Once everyone is patched up and safe, Kate takes a moment to find a secluded, ventilated area, and have a smoke and to let out the feelings she had compartmentalized: the fear, the shock, the loss of the man she barely knew. After taking a good couple of minutes, she recomposes herself, and joins Eridas in watching Cass work on the Void Hawk, deeply curious and wanting to jump in, but keeping a respectful distance.
I'll have to ask him about that later, maybe he can show me around it"
Kate grabs the last lantern and the remaining flares and glowbugs from the box after everyone else has had a chance at the supplies, and takes a moment to organize her backpack.
"Yeah, we're just doing our jobs." Kate echoes after Tess.
"Aye aye, Captain." She tries to keep her tone casual when responding to Hikaru, but it's a struggle to not salute at the captain's orders.
Once more, into the breach.

With everyone ready, you file back into the elevator, with Cass firing up the Void Hawk. You ride the elevator down back into the mines in silence, as you prepare yourself for what might lie in wait.
As the elevator comes to a halt, the void hawk rises up off the floor. The doors open and the light from your lanterns and the voidhawk's built it spotlight spill out illuminating the bloody scene before you. While two of the xenoforms lay dead next to the bodies of the dead pirate and Anderson, you eyes are immediately drawn to another of the creatures which appears to be feasting on the remains of Anderson.

Creed, while waiting for the elevator, did a last check of his equipment. As the elevator gets to the bottom he takes a deep breath and holds his spike thrower with a bit more confidence than last time. As the doors open and he sees the next one, he lets out a small groan, but knows this is his chance to make up for losing control last time.

As you unleash a hail of bullets, mag flechettes and laser fire onto the xenform, it screeches at you and charges forward as you blow holes it its carapace. Hikaru's laser beam scythes through the creature. Its flesh sizzles and burns, as the high energy beam cuts its head clean off and the monstrosity falls to the floor dead.

Cass sighs in relief as the monstrosity — and its cloven head — fall to the cave floor. "Damn, Glitter. Hell of a shot."
He casts a worried glance over at Eridas as he pilots the drone ahead cautiously. "You good, beratna?"

Eridas winces in pain, holding his wound. He wasn't expecting it to rush at him like that... He sighed softly, beginning to cry a bit as he tried to hold himself together. "Fuck." He says, before igniting the lantern he has at his waist now. "G-good shot!" He calls back to the others, not really sure who killed it.
Posted: Sat Oct 28, 2023 1:25 pm

Hikaru's mouth drops open as he watches the beam slice the monster's head cleanly off. "Holy shit," he mutters under his breath, flabbergasted at the shot. "Thanks, guess I'm better at this thing than I thought." He gives somewhat of a proud smile, taking a quick breather. "Kay, let's let the drone do the scouting now, yeah?"
Posted: Sun Oct 29, 2023 2:22 pm
by Fialova
"You're a natural," Tess responds to her friend's comment. "And yeah, let the drone go in. No reason for us to search while that thing is here." Hopefully there aren't any more of those things, but what are the chances of that?

"Don't have to tell me twice," Cass says, already piloting the voidhawk forward into the cavern. "Gonna take it slow, make sure I don't miss anything."
He turns it toward the left, hoping to begin scouting the tunnels in a roughly clockwise fashion based on the map provided by the corpos. Any more of you vicious, ugly bugs from hell?
Posted: Sun Oct 29, 2023 3:30 pm
by Namelessjake
The voidhawk disappears down the tunnel as Cass carefully and methodically begins its search of the tunnels. As it nears what would have been the bottom right of the map provided by the miners, you notice the first differences to what you would expect to see. Here there are clear signs of recent excavation, most likely by the crew of the
Kyo Maru.
The tunnel has been dug a few metres deeper, unearthing a structure of some kind. It is a smooth curved wall of a different stone or material to the surrounding tunnel, it appears to bear the marks of further attempts at excavation although, beyond the slight scarring, such attempts appear to have been in vain.
Posted: Sun Oct 29, 2023 4:09 pm

"Hey, check this out," Cass says, stepping over to the others to show them the view panel on the void hawk's control unit. "This must be what those pirates were after... what they thought that pyramid map was pointing to."
He stares at the screen, squinting at the pixels to try and force shape and understanding onto what he's seeing. "What you do you think it is? Pretech ruins? Buried all the way down here, too."
The fuck have we gotten wrapped up in, here? he considers, feeling particularly rattled.
Posted: Sun Oct 29, 2023 6:04 pm
by greysigil
"Hell of a shot, Captain. Got a trophy if you want it now." Kate says with a smile. "So what's the play now? Hunker down here until we get the whole--" She cuts off her own thought when Cass mentions finding something, moving to let him come closer. "Pretech? Mind if I take a look?" She asks, barely covering the excitement in her voice.
Posted: Mon Oct 30, 2023 6:10 pm
by Scratcherclaw
"Mess might be a little small to mount that in," Hikaru says to Kate, cracking a smirk. Cass directing to the screen pulls his attention away from his marksmanship, however, and he raises his eyebrow at the findings. "The hell would it be doing down here, on a backwater rock in space? And how do the xenos tie in? Guards or some crap?"
Posted: Tue Oct 31, 2023 7:07 pm
by FinalTemplar
Eridas listens to the ongoing conversation, highly intrigued by the talk of pretech but he stayed away. No point crowding around. I'll see it when I see it he thinks to himself, keeping watch for new threats.
Posted: Wed Nov 08, 2023 12:11 pm
by Fialova
"Whatever it is, we should wait until we're sure this place is clear of this bugs before we take a closer look," Tess responds. Pretech is interesting, definitely, but we still have a job to do first. And I'd rather not get any more needles flying my way.
Posted: Thu Nov 09, 2023 9:09 am
by ratwizard
"Yeah, of course," Cass says, nodding vigorously as he peers down at the drone control screen.
"The last thing I want while poking around some cryptic bullshit is another one of those bugs boxing us in. Sit tight while I sweep the rest of the tunnels."
Cross-referencing the map from Ayodele, the tech continues his exploration of the excavations via voidhawk.
Doing a full sweep, do we see anything else of interest?
Posted: Thu Nov 09, 2023 5:25 pm
by Namelessjake
Cass pilots the void hawk onwards as he continues the reconnoitre of the tunnel system. It is only a couple of tunnels later where you find further evidence of the pirate's mining activities. Directly ahead of you, with the drone using its spotlights to illuminate what had previously been shrouded in darkness, you can see that another of the strange walls has been unearthed.
However this time it appears the pirates were successful in breaching the wall itself and an opening has been made, leading into, a dark corridor.
Posted: Thu Nov 09, 2023 7:29 pm
by ratwizard
"Oh, shit," Cass breathes as the excavated opening comes into view on the screen.
"They, uh, found a way inside whatever that wall was."
The tingle in his arm reminds him of the task at hand.
"Let me finish the sweep, first."
Doors and corners, he remembers from his military training.
Cass will continue sweeping the rest of the tunnels, specifically the west side, until they are safe to move forward.
Posted: Thu Nov 09, 2023 8:38 pm
by Namelessjake
It takes a couple of minutes to scout out the remaining tunnels, but you find no further differences with the map provided by the Asteria miners. Satisfied you haven't missed anything, you regroup closer to the opening in the wall.
Posted: Fri Nov 10, 2023 12:38 pm
by ratwizard
Anxiety builds in Cass' chest as they near the excavated wall. "Right, here goes nothing," he says as he pilots the Makkuro's drone inside. "Guessing this is where those fucking bugs came from. We should be ready for more."
Posted: Fri Nov 10, 2023 9:24 pm
by Fialova
"Hopefully we've already gotten them all," Tess responds, curious to see what is inside, but not at all eager to face off against more alien creatures. Whatever those pirates were doing, let's just hope we've dealt with all the leftover nuisances.

At Cass' behest, the voidhawk moves into the mysterious pretech structure. It glides a short distance down the corridor before in arrives at a junction. Directly ahead the passage appears to have collapsed over the centuries, while the path also splinters off to the right. To the drone's left, another passage runs a short distance where it ends at a door of some kind. The door is smooth, much like the walls around it, with no obvious means of opening it, however it appears to be made of a different material to the walls and recessed slightly from the wall itself.
The dried out remains of a purple substance stretch from beneath the door and along the corridor floor in several tendril like patterns, as if the substance had oozed out of the space behind the door some time ago.
Posted: Fri Nov 10, 2023 10:51 pm
by ratwizard
"Looks like the hallway branches out," Cass reports, letting the others have a peek as he operates.
"Got a door on the left. Some kind of... purple shit leaking out." He squints, looking closer at the screen.
"The fuck is that?"
Int/Know, to determine if the dried substance appears to be biological in origin, possibly xenoblood. Or any typical substance that he might know from his university classes in chemistry and bio:
Know/Int: [2d6+1]=5+1=6

You are fairly confident that you can rule out the substance being blood of some kind, although with xenos it can be hard to rule out anything 100%.
As for what else it could be, you find it hard to narrow anything down through the screen. A close look such as a detailed sample analysis would probably give you enough information to jog your memory, if your past knowledge does indeed apply.
Posted: Fri Nov 10, 2023 10:58 pm

"Doesn't look like blood. At least, it doesn't match those bugs back there." He pilots the drone to the other branch to see what it might contain.

The void hawk glides forwards the few metres to the next offshoot of the corridor. Its camera and spotlight swivel to reveal a kinked corridor that leads to another door, although the strange substance is absent from this one.

Cass continues navigating the void hawk around the tangle of corridors, his eyes focused on anything out of the norm — or dangerous. What even is this place? And how long does it go?

The void hawk navigates the corridor although it reaches the door only a couple of seconds later. From the display on the drone controller's screen there appears to be no mechanism by which to open the door.

"Uh, another door," Cass reports. "We'll have to move in on foot from here." He looks expectantly at the others, hardly eager to be the first into the mysterious, ancient hallways.

"Well, Scout was helpful, but yeah, without a way to remote open it, that's our cue." Kate says, her voice a mixture of excitement and trepidation. "I am curious about that purple stuff in the other corridor, want a closer look, but in the interest of sticking together, I'll stay with you guys."
She looks to the rest of the group, "So, who's taking point?"

"Just keep your guns ready and try not to touch too much," Hikaru says, gritting his teeth as they're forced to move beyond the safety of the drone's monitor. He shrugs at Kate, adding, "Can't say any of us have been quite in this situation, but Tess sure knows how to carry herself, and won't get squeamish at the sight of sticky goo." He flashes her a cheeky smirk, gesturing her forward. Then again, would any of us? He grimaces, recalling Tess and Cass's less than subtle aftermath days prior. Least it'll get him to chill a bit.

Creed follows along, realizing after a moment that he has zoned out once again - coming back to reality, Creed takes in their surroundings, and clocks in on the conversation; "I think Tess should, though I'd be right behind..." Creed grimaced. "As we've found out, I can't really take a hit, but I can punch a hole through them." He says, ready to move forward toward it.

"Squeamish? Of course not. I should have some spare tissues in my pack," Tess responds to her friend, returning his grin with one of her own. As the others all offer her up as the point person, she shrugs and begins to step forward.
"Sure, I'll do it. But if one of those things comes out the door, I'm ducking. Hope your reflexes are good, Creed," she continues, lightly patting the man on the back as she steps by him and further into the strange structure ahead.
Tess will make her way to the end of the first branch and slightly into the tunnel the void hawk is in, but stop to allow Kate to inspect the goo if she wants.

"Remember, we can always back out if shit gets too dangerous. It's only ten kilocred, not worth getting killed over," Cass reminds his companions as he follows along. Piloting his drone, he has it retreat from the door on the left, back toward the door on the right to serve as a physical shield.

You head into the pretech ruins regrouping with the voidhawk by the first corridor and near to the strange substance.
Know/Int to examine the substance more closely. Also the same for further information on the ruins themselves (I think it was Grey who wanted to do this?).

Kate follows the group, examining the walls of the ruins as she walks, until she reaches the first junction.
"Wow, I wonder how old this place is. Seems to be in good condition, but who knows what it looks like farther in." She says quietly as she walks.
She watches the void kawk hover for a moment, before moving up behind it to crouch down and get a closer look at the dried goo on the floor.

Cass idles his drone in the air, looking up from the screen momentarily to take a good peek around.
"Shit, I dunno. Might be looking at Golden Age history right here. How else would it be buried this far down?"

Creed shuddered a little bit and looked around at the architecture, trying to hold his composure.

"This far down and on a rock this size," Hikaru says, uneasily looking at their surroundings and keeping his rifle close. "Why here of all places?" Broke off something bigger maybe?
