner I guess," she says glancing at Tess, following her lead.

"I'm a mechanic, mostly just looking after the reactor so far though," Martine says, adding her role to the mix.

As the others speak up, Creed finds his voice once more. It takes him a moment, but he eventually cracks out "Eridas Creed. P-p-pilot of the Makkuro and other v-v-various gravcars we may come across. Also a crack shot with a g-g-gun." he says with a smile, managing to get the words out after some effort.

It isn't until Tess introduces herself that Cass fully realizes her choice of apparel, but he shrugs it off, considering that there are far stranger things that Kate has experienced thus far about their stolen warship. Oh, well. Despite antifraternization measures on co-ed League ships, half the tub was fucking each other. You learn to deal with it when in a cramped metal box with dozens of other dumbasses.

"Right. And you know me — Cass, resident systems hacker and up until now the chief engineer. Happy to be dropping one of those roles if everything works out." He turns to the others, gesturing toward Kate. "I've been working alongside her for less than a week and she already knows her way around this tub half as well as I do. She's got a military background in mechanics and a desire to get the fuck off this mining station, like any ambitious soul."

Cass pauses. "Of course, that leaves the tricky side of things. I didn't want to bring her on until she had been given an accurate understanding of our, uh, unique circumstances surrounding this fine vessel." He looks to the others for guidance, especially Hikaru. I don't think they're as paranoid as me, but giving them a chance to shut it down feels the right thing to do — for Kate, and for them.

"She could start by saying what all you've told her so far," Hikaru says, passing Cass a quick glance before looking back to their potential hire. "That way, we can know where to start." Let's see, stole a ship from the Diktat and actively wanted. Caught the attention of League spies and potentially wanted. But eh, could always talk my way out of that one. Or have the label do it for me.

Wow this is, so much going on all at once. Kate thinks to herself, listening to each of the introductions in turn, and putting the faces to the names. Maybe I was wrong, or maybe they're just putting on an act of being OK while I'm here. She takes a steadying breath. OK, focus up. Sift through, find the most important information, and respond appropriately.

Kate looks to Tess, as she volunteers to go first, keeping her eyes focused on the other woman's face out of politeness and some slight embarrassment. I sure couldn't pull that outfit off. At least, until she realizes that Tess is kind of checking her out, and she lets herself look. She's very pretty, but more importantly knows how to use it. She has that confidence about her. Wait, was she flirting with me? And aren't strawberry daiquiris drinks and not food? Kate flushes slightly, and shakes her head gently to restabilize herself. She returns Tess' gaze, but before she can respond, her attention is drawn to the young man next to her.

She watches the two banter, looking over Hikaru, and shakes his hand when he offers it with a soft "Pleasure." and a smile. Can't help but notice he didn't mention his role. Maybe comms, on account of how he's well versed in talking to people. But it seems more like media training, compared to Tess' more, personal touch. Might have something to do with this NTER5TELLAR she mentioned.

Kate looks at Marko, Pia, and Martine in turn. Marko didn't mention his role either, but he might be in a similar position to Hikaru. Pia, I can respect her reservation. And Martine is another engineer? We'll probably be spending a fair amount of time together then.

Eridas' tone and stutter reminds Kate of the vague undercurrent of tension she felt on arrival. Poor guy, something must have gotten him good. Seems like a far cry from the pilots I've known, the Diktat aces and independent hotshots, but he must be solid if the crew and ship are here in one piece.

Her attention is redirected to Cass' reintroduction, and she nods along until he mentions the military, where her lips tighten slightly. Didn't think he'd lead with that. Fuck. It's ok, it'll be ok, it was bound to come up sooner or later, we just get to see what they think early.

With everyone having finished their introductions, and all relevant mental notes made, Kate suddenly feels the weight of everyone's eyes on her. OK, step one complete. Now for step two, responding.
She coughs lightly to clear her throat, before beginning. "Skills, motivations, and hopes to accomplish. Well, like Cass said, I'm a mechanic, specialized in macro-scale engineering. I'm not so good with the little stuff, personal size and all, but if its bigger than you, I'm your gal. Motivation and hopes, She pauses for a moment. "First, I would like to get back into space again. As, much fun as it's been here, I think it's time I found something new. And second, Cass mentioned that you are currently unaffiliated with Either Side, and that aligns with my motivation to stay as far away from them as possible. Which then brings me to, She takes a breath, having almost forgotten to do so while she was talking. "Your current situation. Cass was intentionally vague with details, regarding: he did mention the War, and that your ship was originally Idaretian make, but nothing outside of that.

Tess watches eagerly as Kate takes everything in, returning her gaze with a wink after she notices the brief flushed tone of her face. Cute and into women, a perfect addition, she thinks to herself, smirking at the thought. Hopefully a good mechanic, too. That's certainly also important. I'll have to ask her if she got the tats on the station, I could use a couple myself.

As the others speak up, she turns to face each of them in turn, glad for the continued banter with Hikaru as he adds to her jest. When it finally gets back to Cass, she raises an eyebrow. Does he plan to give this new girl all of the information about what we've been up to, right from the get-go? Will that not scare her off? Seems unwise, but whatever, not my recruit. But what if she decides to ditch us and turn us in? We'd just have to kill her. And I'd probably have to be the one to do it. She sighs, deciding to bite the bullet and simply lay it all bare.

"Well, if you insist," she responds to Cass, before turning to face the newcomer. "You're currently standing on a stolen military vessel. Technically we stole it from the original thieves, since the Diktat is in the process of usurping the powers-that-be on Idarete, and have begun to refit their naval vessels. We snagged this one out from under them and shot down a few of their fighters that tried to intercept us, and now have a cruiser trying to hunt us down. Those two," she says, nodding towards Cass and Creed, "also managed to kill a league agent on Idarete before we left, so we're currently on the shit list for both galactic superpowers. That's why the ship is being repainted, refitted with a new transponder, and why we've got this lovely box of new uniforms sitting on the table there," she continues, before using her hands to hold her hoodie wide so the design is fully visible.

"Aren't they adorable? Martine did an amazing job on the logo!" she continues, shifting back to a more jovial tone as she admires their new duds. We should get her to draw some more stuff. Maybe a little portrait of the crew we can tape to the wall. That sounds fun.

Oh, yeah, she was definitely flirting. Kate thinks as she catches Tess' wink. Focus, focus. Y'all can be distracted later. Even though it seems like the initial awkwardness is fading, there is still the matter of the ship.

She listens as Tess speaks, and her eyes widen when she mentions the acquisition method. Fuck me running, actively stolen from the Diktat? I had a suspicion of something, cuz not all those parts were factory from Idarete, not to mention the layout, but for fuck's sake. And they killed a League officer? No wonder Cass said they were trying to keep their heads down, they're in some deep shit. At least it's balanced out somewhat, being wanted by both sides. She gently blows out a breath. But, upside is, that means they're gonna try their damnedest to stay incognito, and a 'new' independent ship would be good cover.

"Well, that explains why he was being so cagey." Kate responds after a moment, glancing at Cass. "I appreciate you saying something, that is, a rather large caveat. That being said, however, I am in a somewhat similar position." She picks her next words carefully. "As Cass said, I was enlisted in the past. But my exit from service was, less than honorable. So, I am familiar with having a proverbial target on my back, and with you all having the same, it sounds like we can help each other stay low-profile."

Tess' tone shift catches Kate off guard, and she blinks for a moment, not quite registering what it is that the other woman is talking about. She looks at the box, then back at Tess, before it clicks that she's talking about the hoodie she's wearing, and that the design is shared across the rest of the crew. She then sees the ears on the hood, and she glances at the rest to see if they're all like that. I mean, they're cute alright, but they don't seem very practical. Sure as hell don't want those flapping around while I'm shoulder deep in something. She winces slightly, images of engineers she'd known not paying attention to their clothes or hair and getting sucked into various machines playing in her head. She then looks closer at Martine and realizes that while they share a design, the jumpsuits are lacking the ears, and she relaxes. "They certainly are cute, but you had me worried for a second. I thought you were saying that I should work in that, and I was gonna ask for something with, uh, fewer grab points." She chuckles lightly as the rest of the concern leaves her shoulders.

"To be fair, Cass is a little cagey most of the time," Tess responds, lightly chuckling as she turns to face the man. And a big ol' softie once you get to know him. Who knew? She lets go of her hoodie so it falls back to its natural resting position, listening as the woman explains her own side of things further. Perfect, another criminal to add to the lot. Would be a red flag for any other crew, but I can't imagine her wanted status could be any worse than our own. She just stumbled on the perfect crew for her, and us the perfect mechanic. We can all live in fear of being hunted by the authorities together.

"Oh, yeah the hoodies are just lounge wear," Tess responds, as Kate explains her momentary panic about the uniforms. Though we still need to find someone to add ears to the vacc suit helmets. Maybe she's good enough at welding to do it. Hikaru and I will just have to sit her down and convince her of the merits. "We've got basic shirts and pants, jumpsuits for when we need them, plus some other accessories along with those. Plenty to choose from, you can wear whatever fits you best," she responds, offering the woman a smile.

"Information is a weapon," Cass says, shrugging off the women's agreement in his cagey behavior. I'd be dead if I wasn't. His worries are paradoxically assuaged and intensified as Tess explains their crimes against both the Diktat and the League. We're putting all our cards on the table, trusting this stranger. But I'll always trust my gut, and my gut's saying Kate's on the same page about all this shit.

Cass leans against the counter, his hands behind him. "Nobody on this tub gives a shit about who each of us were before. I mean that in a charitable way," he clarifies. "Every single one of us have something we've left behind, whether for good or worse. The Makkuro's our ticket forward, yeah? The way you make it out to be, sounds like you could use that ticket too."

Hikaru lets out a slight chortle as Tess so brazenly explains their circumstances, almost surprised Cass didn't wince himself to death over the level of trust. "Yup, it's as they say. Fucked from both ends, but free to fly our own path forward, for better or worse." He offers a shrug, seeing no point in concealing any of the gritty details from someone who's gearing to jump right into the fire with them. Better she know now than when a Diktat fucker's on our tail again.

He smirks a bit, adding, "Might be a bit hard to stay completely low profile, especially if we end up back in the League's reaches." He flashes a photogenic grin similar to his red carpet snaps of the prior years. "But you'd be surprised how much mileage a hoodie and a pair of sunglasses can get." Then again, some of the die-hards have probably memorized my exact walking pattern. Maniacs.

"It sounds bad when you lay it all out like that," Pia says with a laugh as Tess tells all. "Oh hey, the three of us are ex-navy too," she adds, gesturing to Martine and Marko. "Soon we'll be saluting each other an everything," she laughs, giving a mock salute.

"I hope not," Marko says, shaking his head before turning to Kate. "I think what we're all basically saying, is welcome to the crew! If that's what you want anyway," He says with a smile.

"Could say that again," Kate laughs in response to Tess. "Can't blame him though." She relaxes a bit and leans against a wall, having both gotten a better feel for the crew and for having her major fears addressed. "And that's very kind, I'll take a look through once I'm more settled."

"That it is; how's the saying go, 'knowing is half the battle'?" She nods along with Cass's words. Left behind... Her eyes and smile turn slightly melancholic as thoughts of her old crew bubble up. I'll find you guys. Just hope y'all're doin' ok. She brightens her smile up as she looks at him again, "Right, the past is the past, and all. Ever onward and ever forward."

Kate looks to Hikaru, watching his grin. Yeah that's, absolutely well practiced. "For sure, but I'm sure our combined experience will do the trick. She tilts her head slightly. "And you're right, I would probably be surprised, I've never needed to use that trick. Have you?"

She catches Pia's salute in the corner of her eye and winces jokingly, still smiling to hide the real wince, "I'm with Marko on that one. Not to mention that I don't know any Idaretian salutes, which they would catch pretty quickly, I think. Kate glances around the room, shifting against the wall slightly. "But, yeah, if I didn't want it I wouldn't be here. She pauses for a second. "So, that brings up something I feel like I should ask about: do y'all have a Captain, or are you a more leaderless ship? Do we need their sign-off or anything before moving forward?"

"Sure do," Cass says, cracking a grin. "Captain Glitter." He claps a hand on Hikaru's shoulder, giving it a firm squeeze. "He's still green, and his leadership experience is limited to high-pep boy bands, but he's a quick study. And on a serious note, he's capable of making a hard decision when the time comes for it. I know my limits, and sometimes I need a kick in the ass to get into gear."

The engi shrugs. "For the most part though, we're self-governing, I guess."

"Captain Glitter!" Tess continues, raising her hand to her brow in her own mocking salute to her friend. "The most feared and notorious pirate captain of Asteria." She ends her salute, instead moving to a feigned look of shock and fear. "The pirate of pop! The cat with a cat! The twink who can think! It's Captain Glitter, oh noooo!" To end her charade, she pretends as if she has fainted, falling lazily to one side, tilting her head, and closing her eyes for good measure. I hope he knows this is his nickname forever now. It comes from a place of love, she thinks, trying trying not to interrupt her feigned feint with the laugh she can feel coming on.

Hikaru's paparazzi grin shifts into a smirk at Kate's question about disguises, almost finding amusement in knowing she has no idea who he is. Guess it makes sense. Asteroid miners, rich corpos, and space pirates aren't exactly our target demo. Gotta be some fucking brutish pirate with all our singles though... Hikaru almost instinctively rolls his eyes as his unfortunate nickname is already shared with the newcomer. He shakes his head, giving almost a spiteful smile, the sort a youngest sibling gives after being teased. The one that says I love you, but I'll remember this when it comes time to unplug life support. They're lucky I like them. Mostly.

"Yeah, that'd be me," he says, trying to return to a warm smile. "Still learning the ropes, and we've all got somewhat of a say anyways, but falls on me to whip these clowns into shape when the situation calls for it, I guess." A confident smirk quickly returns though. "Besides, the music industry in the League's just as cutthroat as what we're in. Just replace Diktat fuckers with rabid fans, League spies with tabloid journalists, pirates with those people who try to cut your hair and then sell it online..."

He trails off, grimacing with blank eyes as a flood of memories wash back over him. "But anyways, consider yourself signed off on my part. I'd say we put it to a vote, but seems we're all on board, yeah?"

Cass grins as Hikaru gracefully rolls with the pet name. Guess he's moved on from our tiff earlier. Good. Guess I have too.

"You know my vote," he says, looking toward Creed, Tess, and the others, not expecting much complaint.

"Yes for me," Tess responds, offering Kate a warm smile as she says so. "I think she'll fit in real well here." She has already dealt with us this long and hasn't shied away, so she must be pretty chill underneath it all. Curious to see what she's like when not being interviewed, though.

Creed listens to the conversation as quiet as ever. For a moment after he's addressed he doesn't even seem to notice he's being spoken to, he's just happy there's no more raised voices. But then; "Oh right. Yeah, welcome aboard Kate. I'm happy to have you on as our mechanic!" he smiles at her, looking briefly at the others.

Kate's split second of panic that the captain is already on deck is quickly replaced by barely stifled giggles at Cass' delivery of the nickname and at Tess' theatrics. Captain Glitter?? Makes sense, considering his background, but still. At least he seems to be taking it in good fun, for the most part. After a moment, her laughs subside, her smile still lingering as she notices him trailing off. "People really do that?" she says, mostly to herself, unable to quite believe the lengths to which some fans will go.

"Well, then that settles it." Kate looks to the rest of the crew, "I look forward to working with all of you! My only remaining question would be: where will I be bunking?" It'll be good to be off this station again. Nothing against the good people of Asteria, but I'm not built to stay in one place.

"Yep, that answers that then," Hikaru says with a cool smirk, almost surprised at how unanimous the decision was. Let's hope any new recruits are this easy, otherwise I'll start asking for resumes... He points to the hall containing the crew quarters. "Crew quarters are down there. Take your pick of any that don't look occupied." He crosses his arms and gives a cheeky shrug. "We haven't sprung for nameplates quite yet."

Tess stands, beginning to raise her arms to stretch, but stopping herself once she remembers she is far from fully dressed. Right, my clothes are back in Cass' room. And he wanted to talk, guess I will head back there, she thinks, as she begins to step towards the room to the officer's quarters once more.

"You can just follow me," she responds to Kate, at the question of bunks, and Hikaru's short reply. "I'm already going that way, seems like we did what we came here to do," she continues, offering the newcomer a more polite smile. With that she heads through the door into the hall, whether Kate follows or not, motioning towards the two still-vacant rooms if she does. She then makes her way to Cass' door, opening it and stepping inside before closing it behind her.

"Welcome to the Makkuro," Cass says to Kate, beaming proudly — both for her sake, and his own, having successfully scouted and recruited her. I'm sure she'll fit in well.

"We should keep things on the down-low until we finish the repair jobs for Holland, yeah? Don't want to cross too many wires. We've got another job for her coming up soon, but we can talk about that later. If you need help clearing out your flat on the station or hauling anything up, let us know."

He notices Tess retire to his room. Good, we can finish our talk. I gotta figure out what the fuck that was. What "we" are. He follows after, sighing anxiously to himself, before stepping inside.
Cass and Tess "Watch RP"
Cass opens up the door to his quarters, closing it behind and pausing at the door. The sight of Tess on his bunk, compad in hand, in his hoodie, too, causes him to smile involuntarily. Damn, would not have expected all this to happen a couple hours ago. There is a tightness in his chest, an ache almost — no doubt the hormones swirling around his lizard brain as it tries desperately to attach label or meaning to their intimacy together. "Hey," he says softly, stepping over. "Scooch." He sits next to her on the bed, looking down at the compad almost unintentionally. "Doing some casual shopping?"

When Cass arrives, Tess glances up from her compad he offers him a small smile in response. “Yeah. Well, just browsing,” she responds to his question, moving over some as he takes a seat next to her. “I was waiting for you. You said you wanted to talk?” She continues, before closing her compad screen and setting if on the bed next to her. He seems so nervous. I wonder if he is always like that after sex she thinks, holding back a smirk at the thought.

Cass nods, feeling the spotlight on him as Tess puts down her compad and gives him her undivided attention. "I, yeah, I did. I really enjoyed that," he says, thinking back to before his alarm shattered their peace, laying together in a warm tangle while the TV entertained itself. "And I hope we can make it happen again. The main thing is, I just wanted to get a feel for where things are between us now. I, well, know what this meant for me. What did it mean for you?"

“I enjoyed it too,” Tess responds, allowing the smirk to come out after the man’s words. “Don’t take this the wrong way, but you’re better than I thought you’d be,” she continues, chuckling at the man. However, her lightheartedness fades as he seems to make the conversation more serious on her.

She listens as the man comments about his feelings, implying that he wants more than just a fling, and she gazes on for a moment in silence. “I had a lot of fun with you, and I am happy to do it again if you want. I am not sure exactly what it means to me, though,” she continues, looking into his eyes with a mixture of worry and guilt. “Like, we had sex once. And it was good. But we have not done much else together that wasn’t with the others. I don’t really think that makes us anything right now. But maybe it could become something?” she continues, more thinking aloud than anything as she speaks her thoughts to the vulnerable man.

Cass smirks, shrugging off the sideways compliment. She doesn't need or want to know about my time dating in officer school. If she's happy, I'm happy. As Tess speaks, he nods, the sobering reality of her words sinking in and centering his anxious thinking. It causes some of the tension in his chest to let up — replaced by the void of loneliness that is as familiar to him as an old song. Still, the bit of hope in her tone at the end is uplifting to him. "Yeah," he says softly in agreement. "I overthink so much in my life. I don't want to overthink this. I just wanna do what feels right." With a sigh, Cass leans back on the bunk, massaging his eyes for a moment. "And right now, that's — you know, this," he says, gesturing in a wide circle around them. "Sex, a cuddle, and then doing our jobs." He cracks a grin.

Tess listens, glad that his response is understanding and not pushy. "To be honest," she begins, finding it easier to be open with Cass since their heart-to-heart and its follow-up. "It's nice that you asked," she continues, feeling relieved that the conversation is happening, despite her worry going into it. "I can't even remember the last time I slept with someone who still wanted me around after. Well, around for more than just another go." Maybe some of the dead ones would have. I'll never know. "Like don't get me wrong, sex work is great fun, and even better money - especially on Strocho. It's not so great for making connections, though, y'know?" He probably doesn't. Why would he? There is no way he would get paid for a good time, he's too awkward, she thinks, smirking at the thought. Maybe with a lonely gay man, but not any of the women Johns I've seen.

"Guess you have now," Cass says with a shrug and a smile. "And yeah, I know what you mean. Not exactly the same thing, but I felt that when I was building up my network for chem production back on Idarete. Hundreds of connections, entirely transactional." He winces somewhat, recalling something. "I mean shit, I fell for a dancer I was selling to. Not exactly the right channel to find something more."

"Different worlds, but the same story," Tess responds with a grin, as Cass mentions his time on the rock as a drug manufacturer. "If it was a few years ago, I'd probably have been that drug addict you had the hots for. I am sure a lot of my dealers felt the same. Though some did eventually get the time of day. Anything for a free hit, right?" she asks, frowning as she thinks back to the darker days in her past. "It's a pretty shit spot to be in life. I hope some of them manage to escape it. With you gone now, maybe it will be easier," she ponders, thinking back to her recovery and how difficult it was - still - to not fall back into old habits. Good thing I'm mostly clean now, I can't imagine what it would be like to live on this ship with a known cook.

"Anything," Cass agrees, knowing too well the dangers of chem addiction and the desperate, clawing grasp it had taken on him before. "Pretty fucked up time for everyone, it sounds like. Glad I'm out of there, even if I have to live with the scars. Speaking of, gotta take my meds." He stands up from the side of his bunk, grabbing a small pill bottle from a shelf. Removing the cap, he tosses one white tablet back and swallows. "You, uh, got any plans?" he says, leaning against the bulkhead. "If not, we should settle in and find out what happens in the final act of Tornado Titans. Gotta know if Skitter blows his rival's head off or not. You were paying attention, right?" Cass grins.

Tess frowns as she watches the man take his pills, wondering what exactly he needs them for, but knowing it can't be good. You'd never know it from looking at him, but he must be living with so much pain, she thinks. Her frown is quickly replaced with a laugh, however, as he mentions the movie that she'd paid no attention to. "We can finish it, I guess," she responds, once she calms enough to speak again. "Or it can just be background noise again. If you wanted," she continues with a shrug. If I'm going to stay the night in this mess of a room, the least he can do is show me a good time again.

"And miss Skitter's final act of vengeance?" Cass says, his grin widening. "I think I'll manage." He sets the pill bottle back on his shelf and taps on his compad, bringing the paused movie back onto his screen. Stepping over, he kicks his boots off and slides into the bunk beside Tess once more.

Creed gave a soft wave to the engineer and a warm smile. "Welcome to the crew, I look forward to traveling with you!" He said shyly. "You'll fit in well, here. I think, at least." He says, before standing up and getting himself something light to eat.

Tess
Over the last few days you worked several shifts at the Cloest Moon. The job is easy enough, and some of your customers tip well, although you notice your tips don't seem to quite as high as some of the other more experienced waitresses.

You do get to know Virdia a little better though, who appears keen to follow up on her promise to let you perform on stage, however the opportunity has yet to materialise. You also get to listen in on the drunken conversations of the various customers that frequent the club. Most are the usual drunken ramblings and interpersonal drama, however a couple of conversations catch your ear in particular.

You hear a couple of recent regulars, officers from the bulk freighter Alhamdulillah which has been stuck on the station at least since you arrived due to the strike, talking about how Asteria has assured them the strike should be coming to an end soon, "one way or another what ever that means".

Another conversation that sticks out in your mind was between a group of four men you suspect are from one of the pirate crews that call the station home. They talk in hushed tones and you only catch a snippet but you hear mention of them planning to visit The Augury on Alldis - something you recall Hartjen and his lackey talking about as they left the mines of 3138 T-1.

After spending the first day of the repairs asking around the docks, you find some odd manual labour work. The striking dock workers mostly leave you and the other workers alone as the work doesn't directly undermine their strike. While the pay isn't great, after a couple of days of getting to know you, the other workers talk pretty openly with you about the station's problems at what has lead to the strike.

Over the last couple of years the workers have seen no pay rises while the time they are given to load and unload ships has slowly been decreasing. This push for faster work has started leading to injuries, with some workers having their limbs crushed by falling cargo containers, and the Asteria Corporation has reportedly been dismissive of any concerns and pays very little in compensation. Many of the workers also have little choice in their situation too, as passage off the station can be expensive, so many are stuck here and forced to submit to whatever working conditions Asteria creates.

You also bump into and talk briefly to a red headed man who goes by Mover, an old callsign from what you can tell. While your conversation is brief, you learn that he is a pilot of some sort, albeit currently lacking a flying gig, and he appears eager to get off the station. Something about owing someone money from what you heard.

The repairs on the Makkuro go well, although you still feel like they were hampered by the strike. None the less you feel confident more got done with you leading them than if you had just left things to Holland's crew. You gelled well with the work crew, although other than Kate you don't find anyone else you'd be interested in poaching.

Hikaru
The first couple of days you spend looking for somewhere to perform, are unfortunately unsuccessful, with all of the places you try either not recognising you or feeling your music doesn't align with their clientele. However, on the third day you get lucky. After speaking to the manager of a small club not too far from the Closest Moon, a customer calls you over. You expect it to simply be yet another fan interaction, however it turns out that she runs something of an underground music scene on the station. She books you for a performance later that night at a semi-legal rave in one of the cargo warehouses down in the docks, currently empty thanks to the strike.

Showing up, the backstage experience is very different to what you have become accustomed to, with no producers or media personalities to be seen, only people who care about the music and their specific craft, whether it be performing, lighting, or sound mixing etc. The gig goes well and your performance, being the second of three total, is well received by the hundred or so people in attendance. Towards the end of the night Saida, the woman who booked you, pays you 200 credits for the performance, before word starts to spread that station security are on their way to break up the gathering. You soon make it back to the ship without incident.

You claim one of the two empty rooms in officer's quarters which both lie at the end of the corridor. The room is small, containing only a bed, storage container and terminal screen, however they it is still a step up from the shared barracks you lived in on Sarma - even on Finity's End you had a bunkmate. You settle in and spend the night in your new home, the hum of the ship's systems eventually lulling you to sleep.

Repairs worth 6 HP have been completed, meaning the Makkuro is currently at 20/25 HP.

Early the next morning, the call comes through that you had been waiting for. Lagunov reaches out, telling you to meet him in an hour a short walk spinward around the circular docks to where the docking bays Asteria reserves for its own ships are located. After a quick breakfast and filling in Kate on the mission to clear out the asteroid mine for Asteria, you gear up and make your way over to meet him. More heavily armed than most on station, you catch a few strange looks from passers-by, although with the strike on the docks are relatively deserted at this hour and no one gives you any trouble.

Arriving at the location Lagunov gave you, you find the station security chief and several others in Asteria work uniforms waiting for you. Lagunov stands talking to a woman in uniform while the others busy themselves loading supplies into a nearby airlock. A screen displaying the bay's exterior shows a small shuttle is docked to the airlock. Painted white and adorned with the A of Asteria's corporate logo, you assume this will be the craft that returns you to the mining outpost on 3138 T-1.

"Are these the guys?" the woman asks Lagunov, spotting you first. She has dark skin and curly black hair which bounces softly in the low gravity of the station's docks. Like the other replacement miners, she wears an Asteria jumpsuit, although she gives off an air of authority the others don't.

"They are," Lagunov replies, turning to see you. The station security chief is wearing his own uniform and trench coat, although he looks tired and his facial hair is more unkept than the past few times you have seen him. "This is Subira Ayodele, she's going to be the new head of operations on the outpost," he says introducing the woman to you. "This is Hikaru, Cass, Tess, Eridas, and... I don't know you," he says continuing the introductions but pausing when he reaches Kate.  "It's fine to bring another person but the pay stays the same," he quickly adds.

"Good to meet you all," Subira says with a wide smile. "Hopefully there's nothing down in the mine to worry about and we can get straight to work, but either way I'm glad to have you along."

Cass wakes next to Tess for the second time, and he simply lays in the half-light, smiling like a fool. Almost thought last night was a dream. He half-considers pinching himself to confirm. The rest of the early morning is spent snoozing comfortably, as long as he can. As soon as the call from Lagunov comes in however, Cass hurries off to finish his preparations for their mission. If we're gonna be boots on the ground again in that creep-ass outpost, I wanna be kitted up. Not taking a laser beam to the shoulder another time. Holstering Hartjen's collapsible rifle, he dons his newly purchased combat armor, finding a strange unfamiliarity to it. Heavier than what I trained with, back in Officer School. But I like that.

When they make for Lagunov's meeting point, Cass moves with a spring in his step. He looks toward Tess, giving her a nod of assurance as they go. I wonder if she's nervous. We all should be, he considers, though he doesn't air his thoughts aloud.

"Nice to meet you," Cass greets Subira, shaking her hand. "This is Kate, chief engineer." He elaborates no further. It's good that Lagunov doesn't recognize her. Less chance of corporate tension from poaching her talent I guess. "When's liftoff?"

As their call comes in, Hikaru takes a deep sigh and pulls out his new equipment. He does a few quick stretches, limbering up as he thinks of what's to come. Facing a vicious cave monster wouldn't be an ideal time to pull a muscle. He dons the weighty armor, audibly oofing as it falls onto his shoulders. Fuck, almost like those vests we had to wear for endurance training. At least this looks better.

Grabbing Cass's hand-me-down rifle, he lets out a sigh, glancing at himself in his quarter's mirror. Damn, this is weird. Surreal, like a movie. He shakes his head, stepping out and making his way to the designated meeting place with his crew. He gives Subira a warm smile and nod. "Likewise. We should all be ready to go when you all are."

Before retiring for the night, Kate takes a walk on the station to mull over the 'interview', and to go retrieve the rest of her things from the room she had been renting. They're a good crew. Very tight knit. I just hope I fit in as well as it seems. Once she's back, she takes a few minutes to unpack and settle in, feeling at once comforted by the drone of being on a ship again, and disquieted by the solitude, before drifting off to sleep.

The notification for the job jolts Kate out of her rest, and she looks around slightly disoriented, before remembering where she is and how she got there. Had better get used to it, you'll be living here for the next, uh. However long. She stands and stretches, dressing quickly in her new uniform and taking a quick look at herself in the mirror. Not bad. They mustn't've skimped on quality for the customizations. She places a cigarette between her lips, but hesitates before lighting it, unsure of the others' disposition towards smoking on the ship. So instead, she tucks it behind her ear while she checks over her mag rifle and shotgun before following the others to the meeting point.

Once there, Kate gives Lagunov and Subira both professional nods at Cass' introduction, noting his lack of elaboration. Smart. "Pleasure to meet you as well."

Tess wakes in Cass' room, and finds herself briefly disoriented by it, before she recalls the previous evening's events. She considers leaving him and returning to her room, but choose to remain for a time, enjoying the warmth of a body next to her. When the call comes in to meet up for their mission, she stands and rubs her eyes, before trudging to the head to shower. She returns to the room after to retrieve her clothes, before making her way to her own room to grab her guns and all of the other gear she'll need. So this is my life now. Sleeping with a drug dealer and going off to work fully armed. If the Harlequins knew how similar I'd become to them, they probably be laughing their asses off at me now.

Once they are at the meeting point, Tess listens as the others speak first. "Can't be too prepared either way," she responds with a grin to Subira, tapping the pistols on her hips at mention of the potential for danger. If there's nothing down there, then I'd love to know how Hartjen's man got injured, or how that Vi lost its arm. I'm sure they know as well as us that there's something down there. The real question is, do they already know what? Or are they as in the dark as we are?
