The time has finally come, the 23rd Leone, the date you'd marked in your calendar months before after receiving your invitation. The Midnight Masquerade at Chateau Dupuis is finally here. You don your finest attire and, of course, your mask before heading to the Rue St. Guillaume, eager to spend the evening dancing and mingling with the crème de la crème of Ellisport's high society. Who will you meet? What relationships will you forge? One can only guess.

Despite the name, the event actually begins earlier in the evening. The gates first open to guests shortly after 10pm, though it is never fashionable to be the first to arrive. The first trickle in around 10:30, and most others begin to show around 10:45-11. Can't be too late, though, for the real fun begins at midnight when the twins are set to make their first appearance.

[sblock=OOC]This game begins slightly differently than most of our others in that the group does not begin together and will not interact with one another immediately. Your first IC post should include your roleplaying your character's arrival to the party, and what time this happens (between 10:30 and 11:30, roughly). Feel free to roleplay what they did earlier in the day to prepare for the outing, and make sure to include their +1 in your post if your character is bringing anyone with them.

Upon arrival to the Masquerade, they will be introduced as one might expect at such an affair. From then you will be able to mingle with the other guests on your own for a bit, who will vary based on when you arrive and who you are.

Either IC or OOC in your post, make sure to have some sort of indication both to what you are wearing and what your mask is like, so that it can be referenced if necessary by NPCs.[/sblock]

Renault checks his timepiece. A hair past ten, he notes, adjusting his nondescript, dark mask. No better time than now.

Wearing a heavy, dark leather duster that covers most of his frame, he wears a belted, wide-brimmed hat that obscures most of his head. Renault walks with his usual cane, making his way into the venue without calling much attention to himself. He stakes himself to the edges and shadows where possible, preferring the solace of silence while he watches the other partygoers interact.

And he waits for his quarry.

He'll be here.

Jacques, lounging upon a chaise, rereads the invitation in his hand. Might as well start getting ready. Adrienne won't want show up too late now, he thinks and he rises from his chair, glaring at his passed-out mother across the room. She won't even know we're gone. That pinot noir will make sure of it. Sighing at his mother's desolate state, he meanders his way to his bedroom.

Donning a white silk shirt and stockings, he gives himself the up-down in a mirror. A perfect outfit must start somewhere. Smirking at his reflection, he puts on black breeches and an ornate crimson-patterned vest, tucking in a cravat beneath it. Poking his head into the corridor, he shouts to his sister, "You'd best be almost ready! We don't want to miss all the best hors d'oeuvres!" Finally, he dons an elaborate black coat with gold trimmings, a personal favorite of his collection. Finally, he pulls an intricate mask from a drawer. Invitation in hand and arm-in-arm with his sister, the St. Claire pair makes their way to the ball.

Hardly eager to be the first guests there, they stroll the promenades, arriving at Chateau Dupuis at twenty til eleven. "This will be a night to remember," he remarks to his sister, grinning in anticipation of the night ahead.

"Really? Your dress uniform?" Alicia exclaims.

"What?" Évrard says. "it;s smart isn't it?" He asks rhetrotically, as he puts the finishing touches to his outfit.

"If you're trying to meet someone you should maybe avoid saying my whole life revolves around the navy before they even have a chance to speak to you..." Alicia says, walking into Évrard's room, already fully dressed for the evening.

"Wow!"] Évrard says, referencing his younger sister's impressive outfit. "And it's the smartest thing I own. There's not much need for formal wear in the Forelle Sea...." He teases as he finishing attaching his aiguillette to his shoulder and picking up his wolf mask.

Both ready for the ball, Alicia takes Évrard's arm as he leades her to the horse drawn carriage waiting for them outside the Desrochers estate. After a short journey, the carriage pulls up outside the entrance to the ball. The carriage driver opens the door and Évrard helps Alicia down from the carriage.

"Lead on. You're the one who was actually invited, he says, donning his mask. "Yes I was, so please try not to embarrass me... Especially if Constance is here... " Alicia says taking Évrard in her arm once again and gently pushing him forward into the ball.

[sblock=Renault]"THE HONORABLE AND DEVOUT FATHER RENAULT ST. CLAIRE," comes the booming voice of the announcer, as you enter the ballroom of the Dupuis Estate. The room is wider than it is deep, and ornately decorated. Carved pillars line the walls, with large paintings and tapestries lining the walls in between. The ground is a dazzling array of tiles formed into a large mosaic of fish swimming the sea, with an outer border that is more in a checkerboard pattern.

Straight ahead you see the grand staircase, where the twins are likely to descend from at midnight when they make their appearance. Various buffet tables line the wall at the far left side of the room as you enter, with many smaller round tables for seating taking up the left quarter of the floorspace. To the right, a band of live musicians play lovely tunes, perched on top of a stage that takes a similar amount of the floorspace as the tables. In the middle, roughly half of the room, is open area for guests to dance and mingle.

You descend the short steps into what is currently a mostly empty chamber, apart from the musicians and servants that are there to serve and entertain. A few attendees can be seen helping themselves to some food, and a few others are having conversations in the middle section of the room, but other than that the room is sparse.

Moments after you step in, before you've made it past the entry steps, the voice of the announces is heard once more behind you. "THE COURAGEOUS AND MAGNANIMOUS SISTER EMELINE," it shouts, as a somewhat familiar face descends the steps behind you. Though she'd never served with you, the woman had been staying at one of the rooms at the local cathedral in preparation for this night, before eventually continuing on for her next mission in Visha. You'd not spoken much, but she does seem to recognize you as she approaches.

"Ah, Father... Renault, was it? A pleasant surprise to see another member of the clergy at this function. I'd thought I'd need to spend the entire evening trying to find common ground with aristocrats." She greets you with a smile and a slight bow as she draws near. She wears a simple mask as well, colored white, though everything else about her is easily recognizable.[/sblock]
[sblock=Jacques]Many are arriving at the same time as you and Adrienne, so there is a bit of a line to get in when you approach. As you near the entrance to the ballroom, you can hear the announcer shouting his introductions to all inside. It is not long before you finally reach the doors and step through yourself, arms locked with your sister as you do.

"THE NOBLE AND CHARITABLE ENSIGN JACQUES ST.

To the right, a band of live musicians play lovely tunes, perched on top of a stage that takes a similar amount of the floorspace as the tables. In the middle, roughly half of the room, is open area for guests to dance and mingle.

Inside the room is clearly still filling up, but there are a decent number of guests already partaking of the food, or dancing together to the music. Some hold conversations around the edges of the room while various servants rush about, providing drinks and refreshments.

Looking around, it is hard to pick out anyone in particular from various masked figures that are the other party guests. However, shortly after you enter you hear the announcer once more, giving you a few names. "THE GENEROUS AND PIOUS PRINCE DAMIUS FULSEN OF TULRISSE, AND HIS FIANCEE THE LOVELY AND BENEVOLENT PRINCESS KATARINA D'ARCANGELI."

The royal pair descend the steps, both in ornate masks - Damius' blue and feathered, while Katarina's is multicolored and shaped like a butterfly - escorted by a woman in armor with a very plain, golden mask. Some turn to watch as they arrive, but many others simply continue what they are doing. As they draw closer Katarina motions for Damius to stop, eyeing Jacques up and down. "That is a very handsome ensemble. You must know all of the best places to shop in this lovely city, don't you?" she says, giving the man a polite smile.[/sblock]
[sblock=Évrard]

Secret Shit You Know, Read First
[SHOW]

[sblock3=Seriously, Jakes Eyes Only][sblock4=I warned you...]You have an ulterior motive for being at this ball, apart from merely being your sister's +1. Through the grapevine of the Swords of Elys you've learned that one of the more hot-headed and violent members of the society, a Liutenant by the name of Hector Rainier, is planning to attend the ball. This came as an uninteresting surprise to all in the group, until they learned his motive.

Apparently Hector has learned that the Bishop of Imardin plans to make a surprise appearance at the ball, to recognize the Dupuis twins for their services to his city in the same way that the twins are recognizing their invitees. Hector has taken it upon himself to try to use this opportunity - where everyone is masked and anonymous - to try to assassinate the Bishop.

Your leader, the Admiral Anselm Bouchard, has ordered you - who was already planning to attend - to keep an eye out for Hector and do all in your power to stop him. While not necessarily fond of the Bishop, he does not want to risk such an assassination causing your order to be discovered by the rest of the navy or, worse, the Apostles.[/sblock4][/sblock3]

The pair of you arrive at the estate around 11pm, and it is clear that many others waited to come around this time as well. There is a line of carriages at the entrance, and after that a line leading into the ballroom as well. You can hear the announcer in the distance introducing the various guests, most of whom you do not recognize, though a few minutes before you reach the door you do hear mention of the famous Admiral, Felipe Depardieu.

"THE BEAUTIFUL AND COMPASSIONATE ALICIA DESROCHERS," comes the booming voice of the announcer, as you enter the ballroom of the Dupuis Estate.

Inside the room is quite full of party-goers, all masked and having a good time. Most tables near the buffet are full at this point, and much of the dance floor is already being used as well. The rim around the edge of the room still has many empty spots for people to stand and watch, though most are much more interested in the food and music.

Given the disguises - however loose they may be - it is not easy to tell who anyone is at first glance, especially with so many well-dressed figures flitting about the place. However, shortly after you enter you hear the announcer shout a name you do recognize.

"THE DILIGENT AND AMBITIOUS COMMODORE CANDICE ROSSO," comes the voice from behind, as the subject of Évrard's envy descends the stairs. She wears a flowing red dress and a white mask featuring a large rose made of cloth towards one side, partially serving as a corsage. As she nears, she looks you up and down, raising an eyebrow as she does. "A navy uniform would not be my first pick for such an event," she says, glancing to Alicia in expectation of agreement. "Your man is certainly quite proud of his station," she adds.[/sblock]

"Doesn't an announcer rather defeat the point of a masquerade?" Évrard remarks while the siblings wait in line.

"Stop being facetious," Alicia replies, giving her brother a light slap on the arm.

If I'd known there'd be an announcer I would have pushed to arrive earlier. It would make locating the Lieutenant much easier knowing when he arrived.

Once inside Évrard begins to scan the room but quickly gives up, deciding there's little chance of identifying anyone from a distance. On hearing Candice's name mentioned he can't help but grit his teeth slightly.

Alicia laughs politely at the Commodore's remarks, although stays quiet, knowing her Brother's opinion of the woman.

"Well Commodore, I believe there's nothing anyone could be more proud of than a life devoted in service to the Goddess," Évrard says in retort. "Would you not agree?" He adds, raising an eyebrow of his own, knowing Candice will likely have placed his voice.

Jacques raises an eyebrow and smirks as he and his sister enter the ornate ballroom. "Well they've certainly pulled out all stops for this. A night to remember indeed," he says to Adrienne, reiterating what he had said as they arrived.

"I just hope mother will be alright on her own. Goddess knows she hates to be alone," Adrienne replies, nervously thinking of their mother's sullen state.

"She'll be fine," he remarks reassuringly. "You're at the party of the year. Enjoy yourself! Mingle and have fun!"

Her worrying face replaced with a beaming grin, she concedes, "You're right. Thank you." Overhearing the announcer's booming voice, she adds, giddily, "Sounds like the Prince and Princess of Tulrisse just arrived! And they're coming this way!"

Jacques' eyes widen as Katarina approaches, stopping to compliment his attire. His mind races with several simultaneous thoughts at once. What's the proper way to address her? Should I bow? Is my face red? Taking a breath and grinning brightly, he replies, "Thank you, your highness," slightly bowing but not committing to a full bow. "All the best tailors know me by name," he adds with a light chuckle. "You look stunning as well! And Prince Damius, might I say you look positively dashing."

Renault winces as the announcer's voice bellows throughout the wide chamber. I suppose it is early, he reasons, doing his best to avoid the gaze of the few people who'd arrived before him. My cover should remain relatively intact.

The clergyman studies the room for a moment as he steps inside, ignoring the beautiful architecture and live music, choosing instead to note all exits, entrances, and make mental notes of those present. His thoughts are interrupted by the call of the next guest behind him.

Turning, Renault catches the eye of a familiar face. Without much choice he watches as the woman approaches. "Sister Emeline," he greets her, offering her a nod and stepping clear of the entryway. The hint of a grin pokes under the bottom of his mask at her disdain for the aristocracy. "A pleasant surprise indeed. It appears that we've walked the same path, but upon different sides of it." Renault points to his matte black mask, then to her own. "How are you this eve?"

[sblock=Évrard]The woman smirks, then chuckles, a rare break in her cold exterior. "I am only teasing," she responds, before lightly brushing his arm. "I'd have worn my own were it not for the dancing. Hard for a lady to dance in leather boots," she adds, tossing another knowing glance Alicia's way.

"You are Admiral Desrochers' son, are you not? Évrard, was it?" she asks, as the group of you descend further down the steps into the rapidly-filling ballroom. "And your lovely wife?" she adds, glancing over to Alicia once more. She seems much less cold than you'd remembered in the past, suggesting that her work persona may not be her true nature, though it is a bit alarming nonetheless.[/sblock]
[sblock=Jacques]"Oh, I am not truly a princess," she responds, motioning dismissively, "not until we are married, at least. You can call me Kat, everyone does," she responds with a smile.

"And you as well," responds the prince, as the group of you continue further down the stairs. "And you've a lovely wife," he adds turning towards Adrienne with a friendly smile.

"After this ball you must direct me to some of them," Kat adds, in reference to the tailors. "We will be in the city for some time afterwards, I'd love to see what this city's tailors have to offer. Can never have too large a wardrobe!"

"Yes, though we still must make time to visit the churches," Damius adds, turning to Kat. "It would be remiss of us to visit the Goddess' own nation without paying due respects at her altars," he continues.[/sblock]
[sblock=Renault]"Oh, Yes," the sister responds, nervously laughing at his remark. "In truth I did not quite know this was meant to be a masked event until this morning, so I had to find something to use on short notice. I do admit the simplicity feels right, though. How would it look if we of the clergy came dressed as elaborately as these wealthy folk?" she asks, more rhetorically then not.

"And to answer your own question, I am well. Or as well as I could expect," she says, as the two move further down into the relatively empty chamber. "To be honest, I feel a bit out of place. I am not usually one for festivities or lavish spending, but it also felt... wrong... to refuse the invitation. How fare you, sir? Father? I am not sure what I should call you," she says, continuing to seem nervous.

OOC

At first glance you do not notice other exits apart from the one you came through and the large staircase directly opposite the entrance. However, after a few moments it becomes clear that there are various semi-hidden doorways that mesh with the walls of the ballroom, masking their appearance for the sake of decor. The servants move through them every so often, bringing out more food and drink or bringing dirty dinner ware out of the room to be cleaned.

Of those present currently, you recognize few. One socialite who has long been a friend of your mother's is present, though seems uninterested by your arrival and continues her conversation with an older gentleman. Additionally, a man known to run a charitable organization that once was a major contributor towards the St Claire Orphanage can be seen drunkenly chatting up a woman half his age.

"Very true," Alicia replies the Commodore's comment on footwear.

"I am, yes. I believe we've met once or twice before, in passing at least." Évrard confirms, relaxing a little with Candice's friendliness.

"His lovely sister. Alicia Desrochers," Alicia says with a smile, correcting Candice and introducing herself. "Évrard here has yet to find a woman that interests him more than his Ship," she says, teasing her brother, who responds with an eye roll.

"Are you married Commodore?"

"Ah, my apologies then, Kat. Not often we deal with nobility here," Jacques responds to the girl with a smile. With the prince's comment, his eyes widen and face reddens.

Less shocked and noticing her brother's reaction, Adrienne can't help but begin to laugh. Regaining her composure, she remarks, "Pardon my outburst, your highness. This is my brother."

Trying to move on from the embarrassment, Jacques continues with the soon-to-be princess, "It would be my honor. Ellisport boasts some of the finest in the fashion world. Perhaps some designers will be here tonight!"

Hoping to reassure the prince into appeasing his fiancee, the vampire adds, "The most magnificent cathedrals are but a short walk from many of the shops. And it's a beautiful time of year to take a stroll around the city."

Nodding to her brother's words, Adrienne mentions, "Yes, the trees and flowers are in bloom. We have Mardul to thank for such gorgeous promenades."

Renault nods at Emeline's words. "Father is preferable," he confirms. "Or simply Renault. And yes, I share your sentiment. These situations are not quite my forte nor my usual interest. But alas, we are here." He notes the service entrances, looking past the Sister for a moment.

"I am well, by the way. My duties in the clergy have kept me quite busy as of late, but busy is happy. I'm sure you can relate."

[sblock=Évrard]"Oh, no," the woman says with a chuckle, "I've no time for marriage. I spend much too much time at sea for that. Those pirate scum won't hunt themselves, you know," she says lightheartedly, as the group of you move further down the steps and more towards the area where other guests are already dancing.

"The rare events I am able to attend make up for it, though," she adds. "A night of drinking and dancing is enough to make me forget the rigors of the navy for a time, and once it's done I have something to look forward to on my next shore visit." She moves closer to the various dancers, eyeing the two of you expectantly. "So? Would either of you care to join me?" she asks, with a bit more of a devilish grin than she'd had before.[/sblock]
[sblock=Jacques]"That all sounds so lovely," Kat says, "this city is truly wonderful. I can't wait to explore it. And I hope you can come, if you've the time," she says to Jacques and Adrienne.

"Yes, we must set up a rendezvous," Damius adds, "I'd love to discuss it more, but we do have the rounds to make. I've already seen a few faces I recognize out in the crowd, we cannot leave them waiting too long. Find us later, and we can set up a time and place to meet," he says, before he and Kat begin to walk away, their escort muscle in tow.

Before they can step away, however, another name is announced. "THE ILLUSTRIOUS AND FASHIONABLE M. LUDOVIC DURAND," booms the announcer, as the famed fashion designer steps through the large doors. He wears an elegant black tunic embroidered with interlaced vines and flowers, and a gold-trimmed black mask of a bull's head, featuring real bull's horns

He saunters down the staircase as if it was his own home he was returning to, glancing in the direction of your conversation group as he does so. Drawing close, the man looks each of you up and down. "Yes..." he says, towards Kat, "no... yes... yes..." he continues, towards Damius, Jacques, and Adrienne respectively. "You could learn a thing or two from your friends," he says to Damius, his voice not hinting at any malice despite the biting words. "If you'd like, I could offer you some pointers after the ball," the man finishes, a wide smile on his face that only forms in his mouth.

"And you are?" Damius asks, looking a mixture of confused and annoyed. He glances from Ludovic to Jacques, as if expecting him to know the answer.

OOC
[SHOW]

You know that Ludovic is a local bourgeois who has a huge stake in the popular fashion of Ellisport. Along with his sister Angelique, Ludovic runs Durand, Durand where they ship thousands of high-quality dresses each year. Charismatic, and always smiling, Ludovic commonly gains entry to many balls and events monthly.

Though you've not met the man before, and have heard nothing about him from your contacts within the SHS, you do get a feeling based on his appearance and demeanor that he may also be a vampire.

[/sblock]
[sblock=Renault]"Yes, certainly," the woman says, before an awkward silence arises. After a moment of the silence, and noting Renault's distraction, she says, "well I am quite famished, so I will help myself to some of the food. I hope you have a good time!" before heading over to the buffet area. With her gone, you head over to a section of the wall with a good vantage point of the main entryway, ready to wait for your quarry.

Not much happens for a time, until more guests begin trickling in at around 10:30. No one of note enters until ten minutes later, however, as you hear the announcer shout, "THE NOBLE AND CHARITABLE ENSIGN JACQUES ST. CLAIRE." You see your brother and sister enter the hall, arm in arm, and make their way a short way down the stairs before the announcer bellows out, "THE GENEROUS AND PIOUS PRINCE DAMIUS FULSEN OF TULRISSE, AND HIS FIANCEE THE LOVELY AND BENEVOLENT PRINCESS KATARINA D'ARCANGELI."

You watch as the prince and princess enter and begin to descend the steps as well, a large armored woman in tow. The princess spots Jacques and a conversation begins amongst them, though you are unable to hear what it is about over the music and the various conversations taking place around you. They eventually move more towards the bottom of the steps, remaining barely within view, until eventually it looks like the royal pair are about to leave. However, another voice is then announced.

"THE ILLUSTRIOUS AND FASHIONABLE M. LUDOVIC DURAND," shouts the announcer once more, as the target of your investigation enters the room. You can see he is dressed as finally as ever, and wearing a mask featuring a bull's head design. He saunters towards your siblings and the royal couple, and appears to join in on their conversation.[/sblock]

Renault watches in trepidation as Jacques and Adrienne appear, courted immediately by the royal couple. I... He shakes his head, sighing in irritation. How am I surprised? In an event as prominent as this, it was to be sure that he would be invited. His charity work, Renault remembers.

He is surprised once again when he sees Durand enter, as extravagant as expected. Renault watches the man engage his brother, sister, and the Tulrissians for conversation. I need to get closer, without being seen, he decides.

That's hoping nobody makes the connection that three St. Claires are here and reveals me to them. The Father steps closer to try and listen in, while inconspicuously grabbing a plate and casually walking the floor.

Giving a pleasant smile to the royal pair, Jacques says, "I'd be delighted to. I could give quite the tour, though I'll have to brush up on my history first!" With the couple about to depart, he nods and adds, "Yes, we'll talk later. Enjoy the night!"

His last words fall flat as he turns his head towards the latest entry to the ball, recognizing the name of one of Ellisport's most prominent fashion icons. He remains silent as the man approaches, commenting on each of the quartet's ensembles, particularly the prince's. Noticing his demeanor, Jacques grows suspicious of Ludovic's true nature. Could it be he too is a vampire? He certainly looks older than most of us... but everything else lines up.

Shaking this thought in time for the prince's remark, Jacques replies, "This would be one of those designers I mentioned, your highness. And one of the most famous at that. Ludovic Durand." Giving the newcomer a polite smile and nod, he says, "How do you do, Monsieur Durand?"

Évrard immediately goes to decline the dance, but stops himself. There's a chance she'll know Hector Rainier, and if not she definitely has the ear of some of the admiralty, he thinks.

"Normally it takes a few more drinks before I start dancing, but why not?" He says stepping forward. "You never know, we run run into Captain Blackwood himself on the dance floor," he jokes.

"Okay... I'll go mingle and catch up with you later," Alicia says clearly a little confused my her brother's decision.

Évrard takes Candice's hand as the two join the other dancers.

"You wouldn't happen to know a Lieutenant Hector Rainier would you?" Évrard asks as the two dance. "I knew him at the academy and had heard he'd be in attendance tonight. Thought I should try and say hello if I can find him."

[sblock=Renault]It takes a little bit of maneuvering to get through the rapidly growing crowd of people to a spot that is far enough from your siblings and their new acquaintances, yet close enough to listen in. Some of the other guests give you odd looks, but ultimately pay very little mind to your stalking, instead much more interested in enjoying the evening.

As you draw nearer to them you see the prince and princess begin to walk away, though they stop and rejoin the conversation shortly after. The prince initially looks annoyed by the famed designer, but seems to warm up as he talks.

OOC
[SHOW]

Since you rolled so well on both stealth and perception, no one from the conversation detects you eavesdropping. You can also read the combat block for Jacques below to listen in on their conversation.

[/sblock]
[sblock=Jacques]"As I please," the Durand says with a smirk, turning to face Jacques. "I jest, of course," he continues. "I am well, though quite parched. I will have to get someone to fetch me a drink, if one of the servants comes near," he adds, looking around a bit. However, he quickly turns his head back towards Damius, as if noting something he had not seen before.

"Your highness, you say?" he says, towards Jacques, though still facing the prince. "Apologies for my earlier rudeness, I'd not have been so critical had I known I was in the presence of royalty. Are you the famed prince of Tulrisse I've heard so much about?" he asks, seeming a bit more jovial than he had before despite no apparent change in his expression.

"It's fine, you'd not be the first to criticize my attire," he says, nudging Kat playfully.

"I really do try to give him pointers, but he doesn't always listen," she says with a chuckle. "M. Durand, I'd love to see more of your work. If it's anything like your current attire, I'm sure I'd be impressed by the rest. We were actually all planning to check out the various fashion shops soon, weren't we Jacques," she says, turning towards you and Adrienne.[/sblock]
[sblock=Évrard]"I should hope not," Candice responds regarding Blackwood. "I'd hoped to relax this evening, and encountering that man would put a damper on the mood entirely," she adds. As Alicia departs she gives the woman a polite wave, before following Évrard to the dance floor.

Many are waltzing already, and it takes a moment before an opening appears for you to move onto the floor. Once you get going Candice seems pleased to be on her feet. However, at your question her expression turns more to one of confusion.

"You have a beautiful young woman in your arms, on the dance floor, and your first thought is to discuss work colleagues?" she asks incredulously. "And people tell me I am too focused on my work," she continues with a laugh. She pauses for a moment to do one of the twirls required of her, before returning to your side.

"No, I can't say I know the name," she continues. "A friend of yours? Do you think he'd have more interesting in dancing?" she asks, giving you a light-hearted smirk.[/sblock]

"Just a thought that crossed my mind. More of an acquaintance too than a friend, so unfortunately I can't speak much to his dancing," Évrard says returning the smirk, as the two continue. Well I suppose that would have been too easy, he thinks to himself.

"If not work, what would you rather discuss?" He asks, trying to change the subject, as the pair continue to dance. "What does the famous Commodore Russo do when she's not hunting down pirates in the Forelle Sea?"

"Perhaps we might find a signature style for you while you're visiting. Surely the cathedrals won't take up all your time," Jacques remarks toward the prince as Kat and Ludovic discuss his fashion sense. Nor should they. Once you see a few, you've seen them all.

"And the summer will be upon us soon enough. Perhaps one of the new fashions will strike your fancy," Adrienne adds, thinking fondly of the brighter colors and cooler designs the warm months bring about. I'm so tired of sweating every time I go out. Who ever thought so many layers was a good idea?

With the royal fiancee once more mentioning their post-ball plans, Jacques replies, "That we were, Kat. Perhaps M. Durand has some suggestions." Turning towards the man, he adds, "Or perhaps he'd like to join us."

Treading the ever-present topic of fashion once again, Renault sighs to himself. Sister Emeline was right. This entire event reeks of the droll obsessions of the aristocracy. He maintains his focus on Durand, though he fears this evening will consist of a lot of investigation for little reward.

If he truly is the Moon Prince, then he'll be brought to justice for his crimes against mortalkind. He adjusts his mask, conscious of its fit. If. It hurts him to see his kin in the presence of such a monster, but he dares not reveal himself.

[sblock=Évrard]"Hm, well mostly hunting down pirates in other seas," she says with another smirk, before entering into another twirl. The waltz continues to ramp up a bit, making an ovular shape around the dance floor, and you now find yourself closer to the stage the musicians are playing on than you'd been before.

"I kid," she says, as you pull her back to your side. "Apart from balls and paperwork, mostly exercise or hiking. There are some gorgeous sights to see out in the wilderness, and the risk of bandits isn't much of a risk when you're a trained soldier," she adds.

"And how about you, famous son of a more famous admiral? What do you do to pass your time on land, apart from escorting your lovely sister around?"[/sblock]
[sblock=Jacques, Renault if still eavesdropping]"Sadly I do have a full docket tomorrow, and most days to be honest," the designer says, "though if you happen upon my own studio I'm sure I'd be able to take some time out of my day to show you around," he says, looking around the room a bit once more. He seems to spot something or someone, as he quickly turns back to the others and finishes with, "but I am quite parched, so I will have to discuss this more later, if you would excuse me."

With that he quickly heads towards the section of the room with the food and drink, still sauntering, though more quickly than before. Damius turns back to the two of you, looking a bit confused once more, but saying, "yes, and we have the rounds to make still. We should talk more this evening, as I said. We can arrange our plans in more detail once we've had time to meet with everyone," he says, beginning to walk away as well. Kat follows along, arm-in-arm with her fiance, though turns back to say, "à tout à l'heure," before moving too far away.

Feel free to now wander around the party, or let me know if there is a specific known attendee you'd like to seek out and roll for perception if so. Otherwise, just RP what Jacques and Adrienne would do next once the other three go off on their own.

[sblock=Renault]After Durand parts ways from your siblings, he heads directly for one of the servants passing out drinks and grabs one. He quickly drinks the entire glass of wine and winces a bit, before handing the man back the empty glass. He then proceeds further towards the buffet area, entering a short line of party-goers queued up to grab their food.

"I don't know about famous, " Évrard says. "Well I quite like to hunt. Although truth be told I think I'm more at home at sea than on the land. There are a lot of events, family or otherwise, I'm obligated to attend when I'm in port. Especially now Mother is a Bishop, he says, surprising himself with how much he is opening up to Candice and enjoying their dance. She's had her sights set on the admiralty for a long time. She's probably just trying to make friends with an admiral's son, he thinks, trying to explain her friendliness.

"Did I not say it would be a night to remember?" Jacques says to his sister as their new friends depart, a smirk across his face.

"I never thought I'd actually get to meet royalty!" Adrienne replies, still giddy from their encounter. "Now I just need to find a prince for myself. Do you suppose Damius has a single brother?"

Laughing at his sister's fantasy suggestion, he adds, "I wouldn't count on it. But maybe we can find you a handsome, single, baron."

"Make it a duke and you've got yourself a deal," Adrienne remarks, returning a devilish grin which fades into a giggle. "Now why don't we take a look at that food you were so excited about."

Licking his lips in anticipation for the delicacies ahead, Jacques begins leading his sister towards the buffet tables. "Now there's an offer I can't refuse." I may not need to eat to live anymore, but I certainly live to eat.

Renault keeps his eyes on Durand, noticing his downed wine and his eagerness to eat. What other vices are you facing, Ludovic? Are you who my brothers say you are?

He overhears his siblings discussing food, and the priest feels his own stomach rumble. As different as I am from these aristocrats, hunger knows all. I should grab a plate, as well. He waits while a few others have piled into the line including his siblings, before queuing up himself. While he waits, the Father stands watch.

[sblock=Évrard]"Hunting, huh? Very manly of you," Candice responds, a hint of sarcasm in her voice. "If you are so sick of events, what compelled you to attend this one?" she asks, sounding more genuinely quizzical than sarcastic. Before you are able to respond, however, you hear the announcer shout the name you'd been waiting for since you arrive.[/sblock]
[sblock=Jacques]As the two of you make your way towards the buffet area, you find that the line has grown some. It takes about 5 minutes minutes before you are able to actually to approach the tables, which are filled with an assortment of roast birds, roast vegetables, meat pastries, and multiple different kinds of soup. The final table has an array of pastries and tarts, each one more delectable-looking than the last. By the time you've made your choices and found an empty table, another 5 or so minutes has passed.

The two of you sit and converse lightly while you eat, until another 15 minutes or so after you seat you hear the announcer shout a name you did not expect to hear at this event...[/sblock]
[sblock=Renault]It is not difficult for you to approach closer to the eating area without being too conspicuous. It takes roughly 10 minutes before Durand finally has food and a place to sit. You notice his plate does not hold many items, nor does he seem to get another drink to go along with his meager meal. Despite the size of his dish, though, he eats at it quite slowly.

As he eats, numerous people approach him, seeming to know who he is, though he seems to mostly shoo them away after brief introductions, and no one else comes to share his table. You watch very little happen for another 15 minutes or so, before the announcer shouts a name you were not expecting to hear this evening...[/sblock]

"HIS MOST HONORABLE AND HOLY, BISHOP GÉRAUD OF ELLISPORT" comes the announcement from the entrance, as the ballroom rapidly fades into silence. A few gasps can be heard from various guests as most have now turned to face the newest arrival to the party, including the dancers and musicians.

The man wears a large, ornamented set of robes that cover most of his body, and a mask that covers the entirety of his face. He gives the now-gawking guests a polite wave as he begins to slowly descend the stairs. Murmurs begin to fill the silence as he does so, and within a moment the musicians begin to play once more. The dancers mostly remain still facing the man, however, still too shocked by the appearance to continue their merriment.

"By the Goddess, have you ever tasted something so good?" Adrienne remarks as she takes another bite of a chocolate-strawberry pastry, her eyes widened by the delectable flavors.

Sampling a bite for himself, Jacques replies, "Do you think our chefs could get the recipe from these chefs? I'd pay for it if it meant getting to eat this every day!"

The pair's small talk is cut short as the booming voice of the announcer causes heads to turn towards the door. "The Bishop? What is he doing here?"

Not missing a beat and with a smirk across his face, Jacques retorts, "Well I'd imagine he received an invitation." This invites a playful whack from his sister before they continue to watch the Bishop continue his entrance.

"You don't turn down an invitation from the Dupuis twins, even as a plus one, " Évrard says, although he trails off as he gear's the Bishop's name. There he is. Hopefully it'll be easy to find the Lieutenant now. He'll likely stick fairly close to the Bishop, he thinks.

"Well that's an interesting announcement," he says to Candice. "That mask might be a bit much though," he adds quietly as a thought crosses his mind. A mask that covers the persona that well... Who's to say that even is the Bishop...

Renault eats sparingly at the plate of food he selected for himself, watching Durand the entire time. He seems to eat and drink very little. Though this is not by itself a damning detail.

The Father keeps an eye toward his brother and sister, finding them seated nearby, chatting. I won't be able to hide myself for long. I'll have to speak with them eventually.

As the Bishop arrives and is introduced by the announcer, Renault's head snaps toward the man. Him? Here? This is a surprise.

At the base of the stairs, his holiness crosses the dance floor towards the other staircase leading to the upper floors of the estate. He begins to ascend it, but stops at a landing where the stairs turn in another direction. There he turns back to face the gathered guests, motioning for one of the servants in the room to come to him. The servant rushes up, listens to a whispered command, and quickly returns down the steps. Moments later the same servant ascends the stairs with one of the chairs from the eating area, placing it on the landing for the Bishop to sit. Once seated, he simply gazes down at the others.

After the initial shock of his presence wears off, the rest of the guests slowly start to return to the merriment they'd been enjoying before. The dancers begin to move again, with the orchestra fully back to their concert. Conversations begin to continue once more, and those that had paused their meals to gaze on continue to savor their dishes.

In addition to the other activities, however, a number of guests do begin to approach the man. It is hard to know if they simply wish to converse with the Bishop, to offer prayers, seek guidance, or issue complaints, but a small line starts to form along the second staircase leading up to his makeshift throne.

[sblock=Évrard]Candice watches on as the Bishop makes his entrance and moves through the room, in stunned silence like most of the others. Her face shows a mix of genuine confusion and concern, though in time that fades as it does for the others.

Turning back to Évrard, she responds, "Oh, you're one to talk. A wolf?" She laughs a bit, before continuing, "it is a bit strange, though. There are a few clergy here, sure, but the Bishop of Imardin himself? Hard to imagine why he'd accept an invitation to something like this. He's never been one for ceremony." She continues to dance as the rest of the dancers do, though she does occasionally glance up towards where the bishop sits, now seeming more distracted than she had been before.[/sblock]
[sblock=Renault]You know that Bishop Géraud is a true model of Elysian morals. He is a known critic of the Church's history of conquest, believing it directly counters the message of peace that the Goddess originally taught to Elys and, through her, to others. He is also known to butt heads with the admiralty of the navy for similar reasons, which has resulted in a decent amount of political tension in the city over the years, given that Fort Ellis is the nation's naval headquarters.

He is generally a very reserved and pious man, one who tends to eschew extravagance and ceremony when he can get away with it. While this has earned him the respect of many who share his views on the teachings of Elys, it has also caused some resentment among some of the aristocracy, and those who value tradition. It also makes it seem a bit odd that he would attend a ball, even one devoted towards honoring do-gooders such as this one.[/sblock]

"Should we... get in line?" Adrienne asks, glaring at the growing line of guests who wish to speak to the Bishop.

Jacques shakes his head at the suggestion, remarking, "And spend the greatest night of the year in a line? Not a chance." His eyes wandering over towards the Bishop, he adds, "Besides, his mask is unsettling to say the least."

Her eyes growing concerned, she says, "It really is a tad ominous. Why would such a kind man wear such a thing?"

Shrugging at her question, the vampire replies, "That I can't say, but we shouldn't spend the night worrying about it. Shall we dance instead?" Jacques rises from the table and begins leading his sister toward the dance floor.

With a disliking for both the posh, aristocratic culture plaguing Ellisport and the near-limitless naval conquest from his countrymen, Renault has often looked up to the Bishop with shared sentiments. He joins the line, hoping to offer a brief word to the man who he had only met in passing a handful of times.

Taking his eyes off Durand for a moment, the Father steps toward the end of the queue, adjusting his mask once more to ensure its fit. He must have a reason for coming here.

"I thought it was rather apt," Évrard says continuing to dance with Candice. "Very strange," Évrard agrees as he too looks up briefly at the Bishop and the line forming before him.

Not a single guard, Évrard notes mentally. Not that there's much of a threat at a party like this, as far as they should be aware, but you'd expect at least one or two as a formality. There's something quite strange about this appearance.

"Thinking of making a confession?" He asks jokingly, noticing her glancing up at the Bishop

[sblock=Jacques]As you are approaching the dance floor, the music changes from a rather upbeat waltz to a very slow, romantic dance. You notice a few people leaving the dance floor around this time, including one finely dressed woman in red, headed towards the buffet as you are coming from it.

As you dance, you notice that on the other end of the dance floor is a couple that seems to be having a heated, yet quiet, argument with one another during the dance. Not far from you, you notice a couple who dance together but the man continues to eye your way, seeming more interested in you than his date. The date, you notice, is instead mostly focusing her attention towards the Bishop. You also spot the royal couple you'd met earlier dancing, their bodyguard you've yet to interact with spotted off to the side, paying close attention to the pair.[/sblock]
[sblock=Renault]As you approach the end of the line, you notice it has now grown to around a dozen or so people. In front of you some of the others in line talk amongst themselves, though most are silent in their anticipation of meeting the Bishop. One member of the line, however, stands out to you.

A few people ahead is a man with mid-length blond hair and a long, somewhat-worn overcoat that seems less like attire for a fancy ball and more like everyday wear of someone who is subject to the elements on a regular basis. His body language suggests he is a bit nervous, and he regularly glances around the room, as if expecting to be watched. On these occasions you notice that the mask he's chosen only covers half of his face, with the other half featuring stubble and striking blue eyes.[/sblock]
[sblock=Évrard]As you glance towards the forming line, you notice the back of a head that looks familiar to you. Mid-length blond hair, a long, somewhat-worn overcoat that is reminiscent of what you yourself wear when out to see. You can't be too sure from behind, but it certainly strikes you as likely that you've finally spotted Hector. The man in question is towards the end of the still-forming line, around the base of the steps, approximately 8 people away from the Bishop.

Candice turns back to you, a serious look fading back into a slight smile at his remark. "No, no," she responds, "just a bit shocked. Not only at his presence, but at how many people have now decided to ignore the festivities in favor of lining up to speak to His Holiness. It is not as if the man is unapproachable outside of this place."

As the current song dies down and the orchestra begins to play one that is a bit more slow-paced, she turns to you and says, "well I'm quite hungry, and I'm sure the good food won't last long, so I'm heading over to the buffet. Thanks for the dance, we'll have to do it again sometime." She begins to walk away, before turning back for a moment to add, "and tell your lovely sister that she's welcome to dance too." After that she turns back and continues heading towards the buffet area.[/sblock]

"Oh, would you relax? It's just dancing!" Adrienne replies, rolling her eyes at her brother's worries. "Let's just try to enjoy it. Unlike those two arguing over there."

"Looks like someone else isn't enjoying their date too. He's got his eyes right on me," Jacques says, glancing back at the man, returning a smirk and a wink. Perhaps he'll ditch his date and come this way.

Trying to share an inconspicuous glance but failing in doing so, Adrienne replies, "Do you suppose he's got a friend for me?"

There you are. I doubt you're planning to engage in some harmless small talk. He thinks as he spots the Lieutenant queuing up to talk with the Bishop.

"Until next time Commodore," Évrard says giving Candice a quick informal salute with his index finger as she turns to leave. He waits a couple of moments until she is is further away before he sets off through the crowd. He heads towards the bottom of the stairs, walking slightly faster than normal but not fast enough to arouse suspicion, making polite apologies as he weaves his way around and through groups of party goers.

Reaching the back of the queue, he moves to push past those queuing behind Hector. "Excuse me, please. I'm not cutting ahead, I just need to have a quick word with a friend in the queue up ahead," he says, hoping to avoid any protests from the back of the queue.

With no resistance presented, Évrard makes his way through the queue until he is behind Hector. "Hector! Good to see you!" He exclaims, clapping the man on the shoulder, which he takes a firm grasp of. "Mind if we have a quick word? [sblock=Évrard]As you draw nearer, unimpeded (though scoffed at by many), you notice that the man you spotted appears somewhat nervous and is glancing around the room. He sees you coming when you are merely feet away, and inches away as you approach, but ultimately is unable to get out of the line before you greet him.

"Ah... Évrard... Good to see you, how've you been?" he responds to the greeting. "I, uh, sure," he responds, at the invitation to chat. He tries to resist being funneled down the stairs initially, and shifts his shoulder a bit, but once he realizes that Évrard does not intend to release his grip he complies and stumbles forward reluctantly.

OOC
[SHOW]

The party is quite crowded, but if you wanted to speak to him more privately you do notice that there is space where the staircase meets the wall and forms a corner, where no one is standing. It is slightly out of sight of the party, but still very open. There is also space near the base of the stage, a buffer zone between the performers and the dance floor. It would be very loud, which is why it is empty, but it is the only other spot that is really empty at this time.

[/sblock]
[sblock=Renault]The more you glance of the man's attire, the less he seems dressed for a party but merely for everyday travel. Nothing he wears appears expensive or high quality, but more meant for protection and basic covering. His boots, while mostly clean, are quite worn-looking. His tunic has various small rips and cuts that have clearly been sewn back together before, and you notice that underneath he appears to have some leathers as well. Additionally, you do notice that he appears to be armed, though he is far from the only guest to have a basic weapon on them at the time.

The man who'd been pushing past in line proceeds unimpeded by yourself or others, eventually approaching the nervous-looking man you'd been eyeing. They share some muffled words, the nervous man not seeming too pleased to see the other, before both proceed down the stairs. The nervous man appears to be doing so reluctantly, and the other appears to have a serious look on his face.[/sblock]
[sblock=Jacques]As the dancing continues, you catch more glimpses of the other dancers as well as events now unfolding on the steps leading towards the Bishop. The man pushing past the others in line appears to approach another in line, before both men leave and head back down the steps.

The man who'd been eyeing you on the dance floor continues to do so, seeming quite interested in you. His dance partner, however, could not be more distracted. As the two men head down the steps, she excuses herself from the dance floor and moves closer to the steps, though she stays far enough from the two men that neither seem aware of her presence. The date, seeming not especially upset at the loss of his partner, steps off to the side but continues to watch your own dance. The few times your eyes meet you get the sense that he'd be up for a dance.[/sblock]

Jacques' eyes light up as he sees his potential admirer now standing alone at the edge of the dance floor. His eyes moving between the man and Adrienne, he finally says, "I don't want to seem rude, but do you mind if I-"

"Oh, not at all!" Adrienne interrupts, giggling at her brother's intentions. "I'll be over by the refreshments table. Don't you forget about me!" she adds as the pair walks towards the edge of the dance floor.

Finally alone as his sister departs his company, Jacques can't get but grin. He, however, wastes no time and immediately walks up to the interested man. "Good evening, monsieur. Care for a dance?" he asks with a suggestive gaze, holding his hand out.

Renault smirks to himself, watching the nervous man hustled toward another passage by the more direct man. Wonder what he might have done to warrant that, he ponders, looking back to the front of the line.

"I'm good. Great party isn't it? Just over here,"Évrard says as he leads Hector to the gap between the stage and the dancers. Despite the openess he hopes the noise from the band will let them avoid anyone overhearing their conversation. Despite this he decides to still keep the conversation vague. "I know what you're trying to do, " he tells Hector, lowering his voice to the point where only Hector should be able to hear him. "Besides, I don't think it's even him. That mask makes it impossible to tell, " he says, hoping he can talk Hector out of it.

[sblock=Jacques]The man watches with anticipation at your approach. You cannot see it behind the mask he is wearing, but you know he is smiling. As you draw closer you get a better look at him and his attire. He wears all black with roses embroidered at various spots in silver thread. His mask, plain white, also features a rose covering one of his eyes. Behind the mask you can see his short blond hair, combed in a way that looks slightly messy.

"Well, well," he says, as you head closer and ask him to dance. "From afar I could tell you were a piece, but up close you look absolutely... delicious," he says, taking your hand following you onto the dance floor once more. At this point the slow romantic song has ended and another slow one begins, this one more somber than the other. "And who do I have the pleasure of dancing with this fine evening?" He asks, as you begin to glide around the room with the other pairs.[/sblock]
[sblock=Renault]The line moves more after the two head down the steps, and in not much time you find yourself the next to approach His Holiness. As you do, he gives you a polite nod and asks, "What can I do for you, my child?"

His question takes you by surprise. Not the words themselves, but the voice that asks them. Though you've not spoken to the Bishop too many times in the past, you do get the sense that he sounds different now than in your past interactions with the man.[/sblock]
[sblock=Évrard]"Doing? I'm not..." the man begins, as Évrard continues into his theories about the bishop. "What do you mean?" he asks, not finishing the original thought. "Who else would it be? He definitely looks like Bishop Géraud, the bastard," Hector trails off, turning to look back towards the man perched on his makeshift throne.[/sblock]

Renault hesitates a moment, taken aback by the Bishop's voice. Is this... he?

Jacques eyes the man's attire as he approaches, intrigued by his fashion choices. The roses certainly make a statement. Lucky for him, I love roses.

At the man's compliment, Jacques cannot help but blush, his paled cheeks noticeably reddening due to his condition. "Why thank you," he replies with a wide grin. "Perhaps I can indulge you in a... snack," he adds with a wink. His nerves are quickly shaken as he falls into the rhythm of the dance, seemingly whisked away to another plane.

With the man's question, Jacques remarks, "Oh, but the pleasure is all mine," smirking devilishly at his dance partner. "Jacques St. Claire. Who does that make you?"

"Think about it," Évrard says. "The full face mask and not a single guard in sight. Even at a party like this you'd expect at least one escort as a formality. They could have heard whispers and are expecting something to happen. It feels a lot like a trap to me," he explains, hoping it's enough to convince Hector.

[sblock=Renault]Thinking on it more, it certainly seems to you that this voice is different from the Bishop's real voice, enough so that the muffling from the mask should not be the culprit. You cannot garner any other information about the man before you from his demeanor, given that he is entirely covered by the mask in question, but you are now certain that it is not His Holiness.[/sblock]
[sblock=Jacques]"A St. Claire? What a surprise! Though I can't say a bad one," the man says. Though you cannot see his mouth, the change in his eyes suggests he is smiling. "You know, we've met before. I thought - nay, hoped - that my eyes did not deceive me when I glanced across the dance floor, but the Goddess was good to me and I saw the truth," he continues, looking upwards for a brief moment as he says 'the Goddess'. "I wonder, perchance, if the gentleman remembers me?" he asks, narrowing his eyes a bit as you continue your dance. His words, though eloquent, sound as if being spoken by an actor in a play more so than by a real person having a conversation.[/sblock]
[sblock=Évrard]"A... trap?" the man asks, looking back to you with a look of disbelief showing on the half of his face not covered by his mask. "How could there be a trap? I only told a handful of the Swords about this, people I thought I could trust, but clearly someone blabbed to the Admiral. But for the Bishop to know, that means someone would have to have told him..." he pauses for a moment, looking down to his feet. Lowering his voice a little, noticing that it had risen some in frustration, he adds, "do you... do you think we have a traitor?"[/sblock]

Jacques' eyes widen slightly as his companion seems to suggest that they know one another. As he scrambles to remember the man's identity, he can't help but wonder about his strange manner of speaking. Has he been rehearsing what to say to me?

"We can't rule it out," Évrard replies as his co-conspirator mentions the possibility of a traitor. "That or something else we don't know about is afoot. Either we spring a trap meant for us or we spring one meant for someone else revealing ourselves - it's too risky."

"I say we wait and see how the night plays out. We can potentially turn what ever is going on to our advantage. We just need more information," he adds after a short pause.
