Geral sighs and shakes his head.
"At night, most of the animals living in the desert come out to hunt. Snakes, scorpions, everything pretty much. Once it turns night, anything in that canyons going to be out hunting for food and water. Not to mention temperatures can drop suddenly, risk of hypothermia goes up, and exertion means your body is freezing from the sweat on your skin. Be thankful it's not the colder months yet, or else temperatures would drop to freezing. Of course though, any man that has spent a night alone without shelter will know this Eoli."

Despite his warnings though, he continues to walk with the group. The dunes are their best bet at the moment. He's spent many nights alone in the desert, preparing ambushes and watching for caravans they were hired to raid. Yet everyone thinks he's just the brutish swordsman. What fools. Few have seen the interworkings of the slave trade as much as the members of the Malachite Blades. After all, they are more often than not hired to raid slave caravans and free the men and women, harming a competitor. Sometimes they are hired to do certain assaults on wealthy slavers to create gaps in power. The Malachite Blades do have their honor, but there are times where honor must be sacrificed to save innocent lives. If killing a slave trader frees a few men, so be it. If they get paid for it, even better.

Shira trudges on behind Eoli, eager to get to their destination as soon as possible. The sooner we do this errand for the merchant, the sooner I can get back to my studies. I've no interested in petty quarreling, either, she thinks to herself. "Cleo, how did the rest of your studies go at the Library? I see you have achieved tenancy," she asks.

Cleo is a bit lost in thought when Shira talks to her, so at first she doesn't respond. When it finally registers that she has been addressed, Cleo turns to face her old teacher and says, "Oh, wonderfully! I was actually on my way to Crescent Bluff when we were ambushed, to visit the temples and learn as much as I can from the priests of Sek-bas. That is who I am most focused on. She really speaks to me, you know?"

"Yes, Cleo. Fierce and prone to action is our God Sek-bas. Much like yourself," she jests with a quick smile. "My studies, as you may know, involve Am-ines and our knowledge of his abilities and disposition. A terrible and unloving god he is; his powers are difficult and yet enriching to study. Death magic, as the commoners say."

She thinks for a moment of the recent events and an inevitable war that will take place. "Perhaps we may travel together after this -errand- is completed. I've not been to Crescent Bluff since I was young and it may be safer than taking the inner roads back to the Library."

"Oh yes, that would be nice! We should definitely do that," Cleo exclaims in reply, excited at the thought of traveling with one of her old teachers. "I am sure there is plenty of information to be found on Am-ines in Crescent Bluff as well, and perhaps our research may help one another." The girl has a big smile on her face after the exchange, her mind racing with ideas of the future.

"Indeed, Cleo. Perhaps there is room for us both to learn from each other," she replies, happy to have a positive response from the moody girl. Turning to Geral and Eoli, who are seemingly arguing about the conditions of the desert and its effects on mortals, she speaks up. "I'd appreciate it if we ended the talk of how easy it is to die out in the deserts." I'm sure they'll find something else to argue about, unfortunately.

With the majority of the group in agreement, the rag tag party heads along the path above the canyon. The path rarely strays far from the edge, allowing for an impressive view down into the depths of the canyon, which is seen to be crawling with large scorpions.

After about an hour of walking a strange high pitched cackling is heard by the group. Continuing to walk it grows louder and seems to be coming from more and more directions. Then without warning, a pack of hyenas appears from over the dunes and rocks that litter the edge of the canyon. They quickly surround the party, clearly hungry for a kill.

As the hyenas surround the group, Shira'stasa says a quick prayer to her Gods, before turning to the freed slaves huddling together. Unarmed and probably terrified, she thinks. They've gone through hell I'd imagine. It'd be a pity if it ended here. "Stay back, freed-men. We can handle this." She gives the tied up bandit a firm tug to get his attention and tosses the rope to one of the nearby freed slaves. "Hold him. We don't want him running on us."

With her hands freed now, she snaps her book open to the exact page she intends. Am-ines... you terrible and inconsiderate God. Your powers are mine to wield! she thinks to herself, feeling the unholy arcane power coursing through her being. Her face a window into her extreme concentration, her purple eyes go dark for a brief moment before returning to their organic color.

Raising her tome, she calls out, focusing her attention on a set of bleached bones that lies near the hyenas, perhaps picked apart days ago. Green and black flames surround the bones, dancing with unholy pattern as they lift the remains upright. Filling in what was once former flesh with burning, green-black, and writhing energy, the bones and dark magic coalesce to form a flaming skeleton creature that pulses with searing heat. The flames threaten to scald any nearby life.

The hyena nearest yelps, too terrified of the horrifying creature to dodge the first wave of unholy flame, its flesh sizzling and its hair singed.

Unable to do things of the arcane and divine arts like Shira, Cameryn does things the old fashion way. He begins to walk towards the two hyenas towards the rear of the group, and he targets a particularly nasty-looking one, hoping to end its life shortly.

Shira's fire burns two of the hyenas however she fails to bring either of them down before the pack sets upon the group. One of the beasts slips around the front of the group and sinks its teeth deep into the leg of one of the newly freed slaves, the unarmed man letting out a scream in pain. The others bunch up and set their sights on the three people closest. The first to arrive bites at the captured bandit who tries and fails to kick the creature in retaliation. Meanwhile, Cameryn defends himself from two more of the Hyenas. One of the beasts successfully bites the Elf's ankle, however he is too quick to let the other do the same.

As the hyenas move to surround his companions, Eoli summons forth a will-o-wisp cloaked in wind once more in an attempt to break up their formation. In the same motion, he calls up Gan-holtra's power, sending one hyena reeling and badly scaring another two. Curses, these beasts are lucky.

Moving into the midst of the freed slaves, Eoli shouts to them, seeing that several are on the verge of panic. "Stay calm, you lot! We're doing our best to protect you, running around wildly will make this more difficult!"

Spirit Companion:
Occupies one square. Enemies can't move through it, but allies can. When you take a move action, you can also move the spirit a number of squares equal to your speed. Spirit Companions cannot be OA'd as they are conjurations, not creatures.

Cleo decides to show off for their new companions, and rushes towards the center of the main group of hyenas. The young woman unleashes all of her might into two scorching punches, but the hyena she hits manages to stay standing, just barely.

Geral eyes the Hyenas ahead of the party before looking at the ones to the groups sides. He brings the blade close to him for a few moments, whispering a few words as he slowly slides his hand across the blade, bringing it back before charging forward at the Hyena attacking the slave closest to him. His blade slices through the hyena, flashing with light as the blood hits his blade, and to the others, he's there one moment, then gone the next, only a spray of blood from the beast left to mark his passing.
In reality, his spell only cast the illusion that he had vanished. Altering the way the others perceive him, including the beasts with illusions, Geral had made it look as if he had simply struck the beast and vanished, instead striking the beast as he ran past, taking advantage of his trickery to move to the other Hyena on the other side of the slave group, striking that one as well before finishing his assault at the front of the slave group, standing with blade in hand before the hyena. Though even then that is an illusion, made to look as if he is a few feet further forward than he normally is. He still grips his blade tightly, preparing to strike again should any of his foes try something.

Cameryn, furious at the mangy beast that bit him, takes a massive swing at it with his shimmering greatsword. He successfully lands a harsh blow on the creature, and to avoid any immediate retaliation, he backs up. Just as he does so, the hyena attempts to lunge forward, but fails.

Drawn to the Tenant's arcane pulse as if following its true deific master, the burning undead creature moves with unholy speed into the fray. It plants its scorched feet in between several of the hyenas before lashing out at them and emitting a terrifying cry, scalding them into submission. A window of opportunity, Shira'stasa notes before drawing forward a screaming skull at a nearby hyena who had broke away from the pack, forcing it back into her minion's reach where it would burn with the rest of them.

She snaps her head back, catching a glance of the slaves in danger. "Don't let them fall!" she cries out to her allies as she summons forth more unholy power, channeled straight from Am-ines himself. Damn you, terrible god. You must know who I am by now, hm? she whispers to him in her thoughts.

One of the beasts finally falls to the party's attacks, while several others are caught in both Eoli's and Shira's flames. However the group has little time to enjoy their success, as all of the pack comes within attacking range. Eoli watches as the slaves begin to run about, some attempting to flee and some fighting back. I'm surrounded by idiots!

He quickly directs his dust devil to a more useful position and it flings bits of rock and debris at one of the more distracted looking hyenas. Most of the projectiles connect and the hyena is set back on its heels, whimpering in pain.

Shira hardly notices the two slaves ripped apart by the hyenas because of her intense and unholy channeling. This godly power... it is almost too strong! she thinks to herself, hardly managing to contain the flow of energy through herself as a conduit.

She cries out, her very soul threatening to depart from her body from the power. However, with gritted teeth, she manages to hold herself together and shape the deific force to her own devices.

The burning skeleton continues flailing at the surrounding hyenas, and once again the Tenant uses the power of Am-ines to bring forth terrifying and nightmarish psychic imagery to force two hyenas back into the fray. With pained shrieks, they retreat right into the reach of the skeleton who continues to slash at the four hyenas nearby, searing their flesh.

Cameryn maneuvers himself away from the second hyena, in order to avoid falling victim to the pack tactics that have already torn some of the helpless slaves to bits. After a brief moment, he turns his attention to the snarling, brutish beast that he had been focusing his powerful blows on. Although the Elf isn't aware of it, Et-namn, the Goddess of Freedom, is watching over him. Cameryn raises his mighty greatsword and, with the Goddess channeling her divinity and power into him and the weapon, he unleashes an impressive blow to the hyena, accompanied by a powerful shock wave.

"Ffyc sanctaidd!" He shouts. The attack cripples the beast greatly, although the other hyena appears unaffected by the blast.

Cleo's frustration at not being able to kill her first target turns to anger as the pack of beasts takes down some of their new traveling companions, and bite into her and her allies' flesh. The anger manifests in a wave of heat emanating from the girl's body, causing the hyenas to cower and her allies to feel invigorated.

In a burst of motion, Cleo leaps and spins and delivers a rain of punches and kicks at the 3 nearest beasts. Two fall instantly, but one is left only barely standing just as before. Not content to leave her work unfinished twice in a row, she circles behind it and delivers one last swift kick to the creature. It collapses at her feet, but the fire in her eyes continues to burn wildly.

Seeing that the Hyenas have managed to get their teeth into the slaves some more, Geral comes to help out, slashing out at the Hyena closest to him before vanishing and reappearing on the other side, flanking the hyenas. He brings his blade in close, preparring to strike should they try anything, motioning to the slaves to get away from here.

Eoli watches as several slaves are attacked by the surrounding hyenas. Looking around he also finally notices the two corpses of not-so-lucky slaves, only slightly chewed. "No!"

Flying into a frenzy, Eoli rushes into the middle of the group, desperately calling to the spirits of the land to help him protect the badly outmatched members of their group. A fine mist begins rising from the ground, formed of water drawn from deep beneath the sands. Several patches coalesce into decently sized spheres of water, which then seem to harden and shoot off towards the hyenas in the area. Two of the spheres never make it, their forms dissolving mid-flight in to the arid desert air. The other two stay together much better, hitting their targets and nearly braining one of the hyenas, though it seems to still be standing.

The remaining mist, ever so faintly glowing, begins forming up around Eoli's companions and the slaves soothing the injuries of those that are badly hurt.

Seeing the two hyenas near Geral, Eoli directs his dust devil toward the man. The spirit within the whirlwind darts out of its protective gale and seizes his body, directing it to make an attack more accurate and powerful than anything Geral could hope to generate by himself. Unfortunately, the attack is completely misjudged and the sword goes humming past the hyena's head, nearly wrenching itself from Geral's grasp with the speed of its travel.

Turning to look at Cameryn, now far away from the others and having to face two of the beasts at the same time, Eoli calls forth another glowing will-o-wisp, which quickly forms it's cloak of wind, to aid him. "Cameryn, Try to get them to move away from my wind! It will take care of the rest!"

Cameryn takes a final, life-ending swing at the hyena as Eoli's spirit appears beside the remaining beast. Heeding the orc's words, and using the spirit's formation as a distraction, Cameryn quickly slips away from the hyena, hoping it would follow and allow for the mysterious wind to fulfill its plan.

Ignoring the one remaining nearby hyena, slowly being engulfed by her old mentor's summoned ball of fire, Cleo rushes towards the two harassing the ex-slaves and the loudmouth mercenary know-it-all. She does a spinning kick with a seemingly super-heated leg that manages to hit both beasts, one falling immediately and the other left scorched and barely able to stand.

Geral, upon seeing that the hyenas he's fighting aren't going to last very long, takes a step back, keeping his blade close in case they decide to lash out one last time before bolting off to the right, zigzagging once before making a dash at the Hyena on the other side of the group, bringing his blade up and down in one quick slash as he reaches it.

Eoli looks on, dismayed with the result of his plan. Ah, screw it.
The winds move to a spot near the hyena, and the will-o-wisp inside leaps onto Cameryn, seizing control of his body. The possessed elf suddenly swings wildly at the beast in front of him, catching it just above the foreleg and severing a strip of flesh from the body.

As the glow fades from Cameryn's body, Eoli calls forth another wind-clad will-o-wisp, sandwiching the hyena between a sword and a scouring place.
"Once more, boy! Get your pointy ears over here!"

Cameryn notices that the hyena before him is the only one left of the infernal creatures. Knowing his allies would soon aid in ending this beast's life, and fully aware of his injuries, he knows getting far from the animal would be best for his sake. In order to distract the hyena, Cameryn takes a mighty swing with his sturdy greatsword and successfully lands an immensely powerful blow on the beast. With the creature momentarily dazed, Cameryn moves away slowly before sprinting towards his companions, hoping the savage hyena would find a new target.

With a single hyena remaining, Shira'stasa turns to face it, her feet padding over the soft and shifting sand, arcane and divine energies coursing through her being. She hardly notices the fallen slaves that she had failed to protect, not with Am-ines' pull on her mind. She slides to a stop, conjuring her signature flesh-eaten undead hand to appear on one side of the hyena.

"By His power," she cries, raising her tome and causing the souls of past buried dead to emerge from the sands to torment the hyena. With a terrified shriek, it falls to a resting position, apparently frightened to death.

With the last enemy in sight dead, she scans her surroundings for a moment, before her book slaps shut with a startling clap. She closes her eyes for a moment, overwhelmed by the loss of the energy fleeting from her body. When she opens them again, she feels lightheaded, a dull throbbing emanating from the back of her head. I feel... less, she notes. I must make note of this.

She scrawls a few notes into her tome before turning to the rest of the group, finally noticing the deceased slaves.

"You look pretty beat up there, elf," Cleo says as she dusts herself off from the battle. It all seemed to be going pretty smoothly until she noticed how much of a toll the hyenas took on Cameryn, and it amuses her to no end. So much for all the tough talk.

Looking around, though, she notices the corpses of the deceased slaves, who hadn't even been free an entire day before succumbing to the desert. The reality of how dangerous the wilderness is really sinks in for Cleo for the first time. Two days she had been with this group so far, and in that time had been attacked by bandits twice and by a group of wild beasts. She can only imagine what the following days will be like, and she starts to wonder if it would really be safe to try to continue her way to Crescent Bluff on her own.

The last hyena fallen and Shira returned to her normal state, her eyes itch and burn, holding back tears as she stands over the killed slaves. She turns to the remaining men who had survived, with a sorrowful look on her face. "This should not have happened... We should have armed you. I'm sorry," she says solemnly.

"We've no choice but to stop and rest, and to bury the dead," she commands, her voice less shaky and more decided.

"Yeah, well you try taking on two hyenas single-handedly," Cameryn barks at the petite girl whilst bandaging his harsh wounds. Hienas ffycin...

Feeling slightly better, but still aching from the bites he received, Cameryn decides to lie down in the sand for a short spell, not feeling up for burying the deceased slaves... or moving. He closes his eyes for a moment and recalls being bitten by a wild dog at a young age. He smiles as he sees his mother' tending to his injury, her golden, flowing locks draping her delicate face. Cameryn missed her greatly, not having seen her since the age of seven.

Feeling slightly better, Cameryn picks himself up and wanders over to the nearest rock, sitting down in front of it and enjoying the warm sun-heated stone on his back.

Cleo doesn't say anything in response, and just follows Shira'stasa's lead in burying the dead. She knows it is at best only a temporary solution, since the wind will only blow the sand away in a day or so. But if it helps boost everyone's spirits to give a proper burial, she can't really find the harm in it. At least it is something to do.

While the others tend to their wounds, Eoli remains still, stoically watching the former slaves and the scholars bury the dead. He learned long ago that survival often means pushing your feeling aside, but it could not change the gnawing pain of the deaths he could not prevent. If only I had told them to avoid conflict sooner...

Spirit Companion:

"We should leave this place and make camp, it'll be dark soon."
He says turning to head back up the road, not looking back at the graves of his fallen companions.

Cleo watches as the man walks away, seemingly unfazed by the deaths of his fellow oppressed. "A change in government, huh? Well they better not destroy any libraries."

She follows the man up the road, agreeing that they should set up camp. She is not fond of the idea of sleeping in the wilderness rather than in a bed, but supposes it is better to do so with company than alone at least. Ugh, I should have bought a tent. Now I am going to have sand all over me.
