"You would think that surviving this long in this situation would have given them better sense then to make so much noise," Marcus says, annoyed at the sight before him. "Perhaps once they realize they have caught the creatures' attention they will flee and lead them away from here. We should watch and see what happens."

Redros shakes his head as he watches the men bang on the door.
"A terrible idea Marcus. If they do attract any more attention they will bring the monsters to our front door. I don't think it can handle an assault right now, and even if they don't, we do not know if these men are armed or not. They could easily break down the door and murder anyone inside. I suggest we act now, while we have both the element of surprise and the time to."

"And do what? Attack the creatures that have so far killed nearly everyone, while unarmored and barely armed? I get the feeling that surprise will do us very little good here. Those creatures might not even realize anyone is inside, and even if those men try to get in by force they have to go through multiple tables to do it."

Redros looks at the man for a moment, confused, then realizes he forgot to clarify who to strike.
"I... Meant the men currently bashing their way into the tavern, not the monsters. Sorry for the lack of clarification. If we get in behind them, they will be pressed against the tavern door and we can control the situation from there, bringing them inside either to safety, or to throw out the back door. If they are hostile we have them against a wall and will have the advantage, making the fight faster before we enter the tavern. Either way, we cannot let them bang on that door much longer."

"I'll not stand idly and watch these two townspeople get ripped apart by these... abominations. I'm just going to get a closer look." Cassia says as she quietly slips away from the alley a few feet up, crouching behind a pushed over market-stall at the edge of the plaza. "I've no interest in dying for a cause," Bastia says smugly as she idly leans against the wall. Guthrik is silent, watching the scene unfold, his face unreadable.

Redros watches as Cassia moves to get a better look, and makes moves to follow her. He steps behind her, moving to pass her as he places a hand on her back, motioning to stay quiet.
"You shouldn't be risking your life needlessly. Go back to the others, I'll get a better look and we can decide then. Hopefully they don't open the door for them. Then we will have a dangerous fight on our hands."
He creeps past her, being mindful of the monsters around him as he attempts to get closer to the men at the door.

"Damnit, girl, don't let those things in!" the tavern-owner yells across the lobby to Elene. "Here, I'll help you, I guess." Isdren steps up and helps the young girl move a pair of tables, but many more still bar the doors closed. The drunk slips into the corner, sobbing, while the mother chastises him for his unmanly cowardice.

Outside the mare, Cassia nods to Redros' words, but stays in place. The man creeps around to her right, getting a better vantage point and staying behind the wicked creatures with a view of the door now.

The tables prove to be difficult for Elene and Isdren, as they struggle to get another pair away from the door. However, three more still remain. Outside the door, the figures bang wildly on the door as the strange creatures close in. To those watching from the plaza, they look to be cornered against the double-doors of the Gilded Mare.

Liviana glances over at the drunkard and innkeeper, practically sitting ducks in such a dire situation. She rolls her eyes at the incompetent men and, turning around, says, ""Well, some great men you are just sitting there while two children move these heavy tables. And now your princess is going to have to step in to help. Pathetic." With this, she stampers over to the table blockade and assists Isdren and Elene in moving the table.

The last table is slid away from the double doors, and they stand unblocked, able to be opened. The inn-dwellers can hear from outside vicious noises, presumably of the strange creatures as they descend upon the two survivors. "Open it!" Isdren shouts, and the tension in the room is palpable.

Those outside the Gilded Mare watch in horror as the two figures turn, their backs to the door. They are holding some sort of weapons, their bodies rigid with fear and anxiety as the creatures take the last few yards up to engage. One screams, and one furiously shouts out like a caged animal.

Not wasting a moment, Liviana forces the tavern doors open and, gripping onto their collars, drags the two inside. With the men safely within the bar, the princess slams the door shut and begins replacing the tables that had previously blockaded the doors, although she struggles working singlehandedly. The two figures practically fall into the tavern lobby and the doors are closed shut behind them. The strange creatures outside slam on it viciously, shaking it, but Elene, Liviana, and Isdren are quick to begin barricading its opening radius with the bar tables again.

The newcomers appear to be two, ragged men in their thirties or so, with dirty clothes and unkempt-looking hair. One of them, short and quite round with a bald head, rubs his palm on the pommel of his short sword in its waist-scabbard. "Yeh, right, then," he says, awkwardly, frowning at the starting faces of the tavern-lobby. His partner stands up and shakes himself off, picking up the long, sharp knife that he had been futilely holding just a moment prior. This one looks to be a few years younger and is taller and slimmer. "Who's in charge in 'ese parts, 'en?" he calls out to the survivors, who stare at the new arrivals with wide-eyes.

"Who's askin'?" the tavern-owner hoarsely growls back. The taller man cracks a grin. "Smock n' Weasel, o' course," before grabbing Isdren by the scruff of his collar and drawing his awful-looking blade up to the boy's neck. The mother and daughter begin screaming, and Matilda gasps, her hands pulled to her mouth in terror. "Yer gonna give us all yer food, alcohol, n' women," the man cries out. "In that order!" his chubby companion shouts in reply.

* * * * *

From outside the Gilded Mare, the others see somebody rip the doors open and pull the two figures inside, before slamming it closed. Redros is able to see that the figure is Liviana. The creatures slam on the doors, their ugly screams projecting across the plaza. "Damnit! This is bad," Cassia curses under her breath as Guthrik steps forward from the shadows. "Aye... Those things aren't gonna give those two up, I'll tell you that."

Liviana's eyes widen as she witnesses the sudden turn of events that has just occurred. Well, this got ugly quite quickly. In the panic, she begins to brainstorm an escape from this predicament. After a moment of the gears grinding, she formulates a plan. "Why, the food and alcohol would be in the basement. The door's over there," she says, pointing toward the door. "I'm sure the innkeeper would let you in." She struts over to the tavern owner and whispers to him, "Lock them in."

Well that was unexpected. "With those things at the door we should probably find another way inside. It would be much safer than trying to get past those things." He turns to look to the others, asking "so any of you with better eyesight see an easy way to get on the roof? Or remember any back doors?" He turns back to face the tavern, checking for himself anyway.

"Well 'en, Missus, bring it to us. 'Course I wouldn't want a lass as fine as yerself to hurt herself." He grins devilishly. "You there," he says, shouting at the drunken man cowering in the corner. "Go 'n get our loot from the basement," he commands.

With sobering speed, the drunk man lumbers toward the door, slamming it behind him and you hear a distinct metal clicking noise as it locks from the inside. "Well that's a shame," the tavern-owner says, his eyes narrowed at the thugs. "Right, then -- you, little girl," Smock says, looking to Elene. "Get 'at key from the man's neck -- that's for the basement, right, ol' boyo?" His fat partner frowns. "I'm gonna run that coward through meself, y'hear?" he says, irritated.

Marcus' good eye finds a thick run of ivy on the adjacent building to the Gilded Mare. It looks old and spread-out on the wall, but possibly like it could hold decent weight. Bastia sees him eyeing it and speaks up: "Saw that too. Should probably chop that loose in the long run -- less ways to get into the Mare, the better," she reasons. The orc nods his head at the sound logic.

Redros slowly moves back to Cassia as he watches the creatures.
"We can't have them sitting there... They will break the door down eventually. And we need to get this salve to the man inside before he dies. I would suggest luring them away but... That is not the best of options for either of us, and I would rather not leave you here alone, armed or not. We need another way in."

Thinking quickly, Elene struggles to remember if she has heard about these particular thugs around the city. Realizing that she may be able to lure the men up into the attic, she moves towards the innkeeper. "'kay, sheesh. Just don't go stabbin' anyone yet."

Thinking back, you remember a rumor from a couple weeks ago about some sorry sods that had gotten thrown in the jail for a botched burglary. They were the laughingstock of the underworld for a few days when news spread that an old woman had clubbed them over their heads with a heavy rolling pin and they fled, running straight into a pair of Watchmen.
"No! She... I'll not have these rotten bastards put in the same room with my Hildra..." he whispers back to the girl, clutching the key tightly. "Now, now, old man, give us the keys," Smock says, losing his smirk and becoming irritated like his red-faced partner. "Don't make Weasel come over there hisself and cut it off yer wrinkly neck." Isdren, a heavy blade to his throat, stays silent and calm, his kitchen blade hidden in his sleeve, waiting...

The All-Seeing Eye grasps the thick vine with his hands and decides it can hold his weight before beginning his ascent. The twenty-foot climb is a breeze, and he makes his way up to the eave of the northern portion of the Gilded Mare before pulling himself up and over it. He stands on the edge as Cassia follows behind him and manages to slip up and over the eave gracefully. She gives him a nod and slips across the roof to go and watch the intruding creatures are the double doors from above.

"Ah, I should probably go before you. Seeing as how you're dressed and all," Guthrik says to Athena. Bastia lets out a sharp laugh, muffling herself as she does. "What a gentleman this one is. Bet you'd like to see that," she says to him, tauntingly.

"You little bitch," Smock spits, his face flushing at the mention of the old woman clobbering him. "Mock me and I'll run ye through! Now give us the keys, or this boy's throat runs red tonight!" He slowly steps toward the tavern-owner, his blade brandished out in front of him. Isdren whimpers a bit, still clutching the blade closely in his sleeve. Liviana begins laughing as Elene tells of the reputation the two men possess. "Oh my god, that's pathetic! Two supposedly tough men beaten by an old woman. Ha! You'd best be careful. For all you know, we could have a vicious, adorable puppy here too." The princess chuckles lightly again, gracefully walking around the lobby before plopping down in a chair facing the hooligans.

"So how'd you think of the names Smock and Weasel anyhow? Childhood bullies? Characters in a book? Your mommies gives you those names?" She smiles impishly at the men, happily egging them on to potentially distract the buffoons enough for someone else to make a move.

"We earned em, ye dainty lil' broad," Smock snaps back to Liviana. "And ye don't know squat about the 'ole story, lass,"

Marcus steps into the room and the two brigands narrow their eyes at his arrival, but the heavy crack that forms from a massive blow to the tavern's double doors steals everyone's attention. "What the hell? They're gonna bust through..." the tavern-keeper grumbles to himself. "No!" Weasel cries, as he flinches at the sudden, loud noise, and Isdren slips from his hands, nicking his neck minorly in the process from the heavyset man's blade. He dives away from the pair as he breaks free.

Upstairs, Cassia, Guthrik, and Bastia make their way down the ladder and begin to step toward the corridor, intrigued by the urgency of Marcus and the loud noises they hear. "Come on, mister," Guthrik says to Redros as he grips his wooden stave.

Re: Death Incarnate: A Zombie Tale IC

"And what is this, then?" Marcus says as he spots the armed men, just before Isdren breaks free from their grasp. His standard serious expression alters slightly to one of anger, though the two are barely distinguishable. "Have these men harmed you?" he asks to Liviana and the others, seeing the look of fear on many of their faces.

He draws his dagger and takes a step forward into the room towards the two men, not entirely sure what the situation is but not wanting to be caught off guard either. "Look, I don't know who you two are but if you're here to start trouble then you've just found yourself in a bad position."

Elene eases away from the innkeeper slightly, hand going to the hilt of her dagger and pulling it free of the material securing it to her arm. She warily keeps her eye on the two bandits, watching as Marcus talks down at them. "They havn't hurt anyone yet, but another two seconds and poor Weasel here would've been wonderin' why he's chokin' on his own balls." she says, gesturing slightly to the dagger-wielding ruffian. "Honestly, they should probably jus' stop movin' and sit down before they get their heads cut off. And I don't mean the ones above yer shoulders." She shoots the last bit in the bandit's direction.

Redros nods to Guthrik and walks down the stairs, spotting the two men that had jumped through the door. He wonders for a moment if they are armed for the monsters outside... Or for other reasons he has yet to see.
"I see we have some problems at the door. Is that why everyone is armed, or did we miss something while we were gone?"

He watches for a second each side of the room, the one with the thugs, and the one with his recent companions. He watches for an indication of what exactly is going on before trying to rush to conclusions.

Athena follows Redros and Guthrik downstairs into the main room of the inn. Apparently late to the party, she draws her knife and steps forward to join Marcus. "Why is it I get the feeling these two aren't here to help?" She asks, glancing around the room to get a feel for what has been happening since the two men were let in.

"They had a knife to the boy's throat when I got here, so I've that feeling as well," Marcus whispers back to Athena, though without turning to face her. He keeps his gaze fixed on the newcomers, eyes narrowed and dagger ready. Give me a reason to soil my blade.

Elene sees Athena come down the stairs out of the corner of her eye. "Get th' door, we can handle these scum," she says, gesturing at the slowly buckling entrance.

Liviana smiles as Marcus descends from the stairs and scares the men out of their undergarments, but the smile fades as the creatures continue pounding on the door. Although the street urchin instructs Athena to barricade the door, the princess wastes no time in joining the effort, but alone, her strength doesn't accomplish much.

With everyone back in the tavern lobby now, the two ruffians have begin to reconsider their situation, caught between a failing door and many unhappy-looking faces, most notable Marcus'. "Right, then..." Weasel says, scowling at Isdren who has leapt away from him and is now sticking his tongue out at the man. His taller partner speaks. "The damned door ain't gonna hold these rat-bastards," he says, grittily. "Why don't we jus' put our petty differences aside, jus' long enough to chop 'em up. No use in runnin' us through jus' yet when we can help ye' fight 'em off," he reasons. "And what makes us think you won't just stab us down in the fray?" Bastia accuses, her face a scowl. "They would, most likely. Let 'em get torn apart," the tavern-owner concludes. "They already tried," Isdren agrees, nursing his neck where a small wound bleeds minorly. His mother and sister have crawled over to try and pull him to the back of the tavern, but he shrugs them off.

A splinter of left door snaps off and a grasping hand appears where it was. You can see huddled bodies clawing, slamming, and scratching at the thick, wooden doors from outside, and the little one screams. "These ones are rotten," Cassia says in a low voice to the few nearby. "I've seen them around these parts once or twice. Don't trust them." The orc speaks in a husted tone in reply: "Aye... I'd bet it was these two bastards that knocked my head in back in the alley. I wouldn't mind teaching them a lesson, but to willingly let them be killed before us is immoral."

"Sure, we can set aside our differences for now. If you take the front lines against those things, that is. It's your stupidity that attracted their attention in the first place, so you can be the ones to stand by the doors," Marcus says, continuing to look at the men menacingly.

"That, or we can lock you in the basement until we can think of a better idea."

Redros shakes his head at the men before him.
"How very foolish of you both. Unfortunately, there is no back entrance to the tavern, as we are in a corner. If you kill us in battle, you will simply be killed by the beasts outside as well. What you may have viewed as an 'easy score' has turned on you both. Now, rather than leaving satisfied with our supplies, you have to depend on us. The position of power lies squarely with us and our numbers."
He points at the tables and flicks his finger towards the door.
"You can start by bracing those doors. Move the tables. Unless you believe that you can fight off the horde at our gates alone."

The two invaders exchange looks, before the taller man speaks up. "Fine, then, bugger. We'll play your li'l game for now. But don't expect us to fight these things alone." He steps toward the doors hastily, with Weasel helping carry the bar tables and shove them up against them as a barricade.

"Looks like we have two options," Cassia says aloud to the survivors. "Either we let them bash their way through the doors, where they're bottlenecked, or we push them back into the plaza and try and fight them there, I suppose." She looks to Marcus and Redros for input. Guthrik raises his voice in reply: "Though if we just wait for them to bash their way in, securing this tavern will be quite difficult without those heavy doors." Cassia nods in agreement. "Could just open them up and let them in," Bastia offers. The young boy looks up, his eyes narrowed. "You're wrong about us being backed into a corner," Isdren says to Redros. "How about some of us slip back outside from the roof and... stab them in the back or something?"

The double doors in question continue to rattle as the creatures bash and slam against them, but the make-shift barricades seem to be holding for the brief moment.
