Cass cries out in pain as the spike catches him in the shoulder — the same one previously scorched by the League spook's laser fire. Fuck, that just missed my head, he realizes. With blurred vision from the pain, he squints to see the others regroup in the main cavern, helping cover them with suppressive fire that goes wide due to his injured arm. "If more come, fall back to the elevator!"

When the third xenoform falls, Cass lets his head fall in a sigh of relief. And all it took was getting a needle shot halfway through my fucking arm. After a rapid headcount, he uses the crate for leverage to pull himself to his feet, though the effort leaves him wincing in pain radiating from his injured shoulder. "Hey, the company guy's still with us," he manages. "Anybody got something for him? Regardless, we should back the fuck out of here for now. We can come back down with the drone and a better plan, yeah?"
OOC
I think we all have +1 INT and no Heal training so about the same flat roll of +0 for a Lazarus Patch check on Anderson. It's been 4 rounds, so the DC would be 6+4=10. I recommend one of the Full Experts try as we still have our skill check re-roll available.

"Can try and get him to the med bay, but we should be quick and careful," Hikaru says, authority in his tone as it seems the worst is finally over. "You three too. Get patched up there and we can come back down after, with the drone." He eyes his injured companions, not wanting anymore casualties. Strapping his rifle back to his back, he pulls out his compad and snaps a few pictures of the xeno corpses. Fuck, these better give us a pay raise. He sighs, glancing at the limp body of Anderson and wondering if they can even save him.

Kate watches the xenoform twitch, and when it finally goes still she lets out the breath she had been holding, and listens to the silence. Is that all of them? Can't be, there's gotta be more somewhere, they had to have come from somewhere.

She takes a brief stock of the situation as it stands, and moves over to Anderson, stowing her rifle along the way. "I've got a Laz-patch and know a bit of first aid, but he's in rough shape. I'll see what I can do." She says as she moves, then kneels next to the dying man and sets about stanching the worst of the bleeding.

"Guy's not gonna make the lift ride," Cass says to Hikaru, the color drained from his cheeks. "Gotta treat him here." Slinging his laser rifle on his good shoulder, he steps over to the mechanic. The draw of a new challenge distracts him from the pain. Taking a knee, he inspects Anderson's punctured suit, doing his best to make a layman's assessment despite his lack of training to pull from. "Here, Kate, keep trying. You got this."

Cass shakes his head slowly in defeat. He was just right here, following along barely a minute ago. Why the fuck did he have to go off on his own like some badass vid hero? He already crossed fate once by being off the day his entire crew got shot to shit.

The sudden quiet unnerves the technician, and he is once again reminded of the terrible pain in his bad shoulder. "Let's fall back for now, pull these fucking pins out of us, and grab the void hawk. If there's anything left in this shithole, we can find it before it finds us. Besides, it's, uh, a lot easier to put a drone back together than a human." He stares down at Anderson's fresh corpse for a moment, before heading for the lift.

Hikaru lets out a sigh and frowns as it becomes clear Anderson has died. If he'd just stayed by us... A lump forms in his throat, but he manages to keep himself together. "You tried and that counts for something." He tries to avoid looking at the now-corpse of their once-escort and steps back towards the elevator. "Yeah, come on. No sense lingering. Let's get you three patched up and go from there."

Creed had fallen to his knees, panting as he watched the others try and heal Anderson, That could have been me... He thinks to himself, the adrenaline and fear wearing off to finally allow him to process just how much he was hurting. He shudders and lets out a small groan as he stands back up. "Yeah, back up the lift." He says softly, walking back onto the elevator and leaning into a corner. Eridas stares wide-eyed at the floor, just trying to parse what that fight was.

You retreat to the elevator and breath a sigh of relief as the doors shut behind you. You make the short journey up in silence, and soon the doors open revealing the mining outpost once more. Stepping into the main hanger, the Pioneer is still being unloaded by the Asteria crew, however visible progress has been made and you are able to spot the case containing the void hawk drone neatly stacked along side some of the other supply crates.

The new outpost supervisor, Ayodele, stands nearby working at something on a dataslab. The doors opening draws her attention to you.

"That was fas-" Ayodele begins. "Damn, you guys look like you've been through it," she says after getting a look at you. "Where's Anderson?" She asks a moment later after releasing his absence.

The lift ride is just long enough for the adrenaline to wear off and for the pain set in. Shot, burned, spiked, Cass thinks to himself in irritation as he clenches his jaw against the throbbing sting. The fuck is next? I hope these things aren't carrying some nasty microbes. He eyes the pierced flesh, grimacing for a moment.

As he steps off the lift, Cass' eyes fall on the void hawk. "Creed, gimme a hand, yeah?" he asks quietly as the supervisor speaks up. He pats Hikaru on a shoulderblade, nodding toward Ayodele. She's not gonna wanna hear that shit from me.

"Oi," Hikaru scolds. "Med bay now, you three. Your toy can wait." He glares at Cass in particular, knowing the fixation on the drone. Can it not wait? Like, fuck, maybe take care of that shoulder first? He lets out an annoyed sigh before a frown paints his face, looking to Ayodele greeting them. "He, uh... we tried our best to save him, but." He pauses, trying to maintain his composure given the circumstances.

He looks down for a moment, solemnly. "He took a fatal blow from these things that were down there." He pulls out his compad, opening a photo he took of one of the xeno corpses and showing the supervisor.

Tess frowns as she watches the failed attempts to revive their brief escort, but feels little sadness from his death. Poor fool, she thinks, as the monitor shows the end of his life. If he'd had more sense and actually stuck with us, he'd still be here instead of another victim. She quickly makes her way to the elevator, holding her hand to her arm to help stop the bleeding from the cuts she'd received. Hopefully they have a good medic on their crew, we certainly need it.

"The tunnel down there is not safe," Tess clarifies, as Hikaru tiptoes around the death of Anderson. "We are all lucky to be standing before you with what we found down there, and we don't know if there are more of the creatures left. We definitely need to be better prepared before we go back down, though," she thinks, frowning at the thought of having to face off against more of the things. "Spare flashlights, med kits, anything else you have to aid us would be appreciated." And perhaps a few more bodies, if there are any brave enough to come with us, and smart enough not to split up.

Ayodele's face drops as Hikaru delivers the news of Anderson's death. Although his words seem mostly to confuse her further, the more he talks.

"Things?" She asks, turning to look at the photo. "What the hell is that?" She asks, grabbing the idol's compad and moving it closer to her for a better look. She appears stunned for a moment, looking at the compad as Tess speaks, however Tess' words seem to eventually snap her out of it.

"Sure, there should still me a medkit and maybe some stims in the medbay - assuming the pirates didn't mess around in there," she says. "We can certainly spare some flashlights or lanterns, what else do you need? We're no strangers to hazard pay, but we can't work down there until we know that it's one hundred percent safe."

Kate stares at the body for a long moment, the Lazarus patch's monitor droning, before shutting it off and wiping the blood from her hands onto the dead man's shirt. Fuck. We almost had him. If only-- She abruptly cuts off her line of thinking. We did what we had to do to survive. Who knows how much worse off we could be if we hadn't put those creatures down as fast as we did. She stands, lets out a brief gallows laugh at Cass' comment, nods in acknowledgement of Hikaru's words, and walks back to the elevator.

Kate keeps quiet as Hikaru talks to Ayodele, grateful that she doesn't have to be the one to brief their employer on the situation. She instead glances around the room, looking for either a designated smoking area, or an intake vent. "Fuck, lunch break is right." she echoes quietly after Cass. Might be longer than just lunch, the three of them got torn up pretty good.

"I'm gonna go see what they've got up here too, hopefully enough to get y'all patched up," Kate says, glancing at Creed and Tess. "Y'all comin' along?" She add as she heads to catch up to Cass.

Kate meets the other engineer at the medbay, and asks "Find anything good? Need any help?"

Cass sighs wearily as he finishes his search, putting the contents spread out atop a nearby table. "Yeah," he answers Kate, leaning against it. "Couple packs of Lift and a medkit. The disinfectant and antibiotics gotta help, right? I mean, against whatever the fuck kinda alien microbes might be in our blood now."

He nods toward her. "You, uh, looked like you at least knew what you were doing, down there with Anderson. Any chance you're handy with sticking a stim?"

"Sharp end goes in the patient's skin, right?" Kate says with a slight smile. "But yeah, like I said down there, I know some basic first aid, but that only goes, so far, y'know?"

She takes inventory of the supplies, and does some quick mental math. The three of them were hurt, but there's only two stims. Cass' shoulder looks rough, and Creed was real out of it, but Tess seems like she's holding up the best. We'll check in when they get here. Kate then picks up one of the stims and primes it. "You're not allergic to any meds, right?" She says as she moves closer to Cass, looking to find the best spot on his arm to place the applicator.

Cass manages a smile, the mechanic's humor distracting him from the pain. "Nah, no allergies," he answers straight, considering the full range of pharmaceuticals, narcotics, and other agents he'd abused in the last year. And good thing, too. Wouldn't be here today if I had any.

"Hold on, use this instead," he says, noticing Kate lingering near his shoulder. He pulls away part of his battleweave armored vest, exposing a chemjack buried in his inner left forearm. "Former addict's got its perks when it comes to this shit." He waits patiently as she works.

"Ah, fuck!" Cass hisses as the Lift hits his veins. "Not at you. Feels like a goddamned ice-cold energy drink just got pumped into my circulation." He coughs, his breathing picking up as his body forces air out he didn't know he was holding onto. Standing up, he stretches his arm, surprised to find the pain dulled to a near-unnoticeably tingle. "Damn, that works fast. Nice work, newcomer."

As the group of them returned to the surface, Creed found his mind wandering. The places he's been, the place he's in, the places he'll go. He thought of his mother... The things she'd say if she saw me here. She'd have given me an earful about being hurt. He thinks to himself. He is pulled back into the present by Kate, and nods softly at Ayodele, giving her a soft smile before he also retreats into the medbay, hoping to find somewhere to sit and stew about his pain.

As he entered the medbay, he grimaced watching the final moments of Kate trying to help Cass. He carefully found a spot to sit, trying not to groan in pain. "I'm... sorry about what happened back there." He said softly. "I'm still not fully back but that was dangerous. I wasn't really expecting it to be like that." He blinked a few times as he tried to stop himself from tearing up. "I think that was the first real fight I've ever been in." He said, trailing off, Cass had it worse... but I've still never been that close to death before. He thinks, staring at the ground.

Hikaru nods as the three head to the medical bay, feeling some relief that Cass and Creed are taking their injuries seriously. Turning back to the supervisor, he says, "I'm not sure what they are. But there were at least three, and we have no idea where they came from yet." He mentally takes notes to wonder what else they may need to finish the job. "Lights, a map or survey of the tunnels down there so far, if it's been scanned at all. Maybe some flares. I'll want to confirm with the rest of my crew when they're patched up too."

"Yeah, stim's'll do that to ya. Feel better now?" Kate says as Cass stretches out. "I'm just glad it wasn't worse, yknow? Those spikes are wicked."

Kate glances at Creed when he walks in, then her eyes widen slightly as he talks. "Shit, that was your first? Well, you seemed to handle yourself pretty well, considering." She looks down, her tone shifting to apologetic. "I'm, uh, sorry if I was too harsh down there. Old habits die hard."

"I think I want to check Tess out before we use this last stim, but if you want I can get you looked over right now, see what kind of shape you're in physically, if you're OK with that?" She offers to Creed as they wait for their third injured crew member to arrive.

Hikaru & Tess
Ayodele nods a long to Hikaru's list.

"That should all be possible," she says, making some notes on her dataslab. "I'll see what I can do. You two should probably go get checked over too," she suggests.

"Let me know when you're ready to head back down there and I'll get you what you need."

"Anything you have would be appreciated," Tess responds, her adrenaline starting to subside as things calm down, and the shooting pain in her arm finally starts to become more apparent. She winces and nods as she as the med bay is suggested, before turning to follow after the others. Why'd it have to be weird aliens? Why couldn't they have just hurt themselves from a fall, or from some machinery?

Finding her way to the room where the others are already gathered, she catches the tail end of Creed's comment. "Don't worry about it," she responds. "You did much better than many would their first time. And you lived to tell the tale. Not everyone gets to say that." Certainly not any of the people I've fought with before. Not that most of them even knew they were in any danger, she thinks, as she makes her way to a medical bed to rest.

Cass grimaces at Creed's apology, nodding as he considers how much worse things could have been. Panic gets you killed. It's damn lucky that none of us died down there. Well, except for that miner.

"I don't think any of us could have expected those... things," Cass says softly, idly inspecting his wounded shoulder. He turns to face the pilot with a look of understanding. "Just... next time, stay put and don't wander. If you're losing control, find a wall, put your back to it, and call for help. We can also see about some combat stims, next time we come across a dealer. Might help with your focus if we find ourselves taking on a trio of fucked up bugs again."

Cass looks up at Tess as she lays down in one of the medical beds. "Hey, how you holding up?" he asks, his tone gentle yet concerned. "Saw you kick some fucking teeth loose. That was incredible."

Hikaru trails behind Tess, making their way to the med bay. He feels some relief, a weight off his shoulders, as Cass and Creed seem to be in good care. He lets out a weighty sigh, leaning against a wall as he looks over the rest of his crew. Can't believe we actually fucking did it... "Yeah, was straight out of a movie," the pop star says after Cass, beaming at his friend. "Ayodele said she'd get us whatever supplies we need for back down there, by the way. I asked for lights, flares, and a map or survey of the mines. If you all need anything else, we can ask her once we're done here."

"A stiff drink would be nice," Tess responds to Hikaru with a smirk, before she winces once more in pain. Turning towards Cass, she offers the man a weak smile. "I'm doing alright. Not the sort of thing I'm used to killing, if I'm being totally honest. But we got them, and we're alive to tell the tale. Some cuts and scratches are much better than the alternative," she continues, her voice trailing with the last words as she recalls the gruesome sight of both corpses down below. Better gear, more preparation, and good comrades is all that kept us from the same fate as that pirate and miner. It's good we all head each other's backs in there. Well, most of us at least.

"Yeah..." Cass agrees, knowing that the alternative was a flesh-heap, pinned to the cave floor like the pirate and the mining tech down the lift. "Glad you're alright and have a better head for danger. When those last two both charged at us I about pissed my combat suit."

He turns to Hikaru, nodding. "Good thinking, Cap. We can try this again, the right way. Once these two are patched up, we can bring the void hawk down — I'll pilot it. Worse case scenario and we encounter more bugs, they'll scrap it and not us."

Kate looks at Tess and Hikaru as they both arrive, and listens to the conversation, glancing back and forth between Tess and Creed while she tries to figure out which one is more injured. "For real. We all got pretty lucky." She says quietly, almost to herself. She waits for a lull to speak up in full. "So, speaking of cuts and scratches, good news and bad news: good news is, we found some Lift, which will help with the injuries; bad news is, there were only two doses, and we've already taken the liberty of using on on Cass, which just leaves the one between the two of you. I was thinking about giving it to Creed, but I wanted to check in with y'all first, make sure that y'all didn't need it more. Any thoughts?"

Hikaru cracks a smirk back at Tess, crossing his arms to enjoy the brief respite. "Let's save that drink for a celebration back on the station. Holland owes us a hell of a pay raise, so why not splurge on something top shelf?" He looks to Kate, considering the dilemma presented and then looking to Tess and Creed. "As much as I love ya, Tess, I'm thinking Creed needs it a bit more. Just take it easy back down there, yeah?"

Creed can't bring himself to respond to Kate's question, focused too hard on just trying to sit through the pain he's feeling. He glances over at Cass now, repeating what he had said and letting it rattle around in his head, hoping that it sticks for next time.

"Yeah, I'll be fine. I'm... not exactly a stranger to the pain," she continues, frowning as she recalls her not-so-distant life. Just a really big needle when you really look at it, she thinks, chuckling lightly to herself.

"Just, uh, take it easy, yeah? Kick back with us and let the drone take the hits." Cass says. He becomes self-aware of the concern in his tone, and purses his lips uncomfortably. Damn, guess I really do feel some type of way about her.

He watches uneasily as Eridas sits silently. "You're gonna be alright, beratna. We're safe up here."

"Roger that." Kate says as she picks up the second dose of Lift and moves over to Eridas.

"OK, I'm going to administer this stimulant. You'll feel a slight pinch from the applicator, but it'll be over before you know it, and you'll feel better." She says calmly as she looks for a spot on his arm to apply the Lift

After healing up Cass and Creed with the lift found in the medbay, you spend the next hour or so preparing for your next descent into the mine. You grab a bite to eat from the supplies left in the outpost's mess and rest up, reloading your weapons and readying the voidhawk for deployment.

As you do, the outpost's crew continue their work of unloading the shuttle and getting the outpost ready to resume mining operations, however they shoot you strange glances and talk in hushed voice - rumours of what happened down in the mine already seeming to spread.

As you are making your final preparations by the elevator, Ayodele makes her way over to you with a crate of supplies.

"This is what I could rustle up for light," she says, setting the crate down and opening it to reveal an assortment of glowbugs, flares and four lanterns. "And I was able to pull the data on the last mining operations and generate a map of how the last crew would have left things down there," she says, flipping her dataslab around to show you a map of the tunnels.

"You guys are brave to head back down there," she adds after a brief pause.

Supplies
20 x Thermal Flares
10 x Glowbugs
4 x Lanterns

Powered by 1 type A cell for 6 hours, this handheld/belt attached lantern (1 Readied Encumbrance) emits a white light, illuminating everything within 15 meters.

Mention anything your character would have done as prep if it hasn't been discussed already. This is mostly at Fia/Grey as the others said in discord.

This is what I get for your inventories, after reloads etc.

Cass spends the next hour running diagnostics once, twice, even thrice on the voidhawk — making absolute certain its subsystems are performing at full capacity. The feelings of having little control over his environment seemed to subside when he gave himself a task he was familiar with. Haven't used shit like this since I was doing EVA work on one of those real old tubs with the Navy. Let's hope I've got the touch still.

As they regroup with Ayodele, Cass takes four flares and a pair of glowbugs, nodding a mumble of thanks to the supervisor. Brave, or stupid. Let's hope the drone gives us the upper hand here, he considers glumly.

"That map's gonna be a big help. We can survey all the known tunnels and look for any new ones that the pirates or bugs might have created."

Eridas gritted his terth as he felt the lift take hold- the not-so-familiar feeling spreading through him.
"Thanks." he said, looking up at Kate with a gentle smile.

Eridas spent most of the next hour just relaxing and trying to clear his head making sure he was ready for their next descent down into the mines. He even watched with some fascination as Cass used the new drone.

Eventually, he met back up with Ayodele. "Ooh, this is a solid amount of supplies- thanks." He says, grabbing a lantern to attach to his belt. He paused as she called them all brave... He didn't feel brave. She didn't know what he did down there. He almost got them all- "It's gotta be done." he said softly, not wanting to make eye contact.

Eridas just wants a lantern and some glowbugs, maybe one flare just in case

Hikaru feels his confidence return as Ayodele presents the group with her spared supplies and, more importantly, the map of the mines. "Agreed on all counts. This'll all be a great help. We'll do what we can to get your mine back in operation. And safe again." He tucks a couple flares and a lantern into his bag, hoping they might come in handy. Let's see anything hide down there now when we've got a dwarf star's worth of light here.

He takes a cursory glance at his crew with a steady breath. "Whenever we're all ready, let's do this. We keep our heads, we finish this job, and we get paid. And then we're taking a trip to the goddamn best restaurant on the station."

Bandaged up, but still in pain, Tess makes her way back from the med bay to the elevator. Here we go again, she thinks, as the large door comes into view. When the supply crate is brought over, she grabs one of the lanterns and attaches it to her belt before grabbing a few more flares. Those were more useful than I'd have thought.

In response to the comment on their bravery, Tess shrugs. "We need the credits," she responds matter-of-factly, before turning to her friend. "The best restaurant, and whatever the best bottle they have is. We can forget about this mine and have a good time doing it," she responds, offering him a smirk, albeit with a slight twinge from the consistent pain in her arm. And hopefully we can find some good-paying work that doesn't involve mortal danger.

Mechanics
Tess will take one lantern and 4 flares, bringing her up to 6 flares total. No need for glowbugs.
